Cane you name some metal songs with only 1 good riff and everything else in the song is complete garbage.

Can you think of any songs like this?

For me, the main riff from Stop by Death Angel is the only redeeming part of the song; and everything else sucks big time, especially the solo.

Most of the stuff on Burning in Hell's second album Believe, which I will be reviewing soon.

Agalloch - Falling Snow. The "The snow has fallen, and raised this white mountain on which you will die" part is fantastic, but the outro is fucking atrocious and everything leading up to it is fairly bland.

Kyuss - Thong Song. I absolutely abhor the first half of this song, it's terrible, but the "Hooray For You" part could be the best thing on the album

Meshuggah - I. As I've said in my review, that song is one of the most unbearably shitty pieces of crap ever recorded, but about three and half minutes in they do one of the best anti-melody random riff things they've ever done.

Being that every song only has one riff, I infer that this album is great.

Shining - Yttligare Ett Steg Närmare Total Jävla Utfrysning

The whole song is rather bland and boring, then after pretty much 5 minutes of going nowhere it picks up with a bass build-up and hits with a closing riff that just summed up the entire song while kicking its ass. The funny thing is that it's a simplistic riff, too.

Windir - On the Mountain of Goats comes to mind. I love the album as a whole, but this song in particular really bothers me. That opening riff is fucking awesome, and the other few times it's repeated, but the whole rest of the song I find significantly worse.

I meant in the sense that there's one good riff on the whole album.

After the neofolk-esque middle part in Ozzy's "Diary of A Madman", at about 4:20, we hear what is pretty much the most awesome riff written in the entirety of the existence of Ozzy's solo career... And it's played exactly three fucking times. WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Khold springs to mind with "Åtselgraver". The opening riff is so distantly eerie, and it builds up great, but as soon they speed things up a bit, the magic is gone.

Sola Fide I by Deathspell Omega. That one riff is amazing the rest of it sucks.

Actually, the majority of Deathspell Omega songs are the same way.

Morbid Angel - Immortal Rites

It's not a garbage song. It's just disappointing that no riff matches Immortal Rite's opening riff on the entire album.

Dark Funeral-Attera Totus Sanctus(the entire album)

This album has various high parts with some clever guitar work, but everything else is lacking.

Magnus's vocals are extremely annoying on several songs from this particular album.

Agreed. I've never been a big Dark Funeral fan as it is and I do think they're one of the shittier, overrated black metal acts but when this album first came out I actually found myself liking it quite abit opposed to their other bland material. Over time I've grown to dislike it more and more because of the things it does lack but it surprisingly does have some good/interesting guitar work and melodies at times, uncharactiristic for Dark Funerals normally bland ass.

The outro riff for Our Truth by Lacuna Coil, comes to mind. The rest of the song is tepid and droning despite being relatively short, but the outro riff I can't help but love. It doesn't belong in the same song at all, but its pretty crushing. Actually, its the only worthwhile riff on that entire particular album come to think of it.

Architecture of a Genocidal Nature (Dimmu Borgir) has a kickass opening riff, sadly the rest of the song meanders with no real purpose (not to mention that awfully retarded middle break with the carnivalesque synths, the fake-as-hell triggered toms and the appallingly ridiculous distorted vocals) and bu the time that one riff returns, it's just too little, too late.

The intro riff to Megadeth's "Countdown To Extinction", and by this I mean the title track. There's about 10 seconds of solid guitar gold followed by a lot of meager interludes under the guise of verses and choruses.

Yeah, that song isn't the best. But i disagree when it comes to that being the best riff. Maze of Torment... come on?

Sweet Amber by Metallica has one really awesome riff right in the middle of the song that they don't use correctly, and then proceed to murder with off key vocals and shitty production. In other words, they make it fit in with the rest of the album.

But if that riff had been salvaged from the pile of shit it was born in, it could have grown up to do great things.

Pantera - Primal Concrete Sledge

The riff about a minute in kicks ass, but the rest of the song is fairy bland and just not very memorable in my opinion.

One very sick Tomb of the Mutilated era CC type riff, but everything else is drivel.

I don't really have examples where the rest of the song is outright garbage. The closest thing that comes to my mind is The March and The Stream by Skepticism. The buildup is not bad by any means, but it's standard lumbering funeral doom with some ok riffs. Then at 6:16 the song transforms radically and the gripping part starts. The new youtube feature that lets you see how replayed each part is really shows that the part from 6:16 is what makes the song so good, while most of the song is just the buildup to it. I often find myself just rewinding to 6:16 because of how much better that part is compared to the rest of the song.

Another example would be The Sullen Sulcus by Mourning Beloveth. Not a bad song by any means, but I always look forward to the part from 5:00. Really like how the growled vocals in the background echo the clean ones, and then the really sad riff starts playing and the song just becomes stellar.

A lot of Mournful Congregation songs are like this as well. The one that stands out the most is Scripture Of Exaltation and Punishment. The solo at 12:18 is so fucking great that the rest of the song takes a backseat.

This one is not about the riffs, but the vocals. Midwintertears by Tristania. Nice song, but everyone always looks forward to 4:08, the part with Vibeke's vocals and the violin solo afterwards. However, the rest of the song is still good, and the transitions between the Morten part to Vibeke's part and then back to Morten are very smooth.

Not only a metal song with just one good riff, but one good (actually one fucking killer riff), and the remainder of the album is forgettable.
I am speaking of Ancient's album The Cainian Chronicle. This riff in this song is the only reason why I keep the CD. It's from the track At the Infernal Portal Canto III

Hmm.... goes to show how different one's opinion of a song or album may vary from one person to the next. Back in the day, I used to love "Lillith's Embrace," and "Disciplines of Caine/Zillah and the Crone" used to be one of my favorite BM songs ever. The opening riff from the latter would've been the most memorable for me, and to this day remains the only one I can remember from it off hand.
