Pretty soon you'll be telling me to say no to blast beats! Seriously though, I'm usually not for pitch shifted vox unless they are unusually devastating, or there is another prominent vocal style in the music (see: Revenge).

You gotta kill it in the music department for me to really dig on pitch shifted vocals but Dahmer definitely falls firmly into the catagory of "killin' it."

I actually like Dahmer. Just making the funnies. I seriously dislike pitch shifting, but as dontlive said, I can ignore it if the band rips (Revenge, Frightmare).

i just hate bathtub shitter and the like.

Yeah. That is the rule of thumb. pitch shifted vocals do suck. Definitely feel like it ruins a band. Regurgitate is a good example. Their stuff without pitch shifted vocals is really sick. My friend showed me their split with Cripple Bastards and it's really good. I'm honestly not a hundo percent sure it is devoid of ps vocals but I'm pretty sure.

Speaking of Cripple Bastards does anyone listen to them? I enjoy them to an extent. Their split with Eyehategod is awesome and Lies in Check is a pretty good album. It does have some really goofy stuff on it though but still a good album with cray vocals.

One of those bands I'd say I like at the drop of a dime but then I listen to some of their stuff and can't find what I like about it. That said, I do like their split with Corrupted and Misantropo a Senso Unico as it's more punk unlike Variante Alla Morte which is WAY too over produced for a band like Cripple Bastards.

I'll always kick myself for not buying this shitty white t of theirs at MDF that said "punx is vomit, vomit is punx" and had a guy throwing up all over the place in a shitty hand-drawn design

I'm curious if there's any non-metallic grindcore out there that's worthwhile and/or memorable. I was listening to Parlamentarisk Sodomi earlier today and it was just boring me to tears. Is all non-metallic grind like that in terms of sound and riffs? Is there anything out there that could be recommended for someone less accustomed with the genre?

I used to be anti pitchshifter, but after listening to so much goregrind over the last couple of years I've changed to pro (in the proper context at least), for me it really helps to the ridiculousness of the music - obscenely distorted, lo-fi, sloppy, disgusting blastbeating chaos with an inhuman monstrosity on vocals.. really just comes all together.

@androdion, of course there is. It just depends how much into punk you are (and for what it's worth, I don't consider Parlamentarisk non-metallic). I would suggest maybe looking into the powerviolence side of things? I don't know your production tolerance levels, but you can't go wrong with Crossed Out, Despise You, and Spazz. For some newer bands, Iron Lung, Weekend Nachos, The Endless Blockade, or The Afternoon Gentlemen. There's plenty more on either side, I just posted the first couple of really good ones that came to mind. Surely something among these might tickle your fancy.

Besides the drums being inaudible during blast parts, this is a sick album.

Hmm, Parlamentarisk Sodomi. Boring? That's the strangest thing i've heard in awhile. As for non-metallic grindcore, yeah, give Power Violence a chance as the other poster said. And yeah, most grindcore that sounds more punk is probably going to fly under "fastcore" or "power violence"

Magrudergrind walk a good line between PV and grind, especially their older stuff (which is better I think)

Like FM said a lot of non-metallic grind is gonna fall into fastcore or pv. My top recommendation for memorable non-metallic grind would be early Hummingbird of Death. The record I linked below has some metal influence creeping in but their Goatmeal 5", Diagnosis: Delicious EP, and split with I Accuse! are all top notch and super catchy and have minimal metal influence.

Hummingbird of Death

Backslider (metal influence is arguable)

Thank you all for the immense recommendations, I now have a shitton of open tabs to go through. :p Magrudergrind is the only one of the bunch that I know about. What do you guys make of Excruciating Terror? I've read that it has some PV influences but would you say it's more like metallic grind?

I said that I thought Parlamentarisk Sodomi was boring and non-metallic because the songs seemed to have a very marginal metal influence, and while I was listening the songs were just there. There wasn't any "conducting wire" but just violent music. I can't explain it exactly but when I'm listening to a grind album and it doesn't make me feel energized then it's just there and I can't appreciate it. That's probably the best way I can put it.

I'd say Excruciating Terror lost most of the metal influence by the time they put out "Divided We Fall". Ace band, one of my all-time favorites.

Good rec on Excruciating Terror. That band is so awesome.

Check out Fear of God. Early grindcore that is pretty noisy and lo-fi with some of the best vocals. My favorite non-metal grind band.

I remember listening to Fear of God some time ago, that stuff is nasty! :-P Not keen on lo-fi though.

So I skimmed through all of the recs given and I ended up with a handful that seem promising. Crossed Out's S/T is cool but the rest of the demo material has a pretty rough sound sadly. Some recordings remind me of Siege to a point. That fastcore stuff dontlivefastjustdie recommended isn't my cup of tea.

I'm now reduced to Despise You, Iron Lung, Spazz and Weekend Nachos for a closer inspection. That alongside my revisiting of Magrudergrind and Excruciating Terror should keep me busy for a while. Thanks again.

