I posted befor but I think the Behemoth conversation over shadowed my request.

Is their anything out their that sounds similar to Athesit? I love the jazz inspired metal. Im not a fan of Cynic. I already listen to Necrophagist and Martyr but they also arnt as similar to Atheist as Id like.

Looking for bands similar to Morbid angel, altars of madness era.
Crazy guitar solo's, raspy growls, sing-along choruses and if possible catchy, satanic lyrics. :)

(No, i'm not looking for any Nocturnus stuff with their ''space'' metal sound.)

Thanks in advance!

Recently I've been checking out the Swedish DM scene. I know and love bands like Grave, Entombed, Dismember, and alot more well known bands but can anyone recommend me some other, more obscure bands?

I'm also a big fan of old-skool thrashy death metal if that helps, and the bands don't need to be from Sweden.

Thanks.

I can make a little list of Swedish DM bands (of various kinds):
Treblinka, Carnage, Vomitory, Spawn Of Possession, Torture Division, Vicious Art, Visceral Bleeding, Aeon, Unleashed (you probably know about), Desultory, Degrade, Degial, Insision, Eviscerated, Evocation, Torn Apart.

Thats what I can come up with at the moment :P

Antigama is fucking awesome. They have such an adventerous sound thats hard to replicate. If I could name a few albums that are in the same range I would probably reccomend Cephalic Carnage's Anomalies or The Red Chord's debut.

But still, its kinda hard finding a band like Antigama.

Then let me throw you some recommendations of really good produced death metal (some of these you may have heard of already):

Gorefest - La Muerte, Rise To Ruin (a bit of an old-school style to them, which works nicely)
Odious Mortem: Cryptic Implosion (tech-death madness)
Hour Of Penance - The Vile Conception (if you liked the new Origin, you'll like this, too)
Emeth - Telesis (don't let the supposed -core influences put you off...it's a killer album)

Plenty more where that came from, so if you want some more, let me know. These ones should get you started, though. :)

I will add them to my Wish List and check them out. Haven't heard of any of them before. I'm always welcoming more suggestions.

I don't think your liking of newer bands has much to do with you being an audiophile. What sounds good to you is not necessarily what sounds good to some of us and as you'll see fromm another thread here, some just don't think that the current standards of production for "bigger" bands surpass the old .. quite the reverse, in fact.

The possible benefit of working chronologically is that you see how something grew and evolved. It's useful if you really want to make listening to and learning about death metal a long-term project, but otherwise, I wouldn't necessarily say it's the best way to discover new bands, either.

Well my best example is Lamb of God as I listened to them extensively at one point. Burn the priest and New American Gospel just sound okay because I don't like its production. However, hearing songs from either album off of their live album Killadelphia makes them sound immensely better. I can get past that, but it takes a few listens. On the other hand, Ashes of the Wake was produced well as was Sacrement and I don't have to get passed the dull sound their older albums have. I realize that may have been intentional, I really don't know.

I'm not against listening to things chronologically as I do like seeing how a band evolves. I was able to do that with In Flames and it's interesting to see how they went from Melo Death to the Experimental Metal their latest album has become.

Soooo much metal, so little time.

So if I were to start chronologically, where should I start? I imagine that's a can of worms

I'm currently listening to Ithyphallic for the first time. It's pretty good, I like it more than Apostasy already. Would it be worth my time to start from Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka?

Hey guys. I'm looking for more stuff in the vein of older Cryptopsy (BMF, of course), Morpheus Descends, Immolation, and Baphomet. I've heard of this band Incarrion. Should I contemplate getting their full-length?

Organic and distinctive production (No sterility or inaudibility), tremolo-picked guitars, poetic lyrics, occassional doom breaks, audible bass and a good bass tone, good (doesn't haven't to be technical or simplistic, just engaging) drumming, and gutteral vocals - however - they must stray from the DM norm of vocals. Unintelligibility is fine, and encouraged, and the lyrics can be in whatever language. These bands above sort of deliver me to a cold place, and I am looking for more of that.

'Symbolic' is an amazing album. I just bought It myself. I think it may even be their best. I also have 'The Sound Of Perseverance' witch I think is another great album.

Thanks for the Swedish DM recs guys, I found some cool bands.

