Alright, I'm still not sure what "bestial black metal" is, but hit me up with it. Sounds like something I'd like to try.

Edit: sounds like it's somewhat synonymous with war metal. So give me both I guess.

This is tough cause I'm not sure if they are real genres or just kind of a general type of raw/thrashy ugly black metal. Here's a few that might not be perfect, but all I can really think of at the moment:

https://schrat.bandcamp.com/album/seelenfresser Haven't really listened to this yet, but I liked all their previous stuff
https://helleruin6.bandcamp.com/album/war-upon-man
https://odiumrecords.bandcamp.com/album/desecration-rite
https://ende-official.bandcamp.com/album/em-n-etan
https://urzeit.bandcamp.com/album/anmoksha
https://axisoflight.bandcamp.com/album/axis-of-light
https://wearg.bandcamp.com/releases

Thanks, most of these sound great.

Like the title says, looking for stuff similar to Paysage D'Hiver. I've been listening to black metal for a long time now but lately I've been craving stuff similar to Paysage in terms of atmosphere and the raw lo-fi production, something evocative of a wintery landscape with a hypnotic quality almost on the borders of something like some harsh noise wall stuff that's out there (yet way beyond just listening to static for an hour)

Short Version:
Can anyone recommend any Black Metal to have on in the background whilst reading?

Long Version:
I've recently been loving the Earthsea series by Ursula Le Guin, the wizards and magic is so beautifully written. I've been wanting some good BM to compliment it, I don't want to be too specific with my request but something wizardy or dark magic kind of vibes, something that works in the background so not too in your face. I've enjoyed having Paysage d'Hiver on purely for how thick the atmosphere is. But I also put on In The Nightside Eclipse which is high class wizardry. So if there's anything that gives off wizard vibes and big atmosphere then let me know! Drums low in the mix is a big plus.

Perhaps fairly obvious answers but some of Vinterriket's stuff is great. I quite enjoy Gebirgshoehenstille.
If you didn't know, Darkspace is the same guy from Paysage d'Hiver though I've never quite loved Darkspace as much as I love Paysage.

Also, unfortunately hard to find copies but Trist https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Trist/60728 the album Hin-Fort is amazing.

I'm looking for some black metal similar to Les Légions Noires bands, particularly Mutiilation and Brenoritvrezorkre. Basically something that is very lo-fi and creates a melancholic atmosphere, without veering into the realm of DSBM. I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out.

You may find what you are looking for with Drowning the Light, and possibly also with K.F.R, Mons Veneris and Vetala. Xasthur is a bit more different but you might like it, it was infuenced by Mütiilation.

I don't know Ursula Le Guin but if her work has connections with Tolkien in a way or another, some music that reflects his world will work well, like Summoning. If it's more on the Lovecraft way, try The Great Old Ones and similars.

This is not an easy request as these are three singular albums, but the first thing that comes to mind is Svartalvheim by Ancient. I think it's not working too badly.

I know and very much enjoy Drowning The Light and K.F.R. Don't particularly care for Xasthur. Mons Veneris and Vetala sound like what I'm looking for, thanks.

Approach-wise, Le Guin doesn't really have much in common with JRRT actually, she's more like "anti-Tolkien" in parts even :) Earthsea in particular was inspired by various not-exactly-white cultures, so the closest I'd recommend would be Ildaruni, from Armenia. Technically Armenians are white, but probably exotic enough for this purpose...

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out. I think I didn't describe what I wanted too well. I only mentioned the book to say that I'm enjoying listening to BM whilst reading. I don't think the racial origin of the music makes a difference to the suitability of background-whilst-reading-black-metal. Not trying to criticise your responses, I am thankful for the recs and I'll give them a listen for sure. - (EDIT) - Just listened to a bit of Ildaruni and I like how the album starts off, I think it gets a bit too riff focussed to work as good background music but I'll definitely be listening for other purposes. Thanks!

If anyone has any other suggestions for black metal with atmosphere, maybe low mixed drums, not too dissonant, something that could be the backdrop for immersing in a good book, I would welcome any response.

