Haha, The Stranglers? Great band and an excellent song but "soft metal" is still a massive stretch. Especially considering that they were barely a punk band.

Funny how much heavier the "soft metal" of yesteryear was than the flower metal of today.

I like that Traveler better than BT, but I never got into BT. Seems more straightforward?

Listening to the new Visigoth so far its sound better then the last album. Jake Rogers improved, his voice was good but his delivery was kind of boring on the last album.

"Warrior Queen" and "Traitor's Gate" are instant classics, with "Salt City" and "Blades in the Night" hot on their heels.

...But I still like their debut album more, not gonna lie. :V

For whatever reason the new Visigoth really hasn't stood out to me. I'll keep listening, loved the debut.

Great find by a friend, Manacle from Canada. Crosses the line between heavy/speed and power. Very solid songwriting.

Not yet but I already know it's going to kill! These guys (Manacle too, actually!) I could tell right away would have me possessed. It's a killer blend of speed and muscle, just the way the best US acts used to do it.

You know, I've found myself totally unimpressed by a large fraction of the "retro heavy/power" bands that have popped up over the past couple of years, but holy shit these guys actually deliver. No half-assed retreaded-filler-riffs here. Vocals are nice and distinctive, too - they kind of remind me of the guy from Sacred Oath if he had better enunciation and better control over his upper range. Lots of attitude.

Yeah these guys are one of the cooler Canadian bands going right now. Awesome guys too. The bassist is an ex-member of Hrom, Gatekrashor and he also does Ezra Brooks.

What's the general opinion on Demons and Wizards here? I've been listening to the first album quite a bit recently, and while Jon Schaffer's riffs sometimes aren't all that interesting, Hansi's contributions are sometimes good enough to carry the whole thing. Blood on My Hands in particular has a really powerful, dramatic chorus, although it's undone a bit by the singsong-y part that follows it.

I'm quite fond of the first album, "Heaven Denies" is one of my favorite power/thrash rippers, Hansi kills it with his crazy high rasping. "Fiddler on the Green" is simply better than any Blind Guardian ballad..."The Whistler" and "My Last Sunrise" are other favorites. There's a few filler tracks, but when it's on it's really fucking on! Even Schaffer's riffing sounds better than usual. The second album is rather mediocre, but the self-titled will always have a place in my heart.

EDIT: Meant to say "Fiddler on the Green" is better than any Blind Guardian ballad, oops. Not better than any Blind Guardian album, they're my 2nd-favorite band, although to be fair it can go toe-to-toe with pretty much any of their songs.

Ohhh, yeah. I love Blind Guardian, but Fiddler on the Green is almost impossibly good.

I tried the first album and ended up making it maybe halfway before quitting. Just boring and lame to me. Jon Schaffer's fault more than anything, what a hack.

I had similar feelings for the second album. I only spent like $3.00 on it and still felt ripped off.

Never heard the first one.

Demons and Wizards to me is pretty much Fiddler on the Green. The album is sounds exactly like a mix of Iced Earth and BG of the time but it is less interesting and inspired than both. Fiddler on the Green on the other hand is a masterpiece of a song, Hansi makes the whole thing, both with the vocal lines and the story he chose to tell.

Still on a Manacle binge. Great to see others like them. They have the riffs, the vocals, the production but most of all they have the songs that flow...

Listening to those Manacle tracks a few times made me go revisit Tales of Medusa, who are way better than I had originally given them credit for. They both have that distinctive Canadian sound.

Finally playing the new Seasons of the Wolf album after all this time. I haven't been this excited about an album since at least last year when all the other bands I was waiting for also put out albums after years. But this one's especially been a long time coming. So far it's fucking massive sounding and the band has never sounded tighter or more aggressive.

edit: This is a fucking stellar album. They really expanded on the sound while still retaining their signature style. Shame it took this long - if they'd kept the momentum up they probably would've caught a real wave with that retro metal stuff in the early '10s.

edit 2: This is a seriously fun and also soulful, passionate work. This is the album to beat for me so far this year. "No More Room in Hell" is probably their best song or close to it.

Check out Swedens STORMBURNER.
I am producing their upcoming debut album and here's a glimpse of it. It's still being recorded, this is the "single mix" and can be improved with time.

Man I never hear mention of Masters of Disguise (The band, not the album from Savage grace, though they are connected) I loved their first album they made after being the backup band for a Savage Grace tour a few years back, but in a few short years they now have three albums and their latest is soooo fucking good. Heavy amounts of early Savage Grace (Obviously) and the Germanic speed metal ala Walls of Jericho. Just listen for yourself

https://mastersofdisguise.bandcamp.com/album/alpha-omega

BTw, probably one of the best vocalists around in this band, cannot get enough.

Yeah it confuses me that they are not more well known, even their bandcamp has only a few supporters on their albums. But besides the obvious skill, and songwriting abilities of the band the production values alone are leaps ahead from some of their contemporaries. Guess the band is the poster child of whats called 'hidden gem'

This sounds really fuckin' cool, actually--it's clean, crisp, sharp, pounding, and full of energy, which naturally means I should be checking it out as soon as possible.

You all need to check out Traveler, right now. Sci-fi power metal is kind of hard to do convincingly, but these guys nail it.

Weird, somehow I missed it. Oops.

Regardless, it really does rule. It reminds me a bit of Terminus, to be honest, in terms of atmosphere, guitar tone, and a bit in the riffs/vocals.

Another good find: Pounder. Great harmonies, riffs have a lot of momentum to them.

One for you Running Wild guys that will probably go unnoticed, Pirate Hymn have a new album out 'Crossbones'. Like an instrumental version of Rolf with a greater use of keys.

I listened to both of those Pirate Hymn albums and particularly liked the Crossbones one. The heavy use of keys reminds me a lot of the RuneScape soundtrack, if anyone played that back in the day. Similar melodies at least. This works great as an instrumental!

I don't mind an instrumental or two, but an entire album? From someone who's not Nobuo Uematsu, David Wise, or Yasunori Mitsuda? Nope!

The last Chasm album was all instrumental and one of the best of the year. Don't discount so easily.

Eh as much as I love Corchado's vocals, I just really dug how cool and fresh it was for them to totally let loose in instrumental form. It was very different.

Just checked them out and it is funny, I used to hate Power metal of this variety. You know, super clean, keys, the whole powdered donut veneer :-P but after falling in love with the Armory album Empyrean Realms it has opened up these doors and I am coming around to this style and this sounds really really good, will have to check out the whole album.

It's solid as hell, some of the best in this style that I've heard in a while. And yeah I can totally understand a lot of people not caring for the style, lol. I just appreciate its simplicity sometimes, no curveballs, just double bass and upbeat melodies and catchy choruses.

From the label that brought you Running Wild worship now comes Stormwitch worship:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-vOkG5LN6E

It's a bit stock, but the vocals are very good and the Schenker-esque leads capture the black romantic vibe. I'll be interested to see what the album's like.
