I am looking for some folk metal with:

1. Deep clean vocals as the main (if not exclusive) vocal delivery.

2. Lots of acoustic parts

3. Slower tempo (not necessarily doom slow but slow)

4. Sad music (I know that's vague... but I can't really describe exactly what I mean)

Thanks in advanced for recommendations. :)

The album most like what I'm thinking of is Folkstorm of the Azure Nights by Temnozor (though it's not completely like what I described, and there are tracks on that album that don't fit the criteria above at all)

Maybe Mael Mórdha?? They are a celtic-flavoured doom band, not pure folk metal by any means, but they use a lot of the instruments, have some acoustic sections, etc and the vocalist has a deeper (and really great) voice.

The song "Tales of One Thousand Winters"

For sad and clean give primordial a listen. The song 'Coffin Ships' inparticular. Its a song about the Irish immigrants escaping the great famine to America only to achieve more and endless suffering. Has a 'Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' feel to it in that is Hauntingly beautiful but sombre as Fuck. From 2:20 onwards I can almost shed a tear. Naihmass Nemtheanga's Vocals are so bloody emotional.

Um, the happiest folk metal ever isn't really what the OP seems to be after.

I would suggest Heidevolk, deep singing, not really sad or even good IMO, but some people really like them.

Crom could be a choice, though its not folk as such, more slow and heavy power/viking metal. Vengeance is a great album....

:durr: how did I forget this band?! Great choice of song, but you might spoil him by showing him the best bits first. When I saw them live back in May for Paganfest, I JUST held myself from crying seeing them play that song... Naihmass' sorrow was so heartfelt. This band doesn't merely play music, they craft art.

The first two Kataklysm releases. Avoid everything else they've done though.
Chaotic as fuck, but still pretty melodic.

It doesn't qualify as "sad" music, but Odroerir fits your other qualifications. The main male vocalist has a rather deep voice, and there are some beautiful acoustic sections and vocal harmonies throughout their second album.

Empyrium would fit all your criteria except that the sung vocals are used about evenly with harsh vocals.

I think Falkenbach's ...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri fits your description perfectly, very sorrowfull, very acoustic, no gruff vocals.

Some people may question its 'folkyness' though. Amazing album though.

That was amazing. My ancestors left Ireland for the United States during the famine so this is probably how they felt.

I had thought of suggesting Crom as well, though the music's not tremendously "sad" or melancholy in such a sense throughout the album and rather lacks in the acoustic area in most songs. If there's any song off Vengeance that'd fit, though, it might be this one. Definitely worth a listen even if it's a bit off in some areas:

Crom- A Life Unbearable

Cheers to that my friend. I sorely regret and curse myself for not seeing them when they toured here earlier this year. Next time they come by I will do anything, even if it means quiting my job, to see them! haha

Glad you like it. A small part of me has Irish blood but even before i was aware of this I had felt a pang in my heart for that period of time. There is a monument to them here in my town (And believe it or not I only learned of it today while taking a short cut home :/)

The Stars Will Fall and Hammer of the Gods both have a bit of acoustic in them- great tunes too, esp. Stars....

You could look into Vintersorg's discography, bit of acoustic there plus deep singing...Also, October Falls have pure acoustic albums which are good. No clean singing really though....

Good god. Normally I would only have a passing interest in stuff like this, but jesus. Seriously...I really, really like metal but so far it's been more about enjoying the music than having some sort of emotional chord struck with me, but this song has officially changed that. Thanks.

It really evokes a sense of Irish pride within me. You know, why don't us Irishmen break out the "Irish indenture" card, like some black folks do.
We can say: "Hey man, the English totally fucked us for a long time, and we came to America in horrible conditions".

Just sayin.

Excellent stuff! Thank you for revealing this band to me, truly unique. Can't stop headbanging.

I second Tuatha, seems about right up the OPs alley.

Hahaha! I might start doing that. I'm about as Irish as Patty O'fuckin Flannigan.

And in contribution to the topic, anyone have any other Primordial recommendations?

Um, basically everything from their last four albums is pretty excellent, with all of "The Gathering Wilderness" and "To the Nameless Dead" being somewhere around perfection.

This thread prompted me into getting these albums, and I fully concur.