What else out there sounds like Mystifier's Goetia? It's one of my favorite extreme metal albums, and I'd love to hear anything else with a similar style and atmosphere. Going through the similar artist tabs on their MA page, there's a lot of great bands, but it's not quite the same to me. Sarcofago, Beherit, Blasphemy are too primitive, while Mortuary Drape, Varathron and the rest of the greek bands are too melodic and don't quite have the same murky atmosphere.

I think you'll find a better answer in the death metal realm. Have you heard Innumerable Form's first demo?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaSZnbYKgic
Pale Existence is a fairly obscure band that released two amazing demos, really good shit:

Looking for bands similar to Averse Sefira. I love the complex intricacies of their music, but also feel that they are still managing to write memorable, catching riffs and passages.

I'm also really fond of Akhlys, Nightbringer, and some Deathspell Omega. Intricate and interesting but not to such an extent that the songs feel like tech death cloaked in black metal atmosphere, if that makes sense. I'm not the best at describing exactly what I mean admittedly, but those bands are all examples of what I perceive to be intricate, complex music that I can grab onto, but not so intricate and complex that it becomes forgettable or lost on me.

Hey can somebody recommend an album or band that uses 2 or three different vocal ranges from low to high without being a war metal genre. I love when they mix 2 or even 3 vocal ranges like Bestial Warlust or blasphemy, but I want to find something like Satyricon's Dark Medieval Times. To be more precise something more Melancholic, evil and aggressive at the same time. I really enjoy when the voices have a slow rhythm almost like a prayer. I don't like fast, high pitch screaming like Emperor or late Cradle of Filth to name a few. I think a good vocal arrangement can create a really creepy and evil atmosphere. I've heard Archgoat and similar bands but they are not what I'm looking for. Any suggestion?

Looking for some albums and bands similar to that of the Russian black metal band Forest. More specifically, those that have the melodic and atmospheric instruments of Like a Blaze Above the Ashes, Foredooming the Hope for Eternity, and As a Song in the Harvest of Grief.

This Trist album was really good and I had never heard it before.
I've been really enjoying the Olhava album from last year which I totally overlooked. It's very Paysage D'Hiver like as far as atmosphere goes, but more of a smooth and sparkly production. Some of the best stoney zoney black metal I've heard lately.
Olhava

I feel like I should have more answers for this, but haven't been listening to a ton of this kind of stuff lately...
A few things I'm thinking of that you might already know:

I'm glad you enjoyed Trist! I'm still hoping I'll be able to find a copy to purchase but my searches in the past have never found anything apart from YouTube versions.

Ah Olhava! I loved their self titled from a couple of years ago, but not checked out anything else.
Thanks for the reminder, I'm going to dig into their other work now.

I think Vintlechkeit nails the whole Paysage d'Hiver vibe really well. They offer nothing new to the genre, or even this type of black metal, but it's well executed for sure. And they release a lot of stuff, so there's a lot to dig into.

Black Metal that sounds like World War I or World War II?

No I don't have any reasonable explanations of what that sounds like, except for these very specific songs:

Kanonenfieber - Menschenmühle - This album is apparently all about WW1 although it's all in German.

Helleruin - All his music is about war/history. I really like the "A Thousand Dreams" EP and the album which he said in an interview are about WW1 and 2.

Thinking about all those bands together I came up with stuff like: Selbst, Nordjevel, Mork Gryning, Human Serpent, Downcross... I actually just noticed there's a new Downcross album coming out in a couple days and the teaser track is completely disgusting, I'm excited to hear this one.

might be a long shot, but since your request is kinda vague too, do try sarin's "...für die welt" demo if you come across it.

Can anyone recommend something along the lines of Judas Iscariot in Thy Dying Light. There is also a lesser known band called Ygg but it is one of the best stuff I have heard (it has a melody but the melody is a very dark melody)

Hello,

i'm looking for some good mid tempo/ lofi black metal bands like Kekht arakh or under a funeral moon by Darkthrone.
Thanks for your help.

