Hey guys, it's me again.
I would like someone to recommend me some epic doom, or blackened doom, please. I love fusion genres, and these sound pretty cool.

Black doom metal bands: Forgotten Tomb, Raventale and Dolorian. As for epic doom metal, Candlemass I guess.

SA doesn't quite do it for me, I never really connected with them. I can't get the feeling I would associate with say Pentagram, Vitus, Trouble and Candlemass. Their stuff is pleasant but emotionally lacking, I find it a bit too clean really.

Try some Barathrum, Abysmal, and the first two Samael albums for good black/doom.

Some more then: Isole, Solstice (UK), Doomsword, Scald (Rus).

Just getting into Doom now, mostly funeral doom though.

So far I love Warning's "Watching From a Distance", Thergothon's "Stream from the Heavens" and Skepticism's "Stormcrowfleet"

What else should I start with?

I'd say some traditional and some stoner next. I'd assume you already have Black Sabbath's Master of Reality?

my favorite doom album:
Crush the Insects, by Reverend Bizarre

some stoner doom I highly recommend:
Electric Wizard's "Come My Fanatics...", "Dopethrone", and "We Live"
Sleep's "Sleep's Holy Mountain"

stoner/sludge/doom:
Bongzilla's "Amerijuanican"

I don't own much trad. doom, so I'll leave it up to someone else to recommend that.

Can anyone recommend me some doom or dark metal that is similar to the slow part in Bethlehem's "Apocalyptic Dance"? I really love that long and that particular part just hits me.

One other question.. do you know of any doom metal with harsh or groweld vocals that uses a flute found in alot of folk/viking metal?

Can anybody recommened some EXTREMELY laid-back Stoner Doom, sort of like in Electric Wizard's "Wooden Pipe" and "Mountains of Mars"? Same bassy production, same speed. I just want something reeeeeaaaallyyyyy laid-back. I don't care if there are vocals or not.

Acid King - The Early Days or III, and Om - Pilgramage or Conference of Birds maybe.

When it comes to Doom, Reverend Bizarre is all that I know well. But honestly, Reverend Bizarre are such a brilliant band! No fan of this kind of music could ever go without having heard (and loved) reverend Bizarre.

I second Om for the laid back stoner doom. A more obvious one would be Dopesmoker from Sleep.

Uaral SOUNDS OF PAIN might work too, although it's been a while since I have heard it.

Thanks, good recommendations. I just breifly listened to clips from each one and they sound just like what I was looking for. I will listen to them more in depth probably tonight.

Hello, recently bolstered my doom library with some more stoner/sludge doom, now I see another area that is lacking- traditional/epic/original. The problem is, I've listened to song previews from bands like Pentagram, St Vitus, Witchfinder General, and Cirith Ungol, but I just can't stand the vocals. I don't know what it is about these bands, maybe I've become too familiar with just Albert of Reverend Bizarre and early Ozzy, so I don't want to change, maybe not. Anyway, is there any of this doom I described, but with EXTREMELY good vocals? thanks

EDIT: It'd also be great if the band was fairly well known, as I'm most likely going to a (fairly large) record store near me tomorrow, and would like to get some new doom then.

Periodically revisit Cirith Ungol. I tried them a few times to many "what the fucks" before I checked back and absolutely loved it.

King of the Dead is supposedly the best but they are all pretty much awesome.

Will do, hopefully it won't be so bad after a while, as I do like every element but the vocals.

For now though, just found Doomsword, and from the track previews, this sounds what I'm looking for. I'll pick up "Let Battle Commence" tomorrow.

Something's definitely wrong with you. :nono: Were those previews from different albums? Try as many albums as possible, they SHOULD grow on you.

I'm looking for bands like Mournful Congregation and Loss (US), but not the usual ones, know you like, Worship, Thergothon, Skepticism, Grief, Ahab etc.

