Metal Church might be up your alley, they're Heavy/Power/Thrash Metal, they were around in the 80s, and are still around now, they have a different vocalist though, and I myself prefer the sound of the first guy, David Wayne, god rest his soul. Anyways, check out their self titled, it's fucking awesome stuff!

Fates Warning's first 3, and I'd definitely second Omen.

The fourth Fates Warning too :)

Also, you'll have to check out Vicious Rumors and Liege Lord.

And yes, Heir Apparent's debut is a must listen, absolutely. One of the best heavy/power metal albums in my book. Of course Jag Panzer's debut is also essential.

This thread is like an ocean of good taste.

Get Lords of the Crimson Alliance, Liege Lord and Slough Feg for more good US metal.

Yeah. Hell, I remember somebody asking about good USPM quite recently, so check out the last 5 pages or so of the thread for that, you should find some good stuff.

Actually I think all the bands mentioned in the OP except for Manowar can be considered progressive metal, so it depends what thread you really want to post in.

They have proggy elements, but I don't think Prog Metal was really a genre back when those bands were starting out - although Queensryche were definitely playing around with it after their first album. And Manilla Road have never been Prog, just really epic heavy metal.

like said earlier fates warning

Brocas helm is a excellent one too.

slough feg is sort of a modern soundalike to the classic epic metal bands quite heavily influenced by brocas helm and manilla road.

Pretty much all the bands mentioned so far are very much worth listening too. I would add Helstar to the list. Very good and USPM with a thrash metal edge to their sound.

Wow, I don't see godfathers of US power metal - RIOT!

Recommend absolutely all albums, this band should be more known than Manowar...

Attacker-first two albums
Oliver Magnum-ST
Glacier-All their works
Deadly Blessing-Ascend from the Cauldron
Screamer-Target: Earth
Salem Spade-Witch Hunt
Graven Image-People in Hell Still Want Ice Water

I could recommend a lot more bands with an 80s USPM sound but you limited it to just that time period and country.

Not from the US, but if you're looking for proggy power metal (as the OP suggests), you can't do much better than Adramelch. Incredible band.

WTF? A USPM recommendation thread and no one has yet mentioned Virgin Steele!??!? C'mon man, they were great!
Check out this song: Burning of Rome(Cry for Pompeii)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj_Ae9p1qPA
The vocalist had a distinctive voice. They had some glammy stuff too towards the late 80's but nothing TOO bad.

I'll just add Cities, Exxplorer, Crimson Glory, Griffin, Inner Sanctum, Medieval Steel, Purgatory, S.A. Slayer, Satan's Host, Shok Paris, Siren, Thrust and Tyrant.

Why has no one mentioned Iced Earth?

And "The Fragile Art of Existence" by Control Denied is a good prog power album.
