From my experience they're one of a kind, but you might like Blind Fury and Pariah - two bands which Satan's members participated in.

Yeah Satan's out there. You might like Blitzkrieg, Brian Ross's "main band" I guess you could say. "A Time of Changes" is a great debut, but if people want to argue against the production on that one ... I'll actually agree with it, bothers me too (seems really thin). It's still cool though. They aren't as technical as Satan, but you might like them.

Avenger is worth checking out, but again they're not as crazy as Satan either.

Avenger's crazy in their own way. ;)

How about starting a thread dedicated to the discussion of NWOBHM?

Nah you could probably keep NWOBHM discussion here, hell maybe someone could edit the threads title too.

As for NWOBHM if you like Tank/Motorhead/Venom go and get Warfare's "Metal Anarchy". NOW! It is as awesome at can get - loud, obnoxious, in-your-face heavy/speed metal with a punkish rage and attitude.

I certainly do like those bands, I'll give it a listen. Heh, they're from Newcastle and had Algy Ward and Wurzel on a record, now I have to give them a listen!

If you're looking for some NWOBHM (though nothing like Satan) check out Savage's Loose 'n Lethal. This is one of the more vicious-sounding albums from that era. Everything is rather distorted but it adds to the whole thing so perfectly. It's just total balls-out rocking with some pissed-off sounding guitars.

I'd put it in the early-Venom field of headbangablility (I wish that word were used more often :D).

That is a GREAT album. Truly one of the more fun NWOBHM records. The opening track "Let It Loose" is a fuckin' scorcher!

Cauldron Born - Clontarf, so fucking catchy. THIS is the kind of vocalist the world needs more of thesedays.

Argh, that album frustrates me (the Cauldron Born one, I mean) like few other things in metal. It could have been really good. I agree that vocalist is pretty cool, though I prefer that Danny guy from the first album .. still, he wouldn't fit the catchier and more straightforward music on "...and Rome SHall Fall", I guess. But the drums .. are so .. so .. so bad sounding, I can hardly believe it.. I remember asking Howie Bently about this when I talked to him regularly and he was kind of embarassed about the whole thing. I feel the album maybe needed some more work, in the lead guitars as well, but he really wanted to get it out and be done with it ..hmm, II will have to finish my review of that sucker someday.

Hell's gates open with a dream
Feel the fire lick your body clean
Hell waits the time is soon at hand
Hell's gates, Hell's gates
Will open where you stand

\m/ Total awesomeness - especially live. The new Omen singer is really awesome on these old tracks. Which is weird cause his other band Aska is nothing special really.

What probably appeals to me the most in this song is that it's composed and performed like it's about heaven's gates, not hell's! Not sure if it makes any sense, though.

Just got Tysondog's Painted Heroes compilation (their two albums + EP). Great stuff.

First album ("Beware of the Dog") reminds me of Blitzkrieg and maybe Raven but faster. Kinda predictable in the fast song-slow song-fast song song palcement, but I can live with that. And the opening track is seriously awesome.

Second album ("Crimes of Insanity") is more like a faster and rougher version of first album.

Nothing too special in them though, just good headbangable stuff.

Tell me my good friends, can anyone recommend me any bands similar to Kamelot's latest?

It makes sense, in a way. Definitely one of the best Omen songs ever. I wish I could see them live today if the new singer really is that good...I know how much Kimball is loved and that he'd be hard to replace.

Ashes to Ashes - Cardinal VII. It's not as catchy, but it's the same sort of open, gothy type stuff, very beautiful.

YAY MORE VIRGIN STEELE RE-RELEASES!!!

To be more specific, David DeFeis is busy with remastering "Life Among The Ruins" and both parts of "The Marriage..." and other things for upcoming re-release of said albums, which are going to feature some bonus tracks (I wonder what those will be).

EAGERLY AWAITING :hyper:

EDIT: on second thought, I'm generally biased against remastering, so hopefully the original sound won't be ruined.

MARCH ON METAL WARRIORRRRRRRR

I've been reading Conan stories and listening to Omen.

Is the first Cauldron Born album better than the Rome one? I have it and I've never liked it very much.

I'm having a power metal appreciation day here at work and just finished listening to the first Cauldron Born album for the first time. I found the opening vocal line really really obnoxious, but everything after that was excellent. Solid riffs, sprawling leads, soaring vocals, other adjectives that start with s...

