EW isn't scary at all. They have a pretty drugged out atmosphere with NOTHING evil, scary, or vile within. It's just drugs, occult, and other things.

Besides, I wouldn't call EW straight-forward doom.

Really enjoying Graveyard Dirt. Heavy heavy traditional doom bordering on more extreme types.

If you think that some Electric Wizard songs are scary, then please tell me which ones, so I can check them out.

Well Craggzy, you did say they were terrifying. I think that holds even more weight than scary. So they're not scary anymore eh?

Go back.

The best example I could come up with is The return of the beautiful by My dying bride; the break while you hear people yelling/screaming to create an scary atmosphere.

I beg to differ, Dopethrone seems to be a departure from the rest of their discography precisely because of the role negativity plays in that album. The heart of the music seems to stem from disgust, bitterness, anger and hatred. I have only realized this lately, and it's really making me re evaluate my opinion of the album (I had considered it very overrated and the weakest EW I've heard, by far).

I just want to use this opportunity to plug Black Pyramid. I only discovered them a few days ago. They're a Doom Metal band from Massachusetts. They play a really nifty type of thrashy, psychedelic doom. And the vocalist has a very gravelly voice, one that works damn well with the music. Here is their myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/blackpyramidkills

They have only released one three song demo. I highly recommend downloading it (the band uploaded it themselves): http://www.blackcoffeesound.com/demo

No Life King is my favorite song from it, for the time being. It reminds me of Son of a King by Holy Martyr, only stripped down and doomier. The last two minutes of Mirror Messiah are great as well; fan-fuckin-tastic soloing.

Check out Khanate, maybe? They are not everybody's cup of tea and they get slated in reviews here but I think they are wonderful. Took me a while to get into when I first heard them, although I hadn't really found drone at that point. They're not pure drone but they would probably appeal to fans of that style a little more. Too Close Enough to Touch from the Things Viral album is one of the scariest songs I have heard, and it's a scary album overall. Extremely potent atmosphere, the shrieked vocals really pack an emotional impact. Listening to that song in the dark outdoors can be pretty creepy.

I need something to get me into drone. I've always tried to get into it, but I've never found a good place to start. Can someone recommend something, please?

Thanks :)

Black One by Sunn O))) worked for me, but Ramptom by Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine may also be good becuase its alittle more traditional, just very very long.

Boris' Feedbacker would be the ultimate start up for drone. The first half of the album has that droning dooming guitars with a slow psychedelic solo by Wata and Takeshi melancholy delivery on the vocals, then they start to play sludgy doom after that. They tightly end it with a nice droning outro to end the music. Id hate to talk about it more, but its really my favorite of all Boris release.

Depends on what you mean by "scary". Bands like Wormphlegm, Senthil, Black Bile, Woods of Belial, Khanate etc... could be considered 'scary' by some.
There's also Dolorian if you want 'nightmarish' stuff.

You won't find the lyrics for most of those bands though.

This may sound stupid as I am not very informed in Doom Metal, but I'll ask anyways.

What is the most brutal and aggressive Doom Metal band ever? I find most Doom Metal I listen to too slow.

Damn, I feel like an idiot. Guess Doom isn't for me.

Absolutego and perhaps Boris' collaborate with Sunn are the drone work that appeal to me the most. Absolutego especially is just great.

In the early days of Doom / Death there was some great stuff coming out by bands that threw Hellhammer and Black Sabbath into a blender. Triumph of Death was Hellhammer's contribution to the genre, you've probably heard that song already. Goatlord was an oldschool death / doom band with Hellhammeresque tendencies. I know there are others.

diSEMBOWELMENT, Thorr's Hammer, Sempiternal Deathreign, Ceremonium, Ataraxie, Indesinence etc... they're all heavy, brutal and/or agressive.
All of them are slow (with some fast parts here and there), but that's Doom anyway...

This is a good post, Xtremo, you should try out some of these. Doom metal is generally a pretty slow genre but it is possible to play faster, as shown by these bands as well as some of the classic bands like Candlemass who have faster songs as well.

So, recently I've been listening to some bands with Philip Swanson on vocals, and i feel obliged to recommend Hour Of 13, Seamount and Vestal Claret here. All three have a strong Sabbath vibe to them, with Philip's vocals resembling Ozzy's at times. Hour Of 13 is more ancient (in the 'proto-doom' sense), Seamount is more traditional, and Vestal CLaret is palin ol'd heavy fucking metal with a bit of doom thrown in here and there for good measure. I urge everybody who's into Sabbath (or Count Raven) to check out the aforementioned bands.

Looking for bands that play in a style similar to Evoken. Not necessarily carbon copies, though. I was looking on my own for a while, but can't find anything. I hope they're not THAT unique, hehe.

Is there such a thing as doom punk? Black Sabbath meets Black Flag? No sludge please, I can't stand Eyehategod and bands of that ilk. Man is the Bastard kind of fits the bill when they aren't being noisy.

Try Esoteric(UK) or maybe Pantheist.

EDIT: Actually Pantheist don't really sound like Evoken, but if you like gloomy doom, check them out anyway.

diSEMBOWELMENT are the first thing to check (if you don't already know them), they're one of the main Evoken influences.
Ataraxie are influenced by Evoken, don't miss them. The first album in particular.

I'm looking for doom/death or doom/black bands with vocals similar to Jonas renske (Dance of december era, ONLY). I love his despaired growls. The only bad i've heard with an similar vocalist was Beatrik. I don't mind production and lyrics must be in english.

Thanks in advance!

Can anybody please recommend some good sludge bands similar to Eyehategod. Lots of Sabbath worship with some hardcore sounding sections. Cleaner vocals would be nice but not necessary.

I already have Acid Bath and Weedeater.

Vitus and Flag were contemporary, the influence was probably mutual. Vitus isn't what I'm looking for, but they're doom masters none-the-less.