Btw, Mournful Congregation have a new release coming up: The June Frost CD/ double LP in 2009, nearly gave myself a heartattack when I read it.

I've always been curious to listen to Nadja but they've got so many albums out that I never really tried out. But now I've got the chance to see them live next month so it's time to finally get into them. Which album(s) should I try first?

I don't like to brag, but I consider myself to be a bit of a Nadja 'expert'. ;)

There are a number of records I recommend to you:

Bliss Torn From Emptiness - The rerecorded version.
The Bungled & The Botched
Corrasion
Desire in Uneasiness

Each record is different in it's own way.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. So, I'll start off "Desire in Uneasiness", it has the shortest track-lengths.

Nice, very nice. As weird as I expected, but somehow I seem to get into the atmosphere. So I'll keep on listening and try the other albums too.
I bet they are really good live, and that's a very good reason to visit Porto once again.
Thanks man!

Quote:
Skepticism - Alloy

Image

Easily some of the best work from Skepticism, this album maintains the intense mood of their first but adds to it the fascination with emergent complexity in simple pieces that marked later works, but here a more facile sense of songwriting centered on constructing a tunnel of symbols into which the listener relaxes disbelief and then finds the path turning as it evolves, eschewing the progressive linear for the dynamic dimensionality of an eternal churning of creation and destruction like a cycle of breathing.

Skepticism - Alloy (2008) : Review | MP3

I've been enjoying this one quite a bit. No pandering, just deep atmospheric doom with some soul.

Definitely check out their collaboration with Fear Falls Burning, "We Have Departed the Circle Blissfully." It's two songs, each roughly 20 minutes long. The first is disposable, but the 2nd is some of the best drone I've ever heard.

Sleep "Dopesmoker"

Well, they're definitely overrated, but not all together bad. The debut might have been the best Doom album ever had it's length been trimmed by about 30 minutes.

Or their demo ... "Laments" was it? THere is some flute-like instrument on that, and I like the distant sound it has somewhat better than the following album. Guitar sounds quite clean and mixed with those funeral growls it just sounds excellent somehow.

How about Kranium, another South American band. They use panpipes, and mix folk with both traditional doom and hints of death metal. Someone on here recommended their album "Testimonios" to me and I must say it's a masterpiece.

Overrated? I have to disagree. I know of no other doom band with such great, heavy riffs, amazing bass playing, fantastic drumming, and vocals as good as Albert.

One of my favorite elements of Reverend Bizarre is the bass. Here, Albert shows that the bass doesn't always have to follow the guitar to be seen as "doing something". He always does these amazing fills, and sometimes the songs are even driven by a main bass riff.

Doom as a whole is a haven for bass. I am actually thinking about picking up bass soon since I've been so into doom lately.

Yes, they have all that, but they have trouble knowing when to stop. A lot of their songs drag on for far to long.

I suppose I can agree a bit with you, ThrashingMad, I guess I like it enough that it doesn't bother me.

ReigningChaos wrote:

Maybe so, but it's not always used like RB uses it. For example, in most Electric Wizard songs, the bass seems to back up the rhythm part, getting it to sound heavier. Albert of RB plays a much more prominant part, even for doom metal.

Trim RB's debut by 30 minutes? HELL NO!
We need MOAR!

Now a little bit more serious, there are enough normal (not funeral or anything) doom metal songs under 10 min. And RB does use the extra time, bassolo's, changing tempo's here and there and the like.

Are there any other Doom Metal bands that play pretty much only actually long songs?

BTW still looking for this, it got kinda buried:

"I'm looking for bands like Mournful Congregation and Loss (US), but not the usual ones, know you like, Worship, Thergothon, Skepticism, Grief, Ahab etc."

Reverend Bizarre don't do it for me at ALL, for some reason. I don't even know what my problem with them is, to be honest. But all of their recorded music that I have heard (bar a couple of tracks) is very uninteresting to me despite that doom is my big passion, and they were rather tedious live also.