Can't believe I forgot Extortion. I think they're exactly what you're looking for.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6OA52bQGCQ

So. Despise You is one of the best bands EVER (don't fight me here). If you want something a bit cleaner, check out their recent split with AnB but Westside Horizion is pretty much the go to.

Recent stuff

Older

Crossed Out's a bit too sloppy/same-y for my liking, although they have their choice jams.

Check out No Comment if you're looking into PV

Despise You and Weekend Nachos are my favorite out of those too. I second the ANb/Despise You split. Shit rips mad hard.

This should be renamed grindcore/powerviolence thread.

Thanks for the recommendations. I enjoyed most of this stuff. The Archagathus was cool---though I couldn't tell what album to go for---and I actually went on ebay and bought Dahmerized after hearing 5 tracks of that. Shit, that's evil.

More recommendations are welcome...

And although I am open to super short micro songs and short tunes (I like Tumour & XXX Maniak and A Chapter of Accidents and LDOH), I'd prefer a bit longer if possible. Also, I really like pitchshifting and the way it obscures and warps the voice---not an issue for me, but a plus. Feel free to specify albums or post links if so inclined.

For anybody interested, here are a few grind reviews I did for wormgear---

For androdion:
The Endless Blockade, Scapegoat, Crutch, Greedymouth.

For c_zar:

If you liked Archagathus you'll probably like Lt. Dan, Faction Disaster, Pizza Hi-Five (they1re a bit different tho), Misanthropic Noise, and for pitch shifted goregrind stuff check Hyperemesis and Intentional Vehicular Manslaughter. And Super Fun Happy Slide seconded, it'll rip your face off.

Of all of these, Dahmer & Looking for an Answer were my favorites and the ones I ordered. I just got and really enjoyed Rancid Flesh, but was disappointed when I heard the Tumour album in full--- I appreciate the sound, but whenever the songs get over 45 seconds, they sound like peppy pop punk and dispel what was going on. And in 35 minutes it's only about 15 or original music, which is silly. Maggut/Autophagia split was okay, though the Autophagia vocals are pretty intense and bizarre.

I also enjoyed Lt. Dan & Pizza Hi FIve & Super Happy Fun Slide---but couldn't find any albums, nor could I tell which albums were the standouts. Any idea where to order these and which ones are the best ones to start with?

And I'm open to more recommendations. Some top favorites albums--- The Kill's Make Em Suffer / Roskopp (Australia) / Blasted Pancreas's Carcinoma / Lymphatic Phlegm's Pathogenesis & Show-off Cadavers / Symphonies of Sickness & Necroticism / Squach Bowels Grind Virus / XXX Maniak's Harvesting / Disgorge's Forensick / The Day Everything Became Nothing's Brutal / Dead Infection's Surgical Disembowellment / Pathologist's Putrefactive Odes / various songs by Paracoccidiocomicosisproctittisacomucosis

Thanks!

For Super Happy Fun Slide get The Undislodgable Nugget Scenario

For Pizzahifive get the split 10" with Powercup and the split 7"s with Archagathus, Infernal Stronghold, and Misanthropic Noise

For Lt. Dan get the split with SMG, the 4 way split with PHF, Violent Gorge, and Satan, and the split with Maximum Thrash

... or really, just get all of it, none of those bands discographies are very large.

I know you can get the PHF/Powercup split and the PHF/Misanthropic Noise splits here
http://acidreduxproductions.storenvy.com/

And get the PHF/Infernal Stronghold split here
http://bullshitpropagandarecords.blogspot.com/

For the rest I'd recommend checking discogs for what labels put the records out and then check them.

edit* and for Archagathus I'd recommend starting with the Canadian Horse LP and the Coffee Grinder LP... then move on to the splits with Sixbrewbantha and beyond to your heart's content.

-Intestinal Disgorge
First two albums. Sickest stuff you ever heard.

-Catasexual Urge Motivation-The Encyclopedia of Serial Murders

-Blue Holocaust-Twitch of the Death Nerve

enjoy, ya sick fuck! :D

..and for some good old school Grind, Death Toll 80k. This stuff rips!

dontlivefastjustdie-- I ordered the Pizza/Powercup split. Thanks.

Zakillah. Nice one on Death Toll 80k. Two tracks in, I just went and ordered it. Seems like intense and searing stuff ferocious like Panzer Division Grindcore/Insect Warfare . I already know and like Catasexual, but I am trying to find a CD that's not $50.

Bolt Thrower indeed. For Those Once Loyal is one of my favorite death metals albums ever, and Honour & Mercenary are up there. Although I like grind (obviously), I like BT slow and slower....Crusade is when they really started to get special for me.

I am looking for animated cartoon (or some stuff for children) youtube vids with grindcore/goregrind music. I've seen something of a kind some time ago and it was quite hilarious. But now it is deleted or I dont remember what was it. Any tips?
