I know, weird request, but I was wondering if their are any death metal bands with a stand-up bass. Can be a natural sound, or can be electrified, but it must be stand-up.

Tech. and/or Prog. death is preferred, but anything goes.

EDIT: STAND UP BASS!!! Also known as Contrabass or Double Bass. You know, like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_bass

Okay, I changed it to "Death Metal with Up-Right Bass", I guess that the preferred term for it, I've always known it as Stand-Up.

Does Apocalyptica count? From what I gather stand up basses are (some sort of) cellos.

EDIT: Never mind, now I know what they are. Apocalyptica is the closest thing I can think of.

Yeah, there probably is none. Are the requests going to get more and more impossible to answer?

Listen to jazz if you want that shit.

Yes, it really is, not the most ridiculous but it is up there. The desire to want to listen to death metal with upright bass is slightly more ridiculous but this isn't a thread for questioning those desires.

Cadaver's fantastic 2nd album "...In Pains" is EXACTLY what you are after; semi-technical Death Metal with the bassist playing double bass on some tracks. One of my favourite DM albums ever.

Youtube links:

"Inner Persecution"

"Bypassed"

Hope that helps.

This really isn't a ridiculous request at all. Maybe if you only listen to Pantera it is but Metal is possibly the most experimental genre in modern music and far weirder things have been done. I'll look around for some bands that use stand up bass. I actually recorded some stuff a few months ago with a friend and he pulled out his upright bass and it actually sounded awesome. I'll see if he can send me the files.

People, the OP is talking about an upright bass, or double bass.

Apocalyptica is probably as good as it will get, but there is a huge difference in the sound quality between a cello and the bass in question. The cello can hit higher notes and can be played with more clarity, while a bass resonates much more and the difference in the notes is not as obvious. It also cannot not be played nearly as fast as the cello.

Does Lucifer's Principle count? To be honest, I'm kinda surprised not many people heard of them.
My favorite song by them.

Autopsy was the main band that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread.

The OP hasn't been here since 2011. I can guarantee they're beyond caring.
