Can someone rec. me some heavier/more technical prog? Im looking for bands in the vein of BtBaM, The Contortionist, Cynic, etc I like a mix of growling and soft vocals, sometimes with even more of a variety. As far as prog goes, Im rather picky about vocals. Often times I find that vocals can be a distraction from the music, because they are too cheesy(Spiral Architect) or the vocals are good but get boring combined with not being backed with interesting enough compositions or instrumentals(Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Angra). I suppose I should probably browse this topic more, but I also take a liking to progressive death metal that has a mix of clean vocals and brutal and soft instrumental sections.

Btw, what do you guys think of BtBaM's Parallax I and II? Ive listened to Parallax II back to back 4 times now, and have been blown away by it. Its an epic masterpiece, and its not what I would expect coming from them, I would say its my favorite prog concept album of the recent years.

Been on a bit of a prog fiend lately and would love to find bands within the following subgenres of it;

Speed/Thrash; mostly in the likes of Toxik or Testament, with more speed over thrash, and being obviously more melodic than standard thrash..

Death/Brutal/Technical Death; stuff like Obscura and Order Of Ennead with a mix of the brutality of say bands Deicide, Suffocation or Bloodbath..

Melodic Death/Doom; very familiar with the favourites (Insomnium, In Mourning, Omnium Gatherum) etc and just got familiar with the fantastic Woccon, but I am craving more.. sorrowful harmonies and melodies with growling vocals, cleans are acceptable if they are available..

Post-Rock/Shoegaze; not too familiar with a lot, although I do like Alcest and would be open to anything similar, obviously big focus on atmosphere, mixture of up and downbeat stuff is welcome!

All in all I know it's the nature of the genre but I am looking for stuff in all of those subgenres to have some form of melody to their songs.. I don't mind if some stuff is just the straight out fast/agressive stuff, however I do like a mix of that plus melody in prog.. thank you guys!

For some tech/prog death stuff, give a try to:

Pitbulls in the Nursery
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gosa55YS1-U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP_7hwL_gGw

Pavor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms3rkheJbBE

Hannes Grossmann

For melodic death/doom

Barren Earth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9I_O7mS1sI
http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Bar ... 3540294014

And for post-rock ish stuff, Cloudkicker has released some more downtempo music than his regular djenty style, pretty atmospheric and beautiful, no vocals though.

Know of any prog metal completely free of power metal influences? I can dig Royal Hunt or Queensryche, but overall the cheesier stuff isn't for me.

I guess maybe something like 90's King Crimson, but a little heavier.

Agreed. I usually don't like straight Prog Metal but that Haken record does it right. Pareidolia is one of the best progressive songs I've ever heard.

Can someone help me with this subgenre?

I've been listening to metal music for years, most time 'pure' metal, like Traditional Metal/Doom/Power/Thrash/NWOBHM/Death, but recently I'm trying to learn more about all those fusion subgenres like Industrial, Grindcore, Gothic, Folk, etc.

So I gave progressive metal a try, and someone recommended me Fates Warning, Rapscallion (obscure band), amorphis "Skyforge" and Devin Townsend's "Ocean Machine: Biomech", and those bands sound very similar to Alternative Metal! (aside from Fates Warning).

Am I really listening to progressive metal with those bands/albums that I said above? Because 'Ocean Machine' is quite similar to Faith no More (aside from the weird experimentation), and Fates Warning is totally different from Opeth, and Rapscallion could easily be compared to Soundgarden, Helmet or Quorthon's solo material.

Oh, and when I mean 'Alternative Metal', I mean bands using both Alternative Rock structures and metal riffs.... not Shit like Coal Chamber or Ill Ñino!

Any help appreciated!

(my first post. yeah!).

You were definitely misled by Rapscallion (what I remember of that one is a low-budget Faith No More) and Devin Townsend. Which Fates Warning albums did you hear, and what did you think of them? They're my favorite band and definitely one of the leading names in progressive metal, but even some of their stuff is arguably in an alternative realm (like Disconnected).

So I recently downloaded discographies from both Genesis and Kansas. They both have a lot of albums and I'm wondering, are there any albums I can skip over or ignore?

Can't tell you about Kansas, but with Genesis it's simple: everything from "Trespass" (1970) through "Wind & Wuthering" (1976) is absolutely essential symphonic prog. Everything else is "bonus". Personally I find something to like on every album of theirs, but assuming you want pure prog rock, stick to those albums I mentioned.

