I don't know if I just haven't been paying close enough attention in the past few years or if this really is a recent thing, but there seems to be a rise of 'metalpunk' bands out there--bands that mix various subgenres of metal with various subgenres of punk to create a hybrid that hits the sweet spot and are enough to make those of us who straddle both worlds giddy. The first time I became aware of the term was in an interview with Darkthrone when they described their most recent material as 'metalpunk'. Off the top of my head, Syphilitic Vaginas are the only other band I can think of that would fit the term. What other bands are out there? It'd be great to hear more material from this still loosely defined genre. And speaking of loose definitions, maybe we can come to some sort of consensus of what metalpunk is?

To be clear, I'm looking for post-millennium material. It's no secret that punk has had close ties to metal throughout its history (where do you think thrash metal got its name?), so let's stick to newer bands here.

A lot of people seem to say that this band is pure speed/thrash but songs like Conquistador seem to have a lot of characteristics with bands that are branded metalpunk.

Black Kronstadt and Summon the Crows play Crust/ Black Metal sort of like Darkthrone's later, but more Punk influence in vocals and production.

Yeah I'd like to add to this by requesting some blackened punkish bands; something like Bone Awl or (obviously) later Darkthrone. Something that maybe mixes punk riffs with black vocals.

I've been looking for this since DT brought out Hate Them!

EDIT: There's a crust punk band called Totalt Jävla Mörker (Total Fucking darkness!) that are so hard as to sound metal, although they might be grindcore - which is basically a version of metalpunk

Now, the crowning jewel of all albums that mix punk and metal in my book is Poison Idea - Fear the Darkness. Just listen to those riffs in Alan's on Fire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5lKiFcnUlM

Of course, it's from 1990, so it doesn't fall into the specified time frame.

Martyrdöd

The granddaddy of this is English Dogs, a band that was combining punk with Iron Maiden-influenced power metal back in the early/mid 80s. The most obvious punk element is the shouted vocals, but the mean, dirty riffs have a definite "punk attitude" to them too. Partly because of the punk influence, partly because they're simply creative guys, the riffs are pretty inventive and the solos/leads even more so; and I say that having heard A LOT of contemporary stuff. Check out To the Ends of the Earth or Forward into Battle, the dual-guitar leads alone are worth the price of admission.

Not a newer band, I know, but still worth noting.

If you can stomach the production and the occasional spurt of Japanese weirdness, GISM's Detestation is a great blend of vile d-beat hardcore and traditional heavy metal. I love Sakevi's vocals on this record, and Randy Uchida's input is incredibly tasteful; he is definitely a criminally underrated guitar player.

Meh, i personally really dislike this lable already to be honest. And its not just because it sounds retarded. I assume you dont reffer to metalcore and co. when you say 'various types of metal mixed with various types of punk' because you seem to reffer to a specific sound, which narrows it down to that sound.

And we have crust! Its part metal and part punk and it describes later Darkthrone and Amebix. I guess you could always add 'with ___ influences' at the end but you get the idea.

I have never heard Syphiliptic vaginas but if they are crust (with or without ___ influences :P ) then there you go, no need for 'metalpunk' because crust describes this sound.
If they are NOT crust-like then you are not reffering to one specific style but various and therefore -no need for a new genre- as the respective bands' already existing lables define them more accurately. ie: Amebix- Crust with Speed Metal infl, Darkthrone- Black Metal/Crust.

I seriously remember cringing when i read that interview, and id also hate to see another addition to the already huge list of metal/punk ;P hybrids.

EDIT: Also i submit ISKRA. Good s/t.

Yeah, me too.
Its too vage and can range from crossover-Thrash, to Crust to Death/Crust or Black/Crust hybrids.

However now that I am posting here, I might as well throw in some bands, right?

Driller Killer...Crust
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HzJVoSru0w

Disflesh...Black/Crust
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIJjlbX-tYY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJKoF04UCRk

Sanctum...Death/Crust, basicly early Bolt Thrower worship.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3rMxfBlyEk

And yeah, Iskra rule!

Eisenwinter - NS Black metal from switzerland. Specifically the 2005 split is what I heard and the riffs are very hardcore street punk/Oi sounding.

Or how about Absurd? They're pretty punkish. There's also the first and second Glittertind CD's, though the newer stuff is more folk metal.