Up next we have "Barbarians of the New Earth" by Grudge, hope its quality.

I'm listening right now.

CYMBAL ABUSE! Sounds like a MIDI drum machine, even though such a thing probably didn't exist when it was released.

p.s. behold the power of Steve Fucking Grimmett.

Oh yes, yes, better by leagues. You have to prepare yourself for extremely "over the top" vocals, though .. I think it's quite something myself, but when I first heard it I wasn't so into this type of metal and wasn't too enthused.

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about that either. I always thought the production on the Marriage albums was more or less perfect, though I'm not ruling out the possibility of improvement. In any case, I have the originals, so remaster or no I'll be interested to hear the bonus tracks, especially if they're never-before-heard songs or live versions.

I agree the first is better than the second, and it does take time to get into; it's very dense and inaccessible, reminding me a lot of Fates Warning in that regard. Strangely enough, apparently Howie Bentley is working on Witchfinder General-style stuff these days, which is pretty fucking far from Cauldron Born.

USPM doesn't get much better than these. :D

@Abominatrix: I didn't really notice bad drums on Cauldron Born's second, but now that you point it out I can see what you mean. The bass sounds fine (modernized though I guess, like failsafe pointed for his review on their debut), but yeah the rest sounds a little flat. It doesn't really bother me though, but I'm someone who loves Rigor Mortis' debut even if it has cardboard drums.

I still need to give their debut a few more spins. Not sure which vocalist I like more, but both are pretty fucking amazing in my opinion. I think I can somewhat agree with some thoughts above though, the second album tends to feel a little more straight forward and accessible than the debut. The second half especially (when all the songs seem to get faster), just straight up blue collar USPM there. I don't really have any complaints though.

Might be safe to say their debut is a little more on the white collar side of things?

Dude, this song fucking rocks. Grim Reaper has this weird timeless aura around some of their stuff, totally puts me in the 80's or something. Damn, I'm busting out that Best Of right now!

Rock You To Hell was a little friendlier than the previous albums I'd say, still fun stuff. But damn are their videos hilarious:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ5rllUvx2E

Now this is epic Grim Reaper (and an even cheesier video!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhTdKigJhZc

Look at that epic solo kill the demon!

Nahsil: Which Cauldron Born album don't you like? I would think you'd dig the second.

Grim Reaper!

I love that band. Particularly because of Grimmet's singing style. Totally catchy and grab-you-by-the-balls. Great great stuff. Without him this band would 666% less awesome.

As a sidenote - everybody check out Pantera's "Power Metal". Especially the title track - double bass-fueled speed metal assault. Nothing like their later works.

From the VS re-releases I'm going to get... shock horror... Life Among the Ruins. I like hard rock and even Whitesnake and to be honest, I don't care about the direction as long as the songs are still there.

Hey all. Me and my brother are on a Call of Duty 4 binge right now - what are some great songs that would fit perfectly with the game? You know, really epic, war type songs. Speed/Classic preferred, however some Power is cool too. Thanks.

I have no problem with Noble Savage and Age of Consent, but I can't remember if I had issues with that one ...

I still think Guardians of the Flame is one of their best.

Though, I still find it to be a little odd how heavy and fierce Original Sin's album was. Maybe DeFeis didn't have too much influence, I don't know ... but that album sure as hell is heavier than VS's releases between Noble Savage and Life Among the Ruins.

lol, I always play stuff when I'm playing CoD4 (got back into it lately). Um... Omen's first three albums maybe? I don't know, I'd say a lot of stuff goes well with the game, haha.

I will go into a slightly diffrent direction but I reccomend either "Endless War" by Realm or "Slay The Oppressor" also by Realm.

I haven't actually heard much of the Jack Starr era of VS, I'll check it out some time. What Grave Digger would people recommend to start with, I hear Tunes of War is a good 'un. The Scottish medieval theme sounds pretty good. In other news Helstar's Nosferatu is pretty damn cool, certainly a grower.

"Tunes Of War" would be Grave Digger's high point. Start with that - it contains some of their best tunes including "Rebellion" which is a total classic.

And that Helstar album is pure gold!

I'm looking for some power metal that is brutal, and if possible, has some nice keyboard melodies... like Dragonforce, but not as gay.
Thanks.

Sounds like you'd enjoy Crimson Shadows. They're pretty much Dragonforce with brutal (growl) vocals. Good stuff, but only an EP out so far...
