Although I enjoy the growling "Viking metal" I don't really see how it is viking metal over themed black metal. I feel as though bands like Bathory and Tyr are true viking metal. The only problem I have is that I cannot find any other bands that have these styles. More mid-paced songs with clean vocals, minimal growls and great lead melodies.

Falkenbach is great and the band Oakenshield's debut I enjoy too which is much like Falkenbach.

Any other bands?

I think this would would be an accurate rec, though a bit more on the 'happy' side of things possibly; Heidevolk.

Their album Walhall Wacht is fucking amazing, with some of the best clean vocals I've ever heard period.

Crom is absolutely necessary for you. If you like Bathory and Tyr, Crom will be perfect for you.

Yeah, Crom is pretty much exactly what you're looking for.

Dammit, I came in to recommend Crom, but was apparently already beaten. Twice.

If you can stand another recommendation, I would say the first Nomans Land CD, which has all clean vocals and a very heroic sound (and the second album as well, except now there are harsh vocals too). The lyrics don't make a lot of sense, though.

The new Andras album "Iron Way" could be up your alley. It is a bit on the black metal side, with some tremolo-picked riffs and blast-beats but it's got great melodies and it's mostly clean-sining. Very cool.

I think that Einherjer is a great example of the "pure" viking metal sound, but they are pretty quirky. I love "Dragons of the North" and "Norwegian Native Art" which has vocals that are kind of in between clean and growly but they are very traditional sounding and make great use of keyboards. They sound very folky despite not having any traditional instruments on the two albums I mentioned. They have very cool riffs and some good galloping rhythms.

You'd also dig Ereb Altor. They are very epic viking/doom metal with all clean vocals and an atmosphere that is totally based around viking era Bathory. Check out "By Honour", it's great.

If you want more of the Bathory sound get "Nordheim" by Gjallarhorn. Very mid-tempo with lots of melancholic riffing, cool chanting vocals and vast soundscapes. They share members of Doomsword, who are another band you should check out.

You may also enjoy Nydvind from France. They make heavy use of the choir chanting and have mostly mid-tempo songs, with a couple more black metal elements tossed in here and there. Good atmosphere.

Also look into Oakhelm from the states! They have some speedier sections and use growl vocals but their clean singing sections are totally wicked and they make excellent use of melodies and powerful riffs with some great acoustic sections.

A couple of these groups may not be excactly what you are looking for but I think you'll still find them enjoyable. Check them out when you've got some time.

Nachtfalke, especially Following the Wanderers Path. Very heavily influenced by Bathory. His clean vocals sound quite a bit like Quorton.
