I've done some research but I've been unable to find anything definative.

I've been stationed in Japan for awhile and decided to try some of the local flavor for a change of pace. On a whim at a CD store I picked up:

Galneryus: Beyond the End of Despair
Concerto Moon: Rise from the Ashes

It took a little while to adjust to the vocals, but once I did I got absolutely blown away by Galneryus. Enough so to get another album later.

My question is, does anyone know of other Japanese bands that show a similair style of prog/power mix similair to Galneryus? Thanks.

Fatima Hill comes to mind right away- power/prog with a heavy Rainbow influence and a unique female vocalist. Great band, IMO, actually one of my favorites in the power metal genre. I should probably mention, though, that the vocals are quite unusual- the vocalist has this very dramatic quasi-operatic style, which is of course pretty common for female power metal vocalists, but the unusual part is that she's a deep-voiced contralto instead of the usual soprano. I like her vocals a lot, myself, and find them to be one of the highlights of the band's music, but YMMV.

About the only Japanese power metal band I could recommend is Argument Soul - they were good fun when I saw them a few weeks ago with Dreadnaught.

That sounds just about what I'm looking for, appreciate it. What about Japanese groups that are more heavy into the progressive or neo-classical stuff? From what I've read, most Japanese groups that try to pull off a neo-classical feel just end up sounding exactly like Yngwie, which isn't necessarily bad, but I'm wondering if there is anything more unique out there?

Trying to stock up on Japanese CDs while I'm over here. Despite being expensive when bought at a CD store (around $30 for a CD) many Japanese groups' stuff are even more expensive when bought online. I've also heard good things about X Japan, so I might look into them as well as Fatima Hill and Double Dealer when I get a chance.

This topic interests me.

As for X-Japan, their first two are great, third is pretty good, the EP Art of Life is a 29 minute long song with a tad avante-gardish piano solo that takes up 8 minutes, but I enjoy it and their last is heavy on ballads though it's a good for what it is.
