It has been decided, the grindcore help thread shall now come unto its own.

Make sure you follow the recommendation central guidelines, it would probably be a good idea to read them before posting here if you haven't already.

Begin!

EDIT: In response to all the "I'm new to grind, what albums should I start with" requests, theposega has provided a pretty useful list with some additions from other thread regulars for those who want to explore grind but aren't sure where to start. These should get you started:

theposega wrote:
Assuck's entire discography, Nasum's "Inhale/Exhale", Pig Destroyer's "Prowler in the Yard", Brutal Truth's first two albums, Carcass' "Reek of Putrefaction", Terrorizer-"World Downfall", Extreme Noise Terror-"Holocaust In Your Head", Repulsion's "Horrified", Discordance Axis discography, S.O.B.'s "Don't Be Swindle", Napalm Death -"Mentally Murdered EP" and General Surgery's "Necrology" EP

Um, wasn't there already a metalcore/deathcore/grindcore thread? At least that's what it says on the help threads -link thread.

To make this even slightly related, I can't say I'm a big fan of grindcore. Perhaps I've never really found it interesting. I do like some Nasum, Napalm Death, (early) Cock And Ball Torture, Rotten Sound, and also goregrind like early Carcass etc., but meh... Feel free to recommend me anything kickass worthy, though.

Insect Warfare, Phobia, Maruta, Kill the Client, Extreme Noise Terror, Repulsion, Assuck, Brutal Truth and Rompeprop are definitely worth a listen.

Exhumed is damn cool, THE MATTER OF SPLATTER! I'm not much into grind, but there's a few bands I really dig. Mostly the stuff with a big death metal influence a la Carcass. Necrotism is, I think, my favorite grind album. The main riff in Carneous Cacoffiny is a perfect representation of the elements of grind that I love. Can anyone recommend to me some bands whom sound like the aforementioned?

Check out The County Medical Examiners and General Surgery, both of them are heavily influenced by Carcass

County Medical Examiners basically play Carcass songs backwards though. General Surgery are much more original in that regard.

Should have mentioned that, I'm familiar with The County Medical Examiners and they're absolutely great. I will look into General Surgery. Thanks.

Listening to some Insect Warfare right now, and well, I have to say that this sounds pretty damn good in fact. I'll take a look of the others later on. Thanks.

On a related note, at the beginning of Carcass's song Carneous Cacoffiny, there's a little sample, from a movie I presume, that goes: "Human remains in a beaker and tray and coffee pot. Bones which were being
partly macerated, dissolved, in a margarine container which had engine
coolant in it. It smelled very awful."

Anyone know where this is from? A movie?

Oh, forgot to mention Impaled, the Carcass influence isn't as strong, but they're a great band, definitely worth checking out

Those are some of my favourite grindcore bands!
Also, I'll add Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation to that list as well as 324, Toxic Narcotic, Betercore, Assembly of God, Trap Them (they're more on the hardcore punk side though), Rotten Sound, Narcosis, Kill The Client, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Mumakil, Narcosis, Gridlink. That should keep you busy for a while.

Thank you sir, it was about time we had an independent grindcore help thread, eh? Hopefully it will prosper like the black metal help thread and the death metal help thread.

Try Lock Up and Disfear, two grind bands that I have given a lot of play lately. They both feature Tomas Lindberg (of AtG fame) on vocals, but also share members with prominent grindcore acts such as Napalm Death and Terrorizer. If you like later ND and Nasum, you should like this stuff.

Disfear is D-Beat, I wouldn't classify it as grindcore.

I'm going to throw Atavistic into the arena. Semi-legendary Whitstable (UK) outfit who released 2 EPs of chaotic Grind/Crust before releasing a more Motorhead-influenced LP on Peaceville ("Vanishing Point" -- fucking great album). Their stuff is out there to download (ripped from vinyl though), so get searching!

Ok, look, I appreciate that you guys are trying to help, but posts like these do absolutely nothing for the thread. In fact, a long string of them tend to get threads locked. Don't just shout out random recommendations without explaining what you are recommending (specific band genre, elements of their music), and why you are recommending it (why you like it, why you think others will enjoy it), if that seems like too much work, it would be better if you didn't give recommendations at all. I'm not asking for page long recommendations here, a sentence or two will do in most cases. They shouldn't be just a few words though, take maybe a few seconds to describe the music and why you are recommending it. Again, these kind of posts tend to devalue otherwise helpful recommendation threads and get them locked by the moderators, so in the interest of keeping this thread alive please refrain from posting them.

Nasum had a somewhat modernized approach to grindcore with an older sound. The band blended modern deathgrind with older grindcore, resulting in the blunt atmosphere of old Napalm Death and Repulsion and some song dynamics of newer deathgrind/death metal.

Pig Destroyer are a deathgrind band with brutal and chaotic songs. The band lacks a bassist and draws on both deathgrind and sludge, taking an aggressive approach with only a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist (and more recently, a pan-flutist). One of the most unique bands I have heard in recent years, and one of the best.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed are, in their own words, "gonzo violence". Alternatively, an experimental grindcore band with many releases and various approaches, fairly characterized by the terms "cybergrind", "acid grind", and "rapecore". The band relies on a drum machine and guitarist Scott Hull, as well as many as three vocalists recently. Their style varies from release to release, with their second full length due out in a few weeks, but a wide range of mini-albums, EPs, and splits, ranging from deathgrind to powerviolence. Not every release is going to be a masterpiece in one person's mind, but they have made some great music while trying new things.