Try Mütiilation. I'd especially recommend their debut album "Vampires of Black Imperial Blood" since it follow a similar style of Pale Swordsman, albeit more raw. I'd also give Vlad Tepes's side on "March to the Black Holocaust" and Mrtva Vod's "Flora of Evil" a listen as well, the latter release having the lyrics done by the Crying Orc himself.

Hi folks,

so I've been kind of digging around the fringes of my tastes recently, and one thing I'm curious about is upbeat, uplifting and triumphant-sounding black metal that doesn't really shade into post-black. It's quite far from what I appreciate the most about the sub-genre, so I got this idea of testing this out and challenging myself in a manner of speaking. Bonus points definitely go to entire albums with such music+vibe. Any recommendations?

I'm gonna assume you don't really want blackgaze. But if you do, Jord by Møl is a beautiful and mostly upbeat sounding blackgaze album. Favorite track is "Bruma".

I'll do my best with actual black metal though:

Astral Path - An Oath to the Void: spacey black metal that sounds reasonably happy and uplifted.

You probably know Drudkh already, but they have some happy-sounding songs, like "Sunwheel".

Fen - The Malediction Fields: more upbeat than most black metal, although it does wander into some post-black territory.

there's tons of this stuff around, let me see...
vothana has been dipping into this sound recently, but it's quite a lot of material to sift through.
maybe flame of war from poland, check out transcendence, though my personal fave is europa..
you could also try most of the roster from CW productions (cirrhus, furdidurke, bilirubin, grand mood, kestrel etc.), furdidurke & cirrhus being my faves. not sure if this is what you're looking for, but if one of these acts catches you, chances are they will all. start with this one maybe or grand mood:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlzkR7Uw064

then there's flaming ouroboros, who have debuted recently with two demos in this style. and could also be the distinct riffing style from the rostorchester/totale vernichtung/eisenwinter guy is up your alley. love that guy.
and maybe forteresse? "themes" is my fave album by them.

that's all for now, just off the top of my head.

I could use more uplifting black metal myself probably. A few that come to mind are Odal, Lutomysl, Mare Cognitum, Seth, Vehemence, Aorlhac, Sielunvihollinen (uplifting I think, but not really triumphant) I'd probably go with the newest album for most of these.

I'd say a good chunk if not all of this record fits the bill: https://el-ahrairah.bandcamp.com/album/el-ahrairah-2

Also some of the Winds of Gladsheimr discography, particularly this lengthy track that they contributed to a split: https://windsofgladsheimr.bandcamp.com/ ... ful-winter

Can anyone recommend something along the lines of Judas Iscariot in Thy Dying Light. There is also a lesser known band called Ygg but it is one of the best stuff I have heard (it has a melody but the melody is a very dark melody)

That album is a tribute to Judas Iscariot

Order of Nosferat last album

Ww1 and ww2

I know Marduk panzer division,Fronthschlein,Minenwefer,1914

I'm getting started with depressive black metal. Looking for stuff that's fuzzy, but not too fuzzy. Somewhere between ColdWorld's "Melancholie²" and Xasthur's "Telepathic with the Deceased". The ColdWorld one is my favorite so far, I'd love to hear more like that, but maybe a little less cheerful. That album has some really major-sounding progressions, kinda fucks with the depressive mood here and there.

I'm also interested in music that mixes ambient with black metal, but not anything noisy and deranged like Emit, I'd rather feel comfortable than horrified. Black metal with ambient atmospheres, or ambient with black metal elements, you can go either way. As long as there's a mix. "Hin" by Trist has been linked up there in the thread, and that sounds pretty interesting. Might listen to that tonight. I swear there were some other good examples I'd found on YouTube, I'll have to dig.

Maybe try Nocturnal Depression with 'Four Seasons to a Depression' and 'Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera' by Mortifera (if you like this one, there's also Celestia)
In a more Burzum vibe you have Abyssic Hate's 'Suicidal emotions' and Nyktalgia's homonym album.