The debut, "From Genesis To Revelation", is a very nice late-60s style psychedelic pop album, but it sounds nothing like what came after. The follow-up to "Wind & Wuthering", "...And Then There Were Three", still retains a lot of the progginess, but the change is apparent already on that album and even moreso on the follow-up, "Duke", which is sorta half prog, half pop. By the time of "Abacab", their transformation was complete. However, every album they've ever done after the debut has at least one or two prog-ish tracks on it.

Oh and btw, if you find you really like 70s Genesis, I absolutely recommend listening to Steve Hackett's first solo album, "Voyage of the Acolyte", as well. Pretty much a "lost" Genesis album (albeit mostly instrumental), and I personally like it as much as anything by the band.

The standard answer to this is Renaissance.
You might also want to check out Mike Oldfield who has been collaborating with female vocalists throughout his career.

Thanks splyu, Renaissance is amazing. From Oldfield I've only heard the more famous works, which album are you referring to specifically?

As a massive fan of early Oldfield, I would like to interject: Oldfield's early "classic" 70s era mainly utilises female vocals as backing textures, though "Incantations" (1977) does have two lead vocal sections featuring Maddy Prior. It's not until the 80s that he really uses a female singer (Maggie Reilly) in any kind of rock context though, from 1982's "Five Miles Out" album onwards. The lengthy track "Taurus 2" has a fantastic mid-section called "The Deep Deep Sound" which is one of my favourite 80s Oldfield moments. The "Crises" and "Discovery" albums are two more albums to investigate. After this point (1984) my interest in him drops dramatically.

Edit:
"Sheba" on QE2 (1980) is actually Oldfield's first use of Maggie Reilly as lead vocalist. The vocals are not proper words, however.

@Metantoine While I was searching for a more folk oriented proggresive band, I have to admit Magenta really caught my attention, I'm a sucker for female oriented rock done right, thanks.

@balbulus Ok, I´ll be sure to check those, thanks.

Hey there dude. I listened to "Awakening The Guardian", from 1986.

Yep, Rapscallion sounds like Faith no More with metal riffs and that "funky" beat.

But what about devin townsend?

Mention that next time, the better the details, the better the recs! Have you heard Blood Ceremony's latest album, it's their proggiest so far and it's quite folky.

Also Hands of Orlac, Italian occult folky doom akin to BC. Both could be too heavy for what you're looking for though...

I'm looking for more of the prog rock type of stuff. I tried listening to Rush but that band didn't really hit me :/. I got into Pink Floyd recently, never really liked it in the past but I now I think they were awesome. Especially The Dark Side Of The Moon and and before. King Crimson's early albums are really good too. I've tried to find more of that stuff but haven't really found anything that are on par or better than those two.

TLDR; psychedelic(ish) prog in the vein of Pink Floyd and King Crimson.

Dude, Pink Floyd's Animals you got to hear if you haven't already, It's probably their best, recommended with earphones.
I don't know what you mean by psychedelic because you are mentioning albums I wouldn't categorize as such. Still, check out Ozric Tentacles, amazing psychedelic band.
And as for progressive rock, Genesis is my favorite band of the genre, if you want to checkout an album, listen Selling England by The Pound, a little more folk oriented than PK or KC.

Pink Floyd's earlier albums and King Crimson's debut album were definitely psychedelic, the latter albums not so much. I actually tried to listen to Animals but it has always sounded kinda meh to me, might check it out again though.

@Korpsegrinder: You should give early Yes a try as well as some Frank Zappa...especially his earlier works if you like the psychedelic stuff. If it's more of a prog thing try Zappa's mid 70s stuff. What Rush did you listen to? Maybe it didn't grab you because it wasn't the right era for you. Also give Marillion a try.
Zappa

Yes

Marillion

This Shadrane album is really spellbinding me these last few days. Really hard to categorize. Melodic, textured guitarwork and keys and vocals that soar and dive and weave into great vocal lines. Consistently surprising and entertaining music that has a lot more to it than you see at first. I'm really liking this a lot.

Hmm, dunno how I've missed Yes, sounds awesome. Which era of Rush should I check out? I've listened to couple of the latest albums only so far. It's always a bit painful to get into those older bands since they have like gazillion albums :P. But yeah, I've usually found that I've liked the late 60's - early 70's stuff more than the 80's and above, like in Pink Floyd's and King Crimson's case.

I guess the most progressive era of Rush would be 2112 through Hemispheres.

What he said basically, though I would definitely recommend checking out "Ommadawn" first and foremost. Yeah, it's not conventional "vocals" but more of an amazing choir of banshees really.
