Recommend me some crusty death metal, please. I already know about Sanctum and Stormcrow, also Bolt Thrower's first couple of albums, and Sad Ex, of course.

How does Nile compare to the bands I listen to? I bought their latest CD from Best Buy but I'm a bit afraid of if I will like it or not.

Here's what I've been listening to over the last year or so:
Dark Tranquility - Fiction
In Flames(Almost all their stuff)
Children of Bodom - Blooddrunk
Hypocrisy - The Virus
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Dethklok
Rotting Christ - Theogonia
Lamb of God
Devildriver
Machinehead - The Blackening
Droid

The only band from your list Nile is comparable with is Bloodbath. And don't lump Rotting Christ together with those bands. It deserves much better.

haha it's not that I lumped Rotting Christ into the list, it's that those are the bands I listen to.

Go listen to Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness.

Hmm Repugnant is a bit trashier than I like...not bad, just not quite my thing, at least not yet.

It will be. Nile and Bloodbath do look a bit out of place on that list.

Well I've been trying to venture out and listen to different things. Bloodbath I listened to because of Hypocrisy, and Nile seems to be quite praised around here.

Hi. I'm looking for old death metal bands with war thematics in their lyrics. Voice of vocalist should be quite clear (ifcourse it still should be growl), so do not offer very brutal gore/death/grind mix. Like an example, I could mention Bolt thrower Warmaster album. Thanks.

Try Pentacle's "Under the Black Cross".

Cemetary's An Evil Shade of Grey owns ALL OF YOU.

I'm looking for a band with "answer-call" vocals in the vein of Deicide's "Legion" and Anata's "The Infernal Depths of Hatred" vocals and is also somewhat technical/brutal with lyrical themes about Anti-Christianity or Philosophy.

Only those that know their stuff can help me out here.

That album owns a lot of stuff really. But that Cemetery/Cemetary album really should get reissued. It is a fine piece of classic death metal.

Actually I love both on the same level so...but Severed Survival has "Charred Remains" and "Ridden With Disease" so I guess it takes the cake.

The differences among subsequent albums for those two are how it should be for most bands when they tweak their sound on the next release.

I should note that I'm a bit biased, I consider Severed Survival the greatest thing death metal has ever done, so there!

I found it hard to go back to Possessed after listening to Autopsy. I love older school but I don't have to be slave to it.

Possessed's stuff comes a close second to SS, Seven Churches is still godly.

How can you beat (unless it's SS) songs like The Excorcist, Pentagram, Holy Hell and DEAAAAAAATH! METAAAAAAAAAAL!

I always wanted to put in old Slayer after listening to Possessed. I just thought it was so much better. But I am not making any comparisons. I'm just opining.

There's nothing wrong with that, Show No Mercy gets regular rotation from me, and so does Hell Awaits (though not as much). I like their other stuff, but nothing is as good as the first two. Tom not falsettoing the chorus to The Antichrist on Decade of Aggression was like thrash blasphemy to me.

THRASHPHEMY!

This.

How can you not love "Ridden With Disease"? And I absolutely love Chris Reifert's lyrics (at least up to "Fiend For Blood"), they're kind of special for me and different from the rest. Hell, I can't help cracking up each time I read the aforementioned "Ridden With Disease", or "Severed Survival", or "In The Grip Of Winter".

Autopsy is great, and I like that album, but it gets a bit monotonous to me about half way through. Still fun though.

Reifert's vocals are also top-notch, that howl is positively evil. I'll take that over the "common grunt" any day!

EDIT:

Gah, the second half is better than the first! How many times do I need to repeat "CRITICAL FUCKING MADNESS?"

I was listening to Pestilence Testimony of the Ancients for the first time last night. What a fucking killer album!!! This is about as good as it gets for me, in terms of what death metal was meant to be.

"Consuming Impulse" is still better, IMO, as it doesn't have a shitload of stupid interludes.

EDIT: and it has MARTIN VAN DRUNEN on vocals!

Persefone fits that category. But in terms of similarity to Amoral, try Codeon. http://www.myspace.com/codeonband

I have a scenester friend who is completely convinced deathcore shit bands like Carnifex and Annotations of an Autopsy are the most brutal thing anyone can imagine, can someone recommend anything that will destroy his ears? I have almost no experience in the porno/gore type thing, but I think that's what I'm looking for.

Internal Suffering's Awakening the Rebel, Mindly Rotten's debut or Kataklysm's early albums. None of them are goregrind-related at all, but I find them to be some of the most absolute frenzied and chaotic DM I've heard.

Can anybody here recommend me some good classic death metal?

I also have a question. Is Brutal Death Metal considered a subgenre of Death Metal? Because I've seen them classified different sometimes. If so, how much more brutal would it be? LOL

Possessed, Death, Morbid Angel, Dismember, Obituary, Deicide, Autopsy, etc.

Brutal death metal is indeed a sub-genre of death metal. But it is noticeably different from old school death metal.

I have always considered Possessed Death/Thrash, or Extreme Thrash, which I absolutely love. But who cares, those bands from the late 80's walk a very fine line between Death and Thrash.

Looking for some death metal that sounds like decrepit birth - diminishing between worlds, dont recommend all the popular bands (kronos etc.) looking for more underground stuff..

Possessed is DEATH METAL, fuck those who say otherwise! :grr:

Except Beyond the Gates and Eyes of Horror of course.

It's a dull, lifeless album that lacks all of Behemoth's trademark intensity. The production is shit, the riffs are unmemorable and it comes off as Nergal sucking Nile's dick. It isn't actively bad, but I don't listen to it at all.

Such a disappointment after Demigod (and their older stuff of course).
