Well for quite some time now I have been on a pretty sizable drone kick. I just can't seem to get enough of the stuff. During recent listens, a couple of bands have sparked a more specific craving for elements I love to see in drone, but are sometimes a little hard to come by.

1-Climaxes

Drone and drone doom are styles of music not frequently considered climactic. However, their are some bands that use crescendos and other effects to great use. One such example is Asva's song A Game In Hell, Hard Work In Heaven. Another one is a sizable portion of Nadja's discography (they love to layer the noise until it becomes unbearably massive). Any drone and/or drone doom that builds to a climax would be great.

2-Contrast

The majority of drone seems to, well, drone on with a specific sound, tone or atmosphere throughout an entire release (and often, throughout their entire discography). However, there are some drone bands who like to shake it up a bit. One great example is, again, Asva's album What You Don't Know is Frontier. The album is opened and closed with dynamic yet fairly standard drone doom behemoths. However, the two songs in the middle of the album are fairly different. The second song is, for the most part, a dark ambient song with a distant bass-riff underneath and feedback spewing everywhere (until it finally builds to a drone-riff in the closing stretch). And the third song, the aforementioned A Game In Hell, Hard Work In Heaven, is fairly gentle compared to the rest of the album, and is of a completely different mood.

Another good example is Sunn O))) & Boris's Altar. About half of the albumis strange, alien sounding drone doom. But dark ambient songs, and the amazingly depressive "Sinking Belle" trilogy make the album nicely varied. So, any drone or drone doom album with a good deal of variety and/or contrast would also be great.

Thanks in advance.

You'll definitely want to look at more of Boris's material, especially Sun Baked Snow Cave. It starts off with some soft acoustic guitar strums, but eventually builds into a massive drone that just grows more and more intense, until it slowly starts fading away, ending in a manner similar (but notably different) to how it began. It's one of Boris's lesser-known albums, but I think it's one of their best.

You've probably already heard it, but Sunn O)))'s White2 opens with a heavy drone-doom track and end with two lengthy, alien ambient pieces.

Actually, I still need to get Sunn O)))'s White series. I only have everything from Black One and beyond. Thanks :)

Also, Hyatari's debut is another perfect example of what I am looking for, on both counts. I've had that one for a long time but they slipped my mind since I haven't listened to them in a bit. I'll think I'll go give them a spin right now.

I got three bands for you, maybe not EXACTLY what you looking for, but you should give them a try:

Emeralds (especially the 2 CD release 'Allegory Of Allergies'); one of the few bands, where the drones actually sound melodic and epic, with influences from classical music, dark ambient and the improv-genre. A lot of their tunes take time, to build a massive wall of sound, while remaining listenable and (once again) melodic.

Wraiths (releases:'Oriflamme' and 'Plaguebearer'); taking massive influences from ritual ambient and noise, they sound quite unique and again not like the typical drone band. With the ritual-influences, they sometimes create a truly 'shamanistic' atmosphere in their tracks.

Infidel?/Castro! (especially: 'Bioentropic Damage Fractal' again a double album); half drone/wall of sound/noise, half avantgarde electronic/freejazz-grind(!!!). The strangest of the three bands; the most songs start like pure chaotic tech-grind (90% without vocals) with freejazz-influences and shift into (sometimes 15 minute long) drones (which, again, can get quite melodic).

I hope i could help, i know a dozen more of these quite unique bands, which know no boundaries.

Angelic Process fit the description nicely. Coma Waering would be the closest to what you're looking for but all of their releases are amazing.

their previous albums are dronier and less song-based (although they're not completely different or anything)

Cool, I'll definitely look into it.

Thanks again for all the recs guys. With rec threads of mine, I tend to put all the recommendations in a list, and slowly work my way through them (usually if I try them all at the same time, I'll end up killing the desire for whatever I was asking for in the first place). So, I have my work cut out for me :)

Thanks again.
