I seek two things here. First, recs for bands that incorporate the feature I will shortly describe as best I can. Second, an explanation of how this particular sound is produced (I am almost embarrassed to ask for the latter, for seeing as the effect seems simple, I’m sure that the explanation will be obvious to most here; but alas, I know very little about the technical aspects of music. Please forgive my ignorance).

The sound I am referring to is epic, powerful and deep. My best guess is that it involves playing a lower bass note, while at the same time striking (is that the right word?) one of the guitars (rhythm guitar?) and letting it purr; often accentuating with cymbal-strikes and/or keys. The effect can be done to many degrees, and it is very easy to recognize in all cases. Here are some examples:

Ceremonial Castings (really pronounced @ 4:17; when the blasting starts the keys come in to give an even more deep and epic feel): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgAJTSFfgC4

Vinterland (very clear @ 2:14): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyXAPhb4API

Destroyer 666: (@ 2:10): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBfuLclYYlA

Intestine Baalism: (several times during the solo starting @ :53): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F7-q_y4wxM

Lost Dreams (@ :40): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZigmXrAS2io

Kroda (@ :13) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wUmU7rAWak

Bathory is also a good point of reference.

There just has to be a name or commonly-used description for this “effect”. It is very distinctive (like I said) and I’ve heard it in just about all types of metal. I hope my description and samples make clear what I am talking about.

So, can someone tell me how this sound is produced? What is it commonly called, if anything? And who are some bands that incorporate it heavily?

Thanks.

Hmm...
try the band "Klabautamann" their albumn "Der Ort" is amazing.
The fifth song "Waldschrat" has what your looking for....I think.

They are really progressive Black Metal I hope you enjoy.

Edit:I have no clue what you would call it lol...we could just make up a name right here.

Agreed. This band is epic.
Found them from a bulletin someone had posted on myspace, haha.