I really liked their debut album 'Scream Bloody Gore' even though it's pretty basic and straightforward.

Another favorite of mine is 'Human', which is more complex and features some awesome bassplaying.

Human, lovely progressive death metal, i'm sure you will like it.

As RevBau mentioned before, Symbolic is great too. Pretty much similar to Atheist. It sounds much more progressive then Human, but it's very good in it's own way. :)

I'm looking for death metal bands similar to Necrophobic's ''The nocturnal silence''. The album must, except for heavy and melodic, sound dark and kind of atmospheric.

Lyrics must be in english and i don't mind production.

Thanks in advance!

Basically everything by Death is good stuff, but I'd say you should get Symbolic and Human first.

All I thought of here was Sybreed, but I don't know if that's what you're after.

Definitely worth it.

Black Seeds of Vengeance is an album that takes a lot of time to get used to so if you dont like it at first, move on too In Their Darkened Shrines, try Black Seeds again, if you still dont like it go on to Annihilation, eventually you wll enjoy Black Seeds. I Guarantee it.

Yeah, every album is different. For a general summary, they started playing primitive OSDM then got progressively more technical and progressive with each album. I'd say have a read of the reviews on this site to get a feel for what each might sound like.

I've heard SBG and Human (commonly regarded as their best albums are they not?). They're both very good albums, though nothing too special.

Holy fuck, Nunslaughter's "Hex" is one of the greatest albums i've ever heard! Any other old school, early death metal bands that have similar riffing-techniques? I'm really into stuff like: Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Obituary, Massacre, etc. Higher-pitched vox only - i'm not looking for Cannibal Corpse-type guttural stuff. Thanks guys.

I've only started getting into Death Metal, the only bands I really know (and like) are Death, Deicide, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse (Only like the first album though). Can anyone suggest any bands that are similar to those? thanks.

Yeah, that's pretty much the best start to death metal you could have!

Check out Possessed's Seven Churches. It's the first DEATH METAL (fuck you all!) album and an absolute killer at that. The riffs are awesome, it's nice and fast and Jeff's vocals are insane. Also give Autopsy a crack, they're a bit like Death's Scream Bloody Gore but ten times heavier, they have an awesome doomish edge to them and they fucking rule hard. Severed Survival is the best death metal album of all time.

Thanks for the list, I'll be sure to check them out. I looked up a bit of Obituary and Autopsy, looks interesting.

I'm not entirely sold on Cannibal Corpse though. I thought their first album (or what I've heard of it at least) was enjoyable, but I think from there they went a bit far on the vocals. They lost a bit of the Thrashiness too from the first album, but I dunno, I'll have to look into them some more.

And I've heard a bit of Possessed Bezerko, but only "The Exorcist" and "Death Metal". I'll have to go and buy the Seven Churches Album. Where should I go from there?

George Fisher is a much more competent vocalist in regards to CC, you might like their stuff with him more. Give Live Cannibalism a crack, good mix of material up to that point in the band's history, and without Barnes on vocals (a definite plus!). Not that thrashy, but its pretty good. Kill is also one of the better recent albums in the genre, especially considering the fall of Deicide and the like.

I don't think there's anything quite like Nocturnal Silence, however I would recommend listening to God Macabre - The Winterlong, from my own experience I find it very hard to find similar albums to gems from the early Swedish death scene.

'Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka' and 'Annihilation of the Wicked' are the only Nile albums worth bothering with.

As for Behemoth 'Satanica' to 'Demigod' are all decent in one way or another; 'The Apostasy' as previously mentioned, was unabashed Nile dick-sucking.

Also go listen to Bolt Thrower; I'm not even going to justify why because you just should.

So, I've been getting my Ass kicked by the first two Incantation albums, any other bands that incorporate that same sort of slow, heavy as all hell sound into their sound.

For a somewhat less obvious band I'd check out Cianide. Excellent mid to slow paced death metal that just fucking crushes everything in sight. For something a little more blatant, make sure you have the mandatory Severed Survival and Mental Funeral by Autopsy.

edit: Look for Sorrow's "Hatred and Disgust" also. Read Abom's review on it if you want to gain some perspective. If reading that it sounds like "..a doomified Reign in Blood" doesn't make you want to check it out, nothing will.