They sound nothing like the aforementioned, but you may like Trap Them. They play crust/grind with a heavy swedish DM influence.

I'm intrigued.

Now, I have a request:

Misery Index. Their album Traitors. Aggressive-as-fuck deathgrind with this HUGE(!!) punk rock vibe/influence. The album is FAR too short, and leaves you wanting another good 10 or 15 minutes, and yet it would totally ruin it if it went on for any more. I NEED another album like this - I'm not familiar with their other albums, and one of the guys is ex-Dying Fetus, which I still need to check out more thoroughly. Shoot me some names, PLEASE!!

Regurgitate is definitly worth checking out.
They play Goregrind with plenty of "classic" Grind influance; so not strictly groove based. Varies with the specific albums.

I personally really like their "Hatefilled Vengeance" EP, its a great blend of Gore and "normal" Grind. Super distorted guitars, pitch shifted vocs, classic Grind riffing. Check it out.

I personally think Gridlink takes the cake as far as last years batch of excellent grindcore goes (Kill The Client, Agenda Of Swine). The riffing on Amber Gray is just outright overwhelming and the screams from frontman, Jon Chang, are truly intense. Plus the length is just perfect for an album like this.

Can anyone reccomend me some grind in the vein of SOB's Don't Be Swindle and Benumb's Withering Strands of Hope? I guess the vocal style of the two albums is what I'm looking at. Angry and chaotic but still somewhat decipherable, unlike Lee Dorrian etc.

LOL. Too true my friend.

@ Nyaricus
Pig Destroyer are a great band. I have a review of Terrifyer on this site and it sums up my overall feeling towards Pig Destroyer. It's not a bad review for a newbie, if I say so myself. :P Never knew they had a pan-flutist though.

About Misery Index's Traitors, that release is fantastic and I think it's length is perfect, given my short attention span. I'm not familiar with any of their earlier material, although 206 is and in fact could be held responsible for having my ears defiled by them. I haven't seen him around often, so you might have to PM him. What I do remembr is though, that their earlier material was more heavy on the punk side of things. In fact, I would say Traitors is pretty much a death metal album.

@ BurningASinner
Ghoul is total Carcass worship, down to the very bone. I've only heard We Came for the Dead, but I think you'll absolutely love it if you're into Carcass.

And by the way everybody, I am the biggest Insect Warfare fanboy 'round these parts so if anybody needs anything talk to me! [/Shamless whoring] But seriously, they're just a fucking great band. Anyone who doesn't have their tracks off the This Comp Kills Fascists, Vol. 1 compilation, stop whatever you're doing and go get it now. Absolutely face-ripping stuff. And though World Extermination is usually the release most people refer to, they have a good deal of gems in their earlier material as well. The version of Endless Execution Thru Violent Restitution with some other demo material has a good deal of gems, one of them being an incredibly intense and heavy cover of Celtic Frost's "Into The Crypts of Rays". Awesome stuff. I've recently developed a taste for the incredibly short songs they had on splits with FID and AnB. Extremely short stuff, but encapsulates Insect Warfare's intensity extremely well.

@ Rippingheadache
I don't think I could stand the album if it were any longer! xD It's some intense shit that's for sure, but I wouldn't want to put it on repeat for too long. I think Amber Gray is an album best listened to in careful doses, lest it loses its intensity or induces migraines. xD. I mean damn, have you ever heard such a piercing shriek? Hell, even Belketre isn't as intense as this. Or maybe it is. But either way, Amber Gray...Whew! Strong stuff!

I never heard of Benumb but if you're fan of bands like Extreme Noise Terror, S.O.B, Doom and even maybe Siege, check out Disrupt. Unrest has most of their songs on it. Barely metal Crustgrind with vicious dual vocals.

I NEED another album like this - I'm not familiar with their other albums, and one of the guys is ex-Dying Fetus, which I still need to check out more thoroughly. Shoot me some names, PLEASE!!

Try Agenda of Swine's Waves of Human Suffering.

I never heard of Benumb but if you're fan of bands like Extreme Noise Terror, S.O.B, Doom and even maybe Siege, check out Disrupt. Unrest has most of their songs on it. Barely metal Crustgrind with vicious dual vocals.

I'll check out Disrupt, thanks. And you, sir, should listen to Benumb's Withering Strands of Hope ;) First listened to them 1-2 months ago and they've quickly become my favorite grind band, along with S.O.B.

Waves of Human Suffering feels like a straight-up grind album with a good dallop of thrash in it, unlike the deathgrind style of Traitors, although it is a nice album.

Yeah, but it's the closest thing to Traitors I could think of. Traitors also has a healthy amount of thrash in it in some places, but Nyacarius might not like Waves of Human Suffering if he wants some of that tremolo death metal riffage.

Traitors is pretty overrated, imo. I can't seem to enjoy it the same way as everyone else but it's a good album. Not great, just good.
