To me, DMDS sound-alike was never anything close to the experience of DMDS. The album is a classic because it's greater than its individual parts. The experience of listening to it - the first time, especially - is like an immersion in total evil. The only album that has given me the same experience is Svartidauði's Flesh Cathedral. Both albums were growers that I wasn't enthusiastic about at first, incidentally. Some other fans I've talked to agreed that this album gave them the same feeling as originally discovering De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Just my fanboy two cents. :D

I've been on a major Manes binge recently again. It's been good to hear Manii being active (the reincarnation of), but it's just not the same. In that feverish/nightmare dream vibe as Under Ein Blodraud Mane, what albums would you consider being a nice one to listen to as well? I know a lot of black metal, but you never know what I have missed!

The problem with Manes is that no one sounds like Manes. i asked the same question ages ago and got no replies. Xasthur pretty much based his existence on mimicking Manes. And Strid has a similar vibe. Beyond that I can't think of anyone...

Strid definitely does. Xasthur did not succeed if that was his attempt, imho. Not that I dislike Xasthur. I guess you're right. In the very long time listening to this genre, I never discovered a band in that sound.

The Eye and early Blut aus Nord is the only stuff that comes close to early Manes that I know.

Hi guys. I'm looking for some BM with clean female vocals as the lead vocal. I'm thinking like a black metal version of The River.

BM with clean vocals sounds like an oximoron. The closest thing I can think of is Cairiss.

Thanks for the rec but that's not scratching the itch. I guess I just have to write some BM and get on to Vicky Walters.

Greek black metal is usually not well known for speed, you will find a lot of atmospheric and mid paced material in that scene:
the only fast, punishing bands i can think of are Naer Mataron and Kawir, but i'm not the biggest fan of both

If it's your first look into that scene the "mandatory" albums are Rotting Christ's Thy Mighty Contract,
Varathron's His Majesty at the Swamp and Necromantia's Scarlet Evil Witching Black. Those album contain some of mankind's most bad ass riffs :)

Then if you want to explore further you can look into other Rotting Christ albums (Triarchy, a Dead Poem, Non Serviam), Thou Art Lord (later material is very good!) , Zemial (Nykta is very good) Nocternity, Macabre Omen...

Then for weirder stuff you can try Spectral Lore (III and Sentinel), Thy Darkemed Shade (pretty fast and technical) and Hail Spirit Noir

This is just an overlook on the scene, but it should be enough for starting, i hope you enjoy this music as i do

Iceland isn't known for fast black metal like Norway or Sweden. Their national sound is a dark, dissonant style that mirrors the country's bleak, volcanic landscapes. The keyword is atmosphere - really fucking sinister atmosphere at that.

Svartidauði - Flesh Cathedral
Zhrine - Unortheta
Abominor - Opus: Decay
Carpe Noctem - Vitrun
Sinmara - Hvísl sjarnanna

Myrk is the most classic "heavy and fast" BM band I know.

It's actually a pretty varied scene. I would also recommend Wormlust (more psychodelic), Nadra (a lot more influenced by heavy metal), Almyrkvi (closer to Blut aus Nord) and Rebirth of Nefast.

I tend to dislike "hipster" black metal, but this one took me by surprise:
https://vvilderness.bandcamp.com/album/dark-waters
sounds "fresh" and like a labour of love. very well produced, too.

Proclamation and Suspiral. Maybe Altarage too.

https://suspiral.bandcamp.com/album/del ... nscendence

https://altarage.bandcamp.com/album/the ... ching-roar

Plenty of great bands from Spain but most of them don't sound like Teitanblood: Balmog, Marthyrium, Lvme, Qayin Regis...

