Here I am again, looking for a distinct type of black metal. This time, I'm looking for something with a strong sense of melody (Not melodic black metal like Wintersun or Old Man's child though), preferably midpaced, with strong guitar lines and chords. Some good examples of what I mean are bands like Drowning the Light and Satanic Warmaster, but the specific types of songs I mean are ones like these.

Through the Noose of Existence - Drowning the Light
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LX_SBw8sE8&fmt=18

Distant Blazing Eye - Satanic Warmaster
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6dff_7hMAU&fmt=18

I'm aware my request is kind of vauge, but listen to a minute or two of the songs I posted links to and you'll surely know what I mean.

Thanks for any reccomendations

I'm pretty sure Walknut will suit your fancy. Youtube quality sucks shit, but believe me, the melodies in this album will be far pronounced on the real thing.

Also, one of the songs on the album not found on youtube, Midnightforest of runes, I think, is one of my favorite songs of all time in this category of black metal.

Cool, this is partially what I was lookin for. Doesn't have the melodic feel I was looking for, but it does have that "wall of sound" quality to it, where it just fucking washes over you. I like it, probably gonna try to find their album in a week or two. Thanks man.

I'm struggling to wrap my head around this request. I know it probably doesn't have to be specifically related to depressive black metal, but is that kinda what you're looking for?

Also, I know its a rather obvious suggestion given the fact that you've listed Drowning The Light as a good representation of what you want ... But have you tried Pestilential Shadows? That song has the "wall of noise" with melody buried beneath it. If you want better produced bands, try their more recent material: Here.

A song taken from Trist's 'Zrcadlení Melancholie', probably the best depressive black metal album there is: Polsedni Cesta.

Forest Silence.

I could spout off a million bands along the same lines ... Like Coldworld, Nyktalgia, Krohm, Sombres Forêts, Hate Forest.

Edit: Oh yes, what about bands like Wrath of the Weak and Procer Veneficus' ambient black metal stuff?

You may need to be a bit more specific. :P I'm so lost. :(

I've gotta recommend Gris (Can). To me they're pretty similar to Walknut but better in just about every way. Better production but still has that effect of the the wall-of-sound guitars washing over you. That, and the melodies are much more prominent and better written. Il etait une foret... is a huge improvement over their first album, by the way.

Gris are pretty much everyone's favourite. If you like them, check out the newer collaboration between two Canadian powerhouses ... Miserere Luminis. They don't have much out, as of yet, but an album is coming and its going to be IMMENSE.

Check that song out man, it's Black God Aftermath by Naglfar. It's a bit more fast paced than what you posted, but I think it's really good melodic black metal.

EDIT: Shit I forgot, check out Ulver's first album Bergtatt. The last song, Capitel 5, is really good. It might not be strictly melodic metal but I think it gets really atmospheric and melodic towards the end, right before the acoustic guitars. The Drowning the Light song sorta reminded me of it (atmosphere wise).

You might want to check out Forgotten Woods (1994-1996) and Valhalla (Rus) - the one that released "Winterbastard".

It has a lot of melody. It's not very audible due to raw production and shitty audio quality on youtube, but the former aspect makes it even more appealing in a esoteric kind of way. I'm sure you'll like the song Skinfaxi a lot - the best part starts a little before the 2 minutes mark and it only gets better:

Windir has that kind of songs aswell, although they're more blackened viking or something. The good stuff starts at 1 min mark or so. Shitty audio quality again, the album version sounds infinitely better and you can actually hear the rhythm guitar. :P

You probably know Drudkh. If you don't, here. The best parts in the first song are saved for last here, aside from the stellar guitar solo which comes quite early (at 2:41). The second one needs no words.

I definitely recommend Coldworld and Raventale aswell, they sound somewhat similar to Drowning the Light, although I find the song you posted to be pretty horrible (happy riffs, retarded "suicidal" vocals), whereas the two aforementioned bands are great.

Raventale:

Coldworld:

If you are already familiar with these, do ask for more.

Morker, pretty fluffy melodic black metal like Dimmu's first album with acoustic guitars/piano etc

Though being relatively raw you should try ARCKANUM's latest album "ÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞÞ".
It is quite dense and good produced raw black metal but with decent melody both in riffings and chords as well as in the tremolo parts.

Haha shit I just recommended Farsot in another totally different thread but they kinda match your description too. They ain't that obscure I guess, and their production is fairly good but I'm sure you'd like their melodies... that is if you haven't heard of them yet, of course

Woods of Ypres

Astrofaes I think have songs like that to. Been a few years since I listened to them though.

For a slightly more doomy feel then check out Forest Stream