G.I.S.M.

Very metallic, very punkish, very ugly. One of my favourite bands.

I can vouch for this, the English Dogs are pretty sick; I should probably get round to reviewing them at some point. English Dogs are quite noteworthy to me as they're a punk band playing metal rather than vice versa with the thrash bands (as often is the case, take a song like 'Ausgetbombt' for a reference). Baywatch is looking for bands from this decade but I'm going to ignore that and tell you lot to check out this band:

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Boneless+Ones

It's punk (about skate boarding, but we won't call it skate punk - lest you get images of Blink 182) but with thrashy riffs and metal leads from '86. Pretty nifty. A lot of hardcore bands were going in this more metallic direction around the same time (some did it really well, like the Cro-Mags and others sucked - didn't TSOL have a glam album?) but regardless of whether this is that groundbreaking it's pretty killer.

That song was the first tolerable hardcore song I've ever heard. Kudos!

Maybe you should check out:

LOUDPIPES
http://www.myspace.com/loudpipessweden

A really aggressive, yet catchy and rocking blend of Crust, Punk and brutal metal. They only had one album out - unfortunately - which is available as a used copy for a few bucks normally.

Oh, and of course they have a lot of songs on their myspace page...

And if you also like it a bit more melodic and a bit darker/gloomier - taste this:

SMOKE BLOW
http://www.myspace.com/smokeblow

especially their old albums have a very heavy mix of hardcore, punk and doom metal. The newer stuff is less aggressive but still very good (imho)

Black metal which flirts with punk, or goes all out happens to be a favorite of mine. Here are some good ones

Infernal Stronghold. A somewhat recent discovery, awesome black/thrash played in a very dirty crusty way. All the stuff I've heard from them is great.

Martyrdod. Much like Skitsystem(a band they share members with) dark crust with a huge dose of black metal melody as well as vocals. Their second album is great, dunno how i feel about the new one.

Iskra, a blackened grind/crust band. very viscous and devastating.

DödsÄngel, one women blackened crust band. Really good and plenty of dbeats. A good mixture of the genres.

Abyssgale. nice little gem from greece, fierce black metal with a big amount of punk influence.

Hotbild's great, good mixture of black metal and crust, lies more on the crust realm of things.

Bone Awl. Primitive black metal set to Oi standards. Lots of punk stomps and simple power chord affairs. Latest ep is great.

Ancestors. Similar in recording to Bone Awl, noisy noisy black metal with a strong punk vibe. Mark McCoy of the power violence band Charles Bronson, as well as Das Oath is the sole person behind this band.

Some non bm bands.

Effigy. Devastating crusty thrash from japan. Awesome awesome stuff. Really really good. No bad bands from japan in extreme music as far as i know.

Audio Kollaps. Death grind with a strong crust influence. Music From an Extreme... is great.

Behind Enemy Lines is listed here as metal, but they're defiantly hardcore with some metal influence, check them out. Know your Enemy kicks ass.

G.A.T.E.S from Japan is like a modern day Motorhead, good stuff.

Since you want newer stuff, I'll recommend Wastelander, it's punky speed metal with some black metal influences and post-apocalyptic lyrics. Despite them being labeled as "thrash" in a lot of places, I don't think they are very thrashy.

The punk/metal borderlands is where most of the great music being created today is coming from, it seems to me. I'll second Black Kronstadt, Effigy and Behind Enemy Lines. Here's some other stuff I love that strikes me as belonging to this realm:

Malveillance
Blackened d-beat.

Order Of The Vulture
Says "Death / Crust / Hardcore" on MA but way more black metal in their sound than that would suggest. Raw and viscous, all their stuff so far has been great.

Catharsis
Metallic somethingcore. Lengthy and songs with complex structures...

Malefaction
Grind with black metal riffs, local band that later evolved into a black metal band. Where There Is Power, There Is Always Resistance is the album to look for.

Brody's Militia
Thrashcore? Fast and crazy, thrash riffs here and there. Split with Widespread Bloodshed is fantastic.

Pisschrist
Really heavy crusty d-beat.

Spear Of Longinus
Specifically on TYONS, Nothing is Forever, and, Forever is Nothing, and .....and the Swastikalotus.

Impaled Nazarene
Needs no introduction... early band in this 'style' I suppose.
