I've been thinking lately and not a lot of bands try to do something completely new..or do they?

Just looking for bands who have done something that has barely been touched before or is pretty different - doesn't matter what it sounds like really as long as it's somewhat metal - I'm just exploring a bit and would like a little help on this journey.

Mr. Bungle- An older band, but they were and still are unique. Try their self-titled CD and California, both masterpieces. Combine anything from metal to jazz to surf rock to....Egyptian Polka? Idk, but it's definitely interesting and different and comes together to sound quite awesome.

Diablo Swing Orchestra- Metal, Swing, Classical, Opera. All rolled into one. Check out their newest single:

Perhaps a bit too obvious, but Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is what your looking for. No one even comes close to their sound.

Dog Fashion Disco and the successor Polkadot Cadaver. Similar to Mr. Bungle, but with a more lighter sound.
Birushanah. A japanese sludge/doom band with influences from eastern folklore and theatrical performances. There´s no other band, that sound like them.
Carnival In Coal, the basis is death metal and gets mixed with disco, chamber music, jazz, pop and other genres, but still sounds very metal.

While on that subject, you may also want to look into their label mates Stolen Babies.

I thought about Malodorous here actually. Completely unoriginal in every sense but still sounds like nothing I've ever heard.

raism on aesthetic terrorism.

*industrial black metal* with magus wampyr daoloth of necromantia and mika of impnaz with idk gabber elements? each song is followed by a rmx. not really good in my book (their EP is much better), but different as you requested. really weird record.

master's hammer on slagry.

that apocalyptica plays metallica on cello album. there's also a band that did a darkthrone cover on cello I think. it was on their myspace page. don't remember the name though.

that thorns rehearsal without drums and vox is very different too, very original and ahead of its time.

also anubi from lithuania come to mind. freaky shit. can't describe that one. can't even call this black metal, very crude mix of...........stuff.

perhaps check out eläkeläiset even though you can't really call this metal.

not really by a metal band, but dj skazi did a psytrance remix of seek and destroy. don't know though if this is what you're looking for:

These aren't all particularly new bands, but you should listen to !T.O.O.H.!, Portal, Phlebotomized, Cosmic Atrophy, and Demilich for weird-ass extreme metal. I also second the Mr. Bungle recommendation; you won't find much else that sounds like them. The debut is insane, and I've reason to believe their other albums would be as well.

Wait....you haven't listened to California??? That's certainly their most "different" and diverse album. Also, one of my favorites, pretty much tied with the debut.

Give Stolen Babies a shot, and also try modern Blood Stain Child (Techno Metal). If you count "Nu Metal/Alternative Metal" as metal, Skindred plays what they call "Ragga Metal".

Exivious' debut is quite unique. All instrumental, fusion/metal. About the closest thing to the material on their debut is Cynic's Traced in Air, if it were instrumental. Even then, they're worlds apart. If I remember correctly, substantial portions of the album are improvised.

The entire thing is streaming on their website, so check it out.

I should kick myself in the head for not mentioning Ulver and Kayo Dot earlier. Check them out. As with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, they all have their own unique sounds (hell, Ulver has several depending on which album you listen to), and are not just a crazy blend of genres.
