The album has some newly written songs and a few pieces from earlier demos and EPs, so it's not the most cohesive thing out there (The Darkest Grace is oldest BTW). But songwriting is great, apart from the vocalist struggling with his range at times. The vocals and guitar leads go a long way of reminding of Iron Maiden, but their influences also include Helloween, Queensryche and Fates Warning.

They're coming out with a new album in early fall, and I'm expecting a new single soon if all goes to plan. The new songs they've played live are more into the early 90's prog direction rather than Maiden-ish stuff which they're straying away from a little, and the vocal lines are written better than on the debut.

Well, it's obviously the band stays in their comfort zone with their debut: the songs tend to sound quite similiar to eachother (definitely not an issue for me) and well, I'd like to hear what the band will be like if they wouldn't rely on these Iron Maiden-ish melodies. The vocalist sounds pretty good though: he sounds young, but fine most of the time, wailing with quite some strength. Maybe there's one track (don't know from the top of my head) where his lines are a little odd, but that's the only exception.

I'll be looking forward hearing new material by these guys. :)

When you do repeated listens you'll notice the songs aren't really that similar to each other. I counted four songs that have a more prominent Maiden influence, but for example "Through the Veil of Death" has pretty much none of it (excluding how the vocals naturally sound). It's a good reference to what to expect from their upcoming material, sound wise.

Well the title of the thread has progressive rock in the title as well as metal, so I may as well ask here.

I'm looking for prog rock that uses a lot of organ and has a real atmosphere of being creepy / scary, like the first albums each of Jacula and Antonius Rex.

Examples:

Antonius Rex - Neque Semper Arcum
Jacula - In Cauda Semper

The vocals don't have to be like in those songs, and faster tempos are welcome too.

ALchemy:

You'll be hard pressed to find anything quite as deliberately scary as Antonius Rex, I think, but you could still check out some other Italian acts like Il Balletto di Bronzo. Their album Ys is pretty much a masterpiece and the last track is particularly dark, I think. Their first album is a lot more normal hard rock without much if any organ, but then they suddenly went mad for Ys and morphsed into a completely different sounding band with unbelievable chops.

Also try Metamorfosi's Inferno album Inferno. Basically one long piece of music divided up into several tracks, it has some really dark organ work and seriously bombastic vocals.

Also try perhaps Il Rovescio Della Medaglia.

Beggars' Opera are from Scotland. maybe too uplifting for what you're after but they have some of the coolest organ work I've ever heard in my life in their first couple of albums, and plenty of hardrockin' guitar, too. Think Deep purple I guess.

I'm going to guess you already know Goblin/Cherry 5?

I've been trying to get into more explicitly progressive stuff. So examples of proggy stuff I've liked so far are Images and Words + Awake, Tales from the Thousand Lakes, Opeth's Damnation, Cynic's Focus, and Death's latter output. I'm open to pretty much anything that isn't on the tech death side of things. Jazz influence, good bass, and more emotive approaches are all huge plusses.

Try Exivious, Gordian Knot and Aghora. They're all related to Cynic curiously, but none of them is actually death metal.

- Barren Earth are pretty much an expansion on the mid-90s Amorphis.
- Turbid North combine old school death metal with southern sludge and groove influences on "Orogeny", and deserve more attention.

Hi guys, so i've been really into this kind of proggy post-rock, with not too complex song structures, a special focus on the vocals, big chords, atmospheric passages with kind of odd melodies, I'm not really sure wich style this is but i'm enjoying it quite a lot.

Some references:

Recently got to listen Headspace and Distorted Harmony, and i´m quite impressed by both. I didn´t find any review on both bands, do any of you have any further comments about these albums?

I'm always looking for new bands/older bands I've never heard of to blow my mind on the progressive/technical metal end, like seriously talented musicians, if anyone can throw some names at me like Meshuggah, Origin, Gorguts, Defeated Sanity kinda stuff...? (I know I should ask in the Death Metal thread and I will but I think theres good crossover here too!) thank you :D

Going more off of the death metal end, Obscura (the German band), Atheist, and Cynic. Exivious, as well, if you like jazzy stuff.

Phavian is a progressive metal band, but has a female vocalist. Soooooo..... Opeth's older material like "My Arms, Your Hearse" features drastic tempo changes and harsh to clean vocals...I like that album the most. They're progressive rock now. I'd also agree to check out the 90's era of Death as well. "Individual Thought Patterns", "Symbolic" and "The Sound of Perseverance" are all good investments.

Just my thoughts........

Hmm for the melodic death/thrash with progressive edge you could try with Codeon. (Can't provide youtube links atm, but they have only one album, and it is fantastic)

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Codeon/32639

For technical/progressive death metal you can go with Pitbulls in the Nursery.

http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Pit ... sery/30522

Progressive thrash, Vektor.

Is there any progressive death metal (as in not deathcore) that's as rhythmically technical as Meshuggah?

Is there anything out there that's similiar to Outworld? I definitely don't love that band but they had some cool tunes written. I can appreciate that sort of musical style at times.

For melodic death/thrash check out Revocation though you may already be familiar with them. They get compared to Sylosis frequently.

For technical thrash check out these: Ulysses Siren, Target, Realm, Artillery (particularly on By Inheritance), Aspid, Arcane, Vendetta (on Brain Damage), and Bezerker. And check out these threads.

This is a thread for those looking for that specific Progressive Metal band they've been looking for and for those willing to help.

I'll start I'm looking for some Progressive metal band that have harsh vocal and uses High-Tempo, also If the sound is very intricate then kudos for you.

Try the album Negative B by Sanctifica. It has harsh and clean vocals.

Help, I've been looking for a while for a band in the vein of early Rush; long songs that are generally prog rock but have a metal edge, especially in regards to technical guitar solos and drumming. No wind instruments ideally.

I can think of ELP here but since they don't have a guitarrist you wont find much of guitar solos (Even though Greg Lake actually sometimes played a couple of them).

Also, you can check Return To Forever "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" to "Romantic Warrior" albums, they're fusion, probably don't have a metal edge but the guitar/keyboard solos are way too awesome and the drumming is amazing.

Oh yeah, I have one of their demos but as far as I remember they were kind of progressive death metal.

That was in their demo days, they later went more into pure jazzy prog territory. You could call it Cynic worship, but they're slowly detaching themselves from that tag, plus with their new album and all. That's why I highlighted Continuo Renacer on my reply. You should try their albums. ;)

Any albums similar to Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace? Or Maybe just similar to the band. Just no Fates Warning please, I'm familiar with their power metal albums.

Thanks in advance.

Catharsis, Imperium, and Seer's Tear come close to varying degrees.

EDIT: The Last Things are worth a shot too, albeit maybe a little closer to the Into the Everflow sound, and with some less metallic Marillion-esque prog influences.

Also, there are no songs on YouTube, but The Answer's only demo gets pretty close to the sound too, especially Psychotic Waltz's thrashier songs.

Hey, I've been digging for progressive bands (metal or rock) recently that shove out albums like nobody's business. The style I'm looking for is maybe the proggiest bits of recent Iron Maiden or maybe something like Porcupine Tree from In Absentia on. I'm a glutton for punishment, so self-indulgent shredding, double-albums and overlong songs are all welcome.

And I'm not looking for prog/power, I'm thinking of more NWOBHM style.
