I was wondering if someone would be able to make some recommendations.

I'm looking for some raw feral Black Metal not unlike the 2nd wave Norwegian bands. My prototype band would be Darkthrone on A Blaze in The Northern Sky or Mayhem DMDS.

The sound I am looking for is with blast beats accompanied with a very crunchy edgy guitar tone, the classic chainsaw sound.

Some albums I like are the following

DarkThrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Mayhem - DMDS
Judas Iscariot - Thy Dying Light
YGG-YGG(from Ukraine)
Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the Impure
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Beherit - Drawing Down the moon
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath(that crunchy guitar tone is present though not as developed as it would later become)
Gorgoroth-Antichrist
Satanic Warmaster - Carelian Satanist Madness
Barathrum - Infernal(Finnish Black Metal--great sound, great album.)
Clandestine Blaze - City of Slaughter(the guitar should have been louder in the mix, but overall a tremendous album)

I've been looking for this stuff recently too. The thought came to mind when listening to Blut Aus Nord's Memoria Vetusta albums (specifically II) and thinking that this was just the perfect spring/summer black metal. It feels so bright and wonderful.

The only other recommended one that comes to mind right now is Merkur by Klabautamann, which I always associate with lush nature (as opposed to the grim and dying nature most of my favourite music seems to focus on).

Edit: oh, and Vintersorg as well (despite the name) but I suppose his music is a bit more polarizing.

Yes I intend to listen to Taake. I heard it in samples and it definitely matches the sound signatures of the Norwegian scene.

His Majesty by Svartsyn? That's exactly how I'd describe it. Raw, slashing riffs and no frills at all.

Here you go.

Abkehr - In Asche

No punches pulled here. Killer guitar tone and ripping riff-work.

Katharsis - 666

Razor wire black metal.

Azelisassath - Evil Manifestations Against Mankind

Wickedly twisted.

Armagedda - Only True Believers

A minor modern classic in my opinion. Has a DMDS feel to it. Utterly feral.

Graupel - Am Pranger

Great album, though it might be a little too clean. Brutal as fuck though.

Heresi - Psalm II Infusco Ignis

Another nearly hidden raw gem.

Har Shatan - His Legacy

Standard recc from me when it comes to this sort of style.

Matricide - Black Mass Gathering and Holy Virgin

Both raw and cold as anything you will find. Amazing album and EP.

Erebus Enthroned - Temple Under Hell

Killer Australian black metal.

Slidhr - Spit of the Apostate

Myrkr - Offspring of Gathered Foulness

Frosty as fuck.

Enjoy.

S.V.E.S.T. - Complete Discography
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal (This album should be right up your alley)
Mutiilation - Vampires Of Black Imperial Blood
Belketre/Vlad Tepes - March To The Black Holocaust
Paysage d'Hiver - Paysage d'Hiver (Demo)
Moonblood - Blut & Krieg
Hate Forest - Scythia (Demo)
Burzum - Filosofem

well, thanks a lot.

I'm going through the listed bands.
I liked Azelisassath - Evil Manifestations Against Mankind. quite gritty BM. Nice edge to the guitar and good cymbal work on the drums etc.
Armagedda - Only True Believers. true stuff. no pretensions. Healthy dose of guitar solos as well so that scores extra points.
Graupel - Am Pranger. like it more than Katharsis and Abkehr but not more than the above two.

Have yet to listen to the rest. Got a bit side tracked. I was lisetning to Summoning-Lubgurz and I suddenly began exploring Atmospheric BM.

I'm looking for bands like Mystik, that are pure and raw 90s melodic black metal worship.

Idk why absolutely nothing like Mystik but Old Forest quickly came to mind, it has tons of melodies all around.

I just found this band, I have to share. If you like raw disgusting riffs, I don't know how you can't like this. They just announced they are recording a new album too, this is from 2015:

Okay, so I've really been getting into atmospheric black metal (and a lot more bm in general actually) lately, but pretty much all I've listened to is new releases. So can you guys point me in the direction of the "founding fathers" of the abm genre.

Probably should note that the only "classic" I've listened to is Burzum's Filosofem.

Bit of a strange request, but I'm looking for a black metal band with some speed or thrash influences, that makes songs about eastern mythology? so like Chinese/Japanese demons, warriors, wars, magic, that sort of thing. I don't mind some experimental influences/song structures. And a raw production quality is good as well, I don't want to find something too polished.

Uhhhh are you familiar with the Japanese Sabbat? I'd look into two of their more 'serious' sounding albums: Karisma, and The Dwelling.

I had to put on The Dwelling immediately. I'm usually a real whiner about hour-long albums but they crafted it so well.

Some examples of newer releases you've enjoyed would help, since "atmospheric" can be used to describe a lot of black metal, but here's a few off the top of my head that had a lot of influence on me at least.

Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times. I've probably never suggested this and not even sure why it came to mind, but it's definitely a classic and atmospheric:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff_uv337yIE&t=266s

Moonblood:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_rF6MjCDgw

Forgotten Woods. I think I like their 2nd album the most because of a couple really killer songs, but haven't really listened to them in years:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlfZH-TBXzI

Anything by Hate Forest and or Drudkh (you're probably familiar with them already) Purity was always a favorite of mine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjaqsOWKcPs

Even Immortal's first album is strangely very atmospheric and different from anything else they ever did:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCKEznpQhbA

There's lots of other's like Windir and Lunar Aurora, I never listened to those as much as a lot of people did.

Around 1995 is when there started to be a lot of black metal that was less interesting in looking "kvlt". The year 1995 in particular had the debut albums by Ulver, Blut aus Nord, and In the Woods. Those are classic albums that have that raw edge, but still have that hazy dreamy atmosphere.

I'd never looked into them before, but its basically what I was looking for. The dwelling is some good shit man, it'll take me a while to get through the rest of their stuff though. Cheers

Cheers guys, will be checking out these albums over the course of today. With regard to what I've been listening to, there's been a little bandcamp trawlage to find new bands but mainly exploration of the Atmospheric Black Metal youtube channel. Would link, but my youtube is taking waaaay to long to load.

you should try sigh's debut album scorn defeat. very hard to describe, and it's definitely special and unique, whether in a good or bad way is up for you to decide.

Thanks dude, it's sick stuff. I like the obscure/mystic atmosphere, but it actually has some 'guts' to it. I'm trying to find some more asian bands like this, they seem to capture that vibe pretty well.

What albums, songs or bands do this for you guys? all sub-genres welcome. thank you

Can anyone recommend something with lyrical themes about space cults? Something similar to that of the band Hoth. I have been on a kick of obscure dark side/Force-using organizations in Star Wars, and would like some new music to go along with it. Essentially any style of black metal is fine.

Hi guys, I'm looking for Black Metal that sounds like Mgla. I've listened to Uada and Kriegsmaschine already, so any suggestion on those lines would be very appreciated.

Thank you.

try khandra - all is of no avail. although you certainly won't find anything with more class in this style than mgla themselves.

Vocals are nothing alike obviously, and the sense of melody is nowhere near as developed, but there's some very Mgla stuff going on otherwise.
