Have you heard Nick Drake? The dude killed himself after his third album in the early 70's.

Seconded, Drake's material is fantastic. That 3rd album ("Pink Moon") is my favourite, really sparse with just his voice and guitar:

Things Behind The Sun

I love Nick Drake's acoustic works, but his voice is just.. ugh. It's hard to digest. Otherwise, great rec.

I wouldn't say Comus is necessarily "depressing".. but they are pretty much essential if you want to listen to something with acoustics. Progressive/acid folk rock FTW!

Another seconding is Marissa Nadler. Amazing, seriously.

Now. Most neo-folk, like Darkwood and Current 93, can be depressing. Also try the acoustic band Nest. Released a split with Agalloch. Beautiful!

Snarf, try Mondstille "Am Ende.." the first half of the album is melodic black metal with acoustic's and violin's but the second half is all entirely acoustic/violin's, a very overlooked band imo and well worth a listen, these guy's must be well schooled in classical for they sure can play the acoustic with skill and create some nice melodies.

you should take a listen to SIG AR TYR's "Sailing the Seas of Fate" album
http://metal-archives.com/release.php?id=100832
Though you find also pure Bathory worship (Hammerheart) on it, it also contains a lot of solely beuatiful acoustic tracks.

here's one of them:
