Hi,

I'm looking for huge acoustic sounding drums in extreme music.

Exemples are:

autopsy - mental funeral

HoF - blessed black wings

old wainds - scalding coldness (less in front)

The thing is i'd like to know if there are any bands like that outside of the black/doom genres? I don't care about genres as long as you get that impression of "listening to the drummer's kit in a room" without artefacts (triggers + reverb).
Mastodon and let's say immolation are bands i do not want.

(If you recommend a bm or doom, death/doom band make sure the drums are in front)

thanks

What I've heard of The Gates of Slumber has a very good drum sound. Very open and acoustic, with plenty of power behind them too.

I haven't listened to it for a while, but I remember Morpheus Descends having a very loud, real drum sound. Sounds a bit odd, but it gives the album a lot of character to me.

I find it kinda strange you said Immolation? I have all there albums and I don't think any of there albums have overly triggered or effected drums. On the contrary Failures for Gods has one of the most natural sounding drums I have heard in death metal. Another one to check out would be Morbid Angels Covenant, very low bass kick and nice real sounding hi-hat. Not your typical typewriter stuff. Oh and one more on Garden of Shadows Ep/ demo Heart of the Corona. Very natural sound on the drums. No clik clak!

thanks

yes Morbid Angels Covenant that's it!

You're right about immolation, a track like reluctant messiah has booming toms i think (i'm no drummer) but the kit seems hidden behind guitars and voice.

As Pfuntner puts it i find immolation drums acoustic sounding but not very open. Maybe it's a question of drumming as i hear more in front drums in cephalic carnage although i don't think they are specially natural sounding.

The Gates of Slumber are great thanks, what i enjoy about the drumming in doom is that you have plenty of cymbals.

I think Darkthrone always has exquisitely natural and up-front drum attack, except on "Soulside Journey" where the Sunlight electronic kit might possibly have been used (sounds almost exactly like "Indecent and Obscene"). Check out "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" if you haven't, and of course, the "Goatlord" session for great, natural drums. I also think they're great on the last couple of albums.

A blaze marked my initiation into BM.
It clicked for me because i was coming from doom, rock and maybe it's just me but a blaze has a very doomy vibe.
But thanks i hadn't even thought about darkthrone. The drums are fantastic

If you have other black metal bands with that level of drums recording i'm all ears

Ok then one more from the early 90s...check Malevolent Creations Retribution if you can. Not only one of the most bad ass death metal albums of all time but it has very real sounding drums.
