What are some bands that do the same thing as SFU, pretty much, but better? SFU has actually pretty good music but Chris Barnes ruins it with his horrible vocals. (What happened to his voice!?)

Jungle Rot is all you need. Slaughter the Weak is a death metal classic.

I have a soft spot for Death Breath. Doesn't sound like Six Feet Under but I'd describe them as groovy, rocking death metal.

Gorefest - La Muerte is exactly what you want. Slow-to-midpaced death metal loaded with groove. But it's good instead of sucky.

Ahh, you took mine!

Also later Entombed stuff.

If you don't mind a little more black n roll, check out I and Sworn.

Doesn't sound like SFU at all, but Convulse is the definition of groovy death 'n' roll.

By this, I hope you only mean Wolverine Blues. That's a good death'n'roll record but anything after that was seriously lacking. Albums like Same Difference just sound like a second rate Candlebox clone, or something.

I do not understand how you call Chris Barnes sucky at all. I used to hate him when I first got into death metal but the deeper I got into the better he became

Same is the case with me, I used to hate Tomb of the Mutilated with a passion but then I just woke up and realized how insanely awesome Barnes is, especially in the 2 bonus tracks on those albums.

Torture Killer. Insanely groovy death metal, good shit. Barnes is on vocals but he sang for them before his vocals devolved to "decent".

The pair of you have obviously not heard his awful vocals on SFU's albums. Very different from his work with Cannibal Corpse.

I've heard EVERY Barnes album, thank you very much. And while his SFU vocals are irritating at times, they are still pretty good IMO. Except Death Rituals... now that's a steaming pile of fecal matter...

EDIT: typo

And Graveyard Classics II isn't? Easily the worst idea ever - a groovy death metal band covering sex-based, bluesy hard rock. Simply repugnant.

Korpse is pretty rockish death metal, they sure beat Six Feet Under at least.

I really like both Graveyard Classics albums. I guess they hold a soft spot for me, since one helped me get into bands like Savatage and Thin Lizzy and the other restarted my love affair with AC/DC, I actually owe it to SFU that I'm listening to trad metal and rock these days :D

Edit: Oh, and their cover of War Machine is fucking awesome, probably the best SFU song. The wicked guitar tone, the ugly, churning bass and Barne's smokey growls...

Death metal bands doing silly covers of pop and rock songs is the lost form of humour. Six Feet Under and Ten Masked Men are both really awful, both conceptually and musically.

I don't think SFU does it for humor, and last time I checked they never did pop covers. Barnes is a genuine hard rock and heavy metal fan from what I've heard.

Not Death'n'roll, but an excellent Grind'n'roll band is 'Splatter Whore' from the USA. They have just released a new album, which i haven't heard anything from as of yet, but if it is anything like their first release 'Kaviar Die-Hards', its gonna be a groovy grinding rock'n'rollin romp of fun to listen to.