Any recs for sad/melancholic/depressive black metal bands that aren't dsbm? Looking for bands that have a dark atmosphere, are not too monotone, have song structures (not one tremolo or droning riff for a whole song like in a lot of dsbm), lots of melancholic riffs. Folk and doom inluences are welcome, unless it's monotone funeral doom or happy folk metal. Preferably gritty/rawer sound, but melodic black metal is OK too.
Examples:
Belenos - Mélancolie, Belenos - L'Enfer Froid (their later albums are Celtic black metal, but the early ones are more medieval and depressive)
Dråpsnatt - Mannen i min Spegel (borderline dsbm, but with with very varied song structures)
Abigor - Weeping Midwintertears (the whole first two albums are great, but I especially like their sad melodies)
Nocte Obducta - Winter: Dezembermond

Andavald.

Knokkelklang.

I'm assuming you're already familiar with Gris (their last album isn't dsbm and has a lot of folk influences).

I'm addicted to this song. Anything similar? I know Unreqvited's debut albums comes close.

P.S. I've recently discovered this playlist and realised BM scene in Serbia got bigger. Finally something good from this wretched country.

Hey! I'm looking for Black Metal with epic atmospheres, like Summoning, Caladan Brood, etc.

I just heard this song, and I don't know if it's strictly Epic Black Metal but it's exactly what I'm looking for:

Hello.

I'm looking for black metal or black/doom metal songs similar to the ending of Verdunkeln's "In die Irre":
https://youtu.be/4mGOWvT_QWo?t=357 (from 5.57 - ...)
A repetitive + heavy-sounding rhythm and some audible guitar playing (the more melodic and emotional - the better).
It doesn't have to be an entire song in that style, - bands that have songs with similar quite long parts in their discographies also fit into the request.

Thanks.

Verdunkeln are a very unique band, I wasn't able to find anything close to them. This sound is pretty atypical of black metal, black metal is usually not this heavy.

Check out Ruins of Beverast, they are probably the closest one, even though they are pretty different.

Maybe also this (from 2:20)? They aren't black metal though, barely metal at all actually.

Belenos are awesome, but I can't compare them to Summoning or Caladan Brood. They are not epic black metal, they are pagan black metal.

Check out Menhir, they are less black metal, but very epic. Some other bands of interest are Moonsorrow, Primordial, Windir, Winterfylleth, Helrunar, Wodensthrone and Forefather. In general pagan black metal is probably what you're looking for, even though Belenos are the best of the bunch for me.

Hey! This band really fits the bill in my mind!
Utstott. Both albums really kick ass.

https://utstott.bandcamp.com

EDIT:
Perhaps that may not exactly hit the nail.... still very good. please check it, but perhaps this instead... more like Belenos. Who's Kornog album I find to be much better than his last one. (The rating on the MA isn't that good, but its only one review. I love it though)
Hegemon or Diamond Eyed Princess. Same members. They have some really awesome material.

Diamond Eyed Princess https://diamondeyedprincess.bandcamp.com/album/korlguel-al

Thanks for the recommendations.

The sound of the rhythmic component should not be that identical, just heavy enough to create a high contrast with more melodic riffs/solos.
I really like when these guitar melodies are drowning in heaviness of drums and/or rhythm guitar yet still audible, especially when all the musical instruments have some unusual non-clean sounds.
Verdunkeln's songs certainly have some very unusual sound and rhythm.

Ruins of Beverast's music sounds very close to what I'm looking for.
I'll check this project in more detail.

That heavy part of the song "Depression" by Uaral also sounds very good, but it would work better with some more uptempo rhythm.

I understand what you're looking for, I also find that aspect of Verdunkeln to be very cool. Sadly, it's hard to find anything close to that, since like I said black metal is most of the time not heavy, but trebly and cold.

The fusion of heaviness and black metal melodic guitars can be found in black/doom metal. What do you think of these songs from Forgotten Tomb and Bethlehem? They are not as heavy as Verdunkeln, but this is the closest I can think of.

If anyone can think of any other bands with a similar sound, I would also be grateful.

Check out Almyrkvi and Rebirth of Nefast for some of that heavy, doomy black metal.

Thats a nice split. Almyrkvi does the space black metal thing better than anyone besides Darkspace.
