I don't know that many Canadian bands, actually.

John_Sunlight, I was listening to Magnum Opus by Lunar Reich. Are there releases by the band that are more reminiscent of the second wave stuff? This is aggressive and and hateful like some of the stuff, but much more avant-garde and weird. The atmosphere is very unlike the mysterious and dark one that saturated almost all of the Norwegian second wave.

Awesome! great to hear you like it. That album "Atmospheric Black" is just incredible. That's actually one of the albums on my list to review soon. Hails!

Similar to Xasthur... maybe Leviathan (USA) Paysage D'hiver, Wigrid, Drowning the Light.
Similar to Folkvang... Hmm that's tough, but if you like Atmospheric Black you would probably like the band Drudkh, maybe "Sargeist - Let the Devil In" Maybe "Sad" from Greece although their vocals are a lot more harsh. Can't think of much else at the moment.

No, the demos are more wonk and the second album is much more modern. I thot Magnum Opus was very ITNE-ish...

Sick6Six, you got good taste. Respect.

You should join the elite black metal club with me and Ilwhyan. :)

Not familiar with Folkvang, but depending on what you like about Xasthur, I'd recommend the split between Xerbittert and Taarma: http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Xe ... rma/295658

Possibly the other works by these bands, too, but I haven't checked yet.

Spoiler: show
The only track that's on YouTube from the split (as far as I can tell) is the intro, so it doesn't exactly give you an excellent idea of what the band actually sounds like, but who knows.

Can anyone give me a primer on 90s German BM? I'm in the mood for raw old school style black metal and don't know much about the German scene.

If you like Drudkh, check out Irrwisch, they do that beautiful single note repetition with the backdrop of immense atmosphere thing on this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgz99XTgdu4

Walknut is also good, I think fitting in more with the grand feeling in that kind of style by maintaining a strong wall of sound with melodies and tension stretched out to make a trance feeling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfhZe10FYoI

While not from the 90's Negator is a band you def should check out, they are heavily influenced by this era and are quite excellent and what they do.

Endstille's early albums have always been some of my favorite, especially "Dominanz" I also enjoy Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Zorn, Nargaroth, Permafrost. Most of these bands started in late 90's or early 00's, but I think they are good examples.

Also the brand new Sarkrista, while it's from 2013 it fits the raw old school style that you are looking for.
I think this song fucking owns

Sarkrista is a lot like Satanic Warmaster or Sargeist, so it sounds more like Finnish black metal, but it's a good rec.

Also check out early Todtgelichter (depressive), Der Weg einer Freiheit (fast, melodic), Katharsis (raw), Lunar Aurora (atmospheric, experimental even) and The Ruins of Beverast (as the aforementioned, but in a different style - especially later on, it has death/doom influences).

If you like Endstille, check out Malus aswell. Malus is more atmospheric and has beautiful synth interludes and melodies. If you like Todtgelichter's first album, check out Wolfsmond. If you like Lunar Aurora and The Ruins of Beverast, check out Nagelfar - it has the musician behind TRoB on drums.

Yeah, a lot of Finnish influence here, but still has that German spark.

I suppose. It sounds much better than Satanic Warmaster despite being very similar, so that's something.

Not that you can really tell that they are female vocals, but... Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult and Lucifugum. Not only are they the vocalists, but the main force of the band. I prefer DNS, Lucifugum is pretty weird, but I like them if I'm in the right mood.

Demonic Christ is a black/death band fronted by a woman. Anguished is a one-woman band, but I'm not sure if I can recommend that.

Darkestrah are a fine band to check out. Their vocalist also does throat singing on some tracks.

Sortilegia. The vocals aren't exactly prominent, or the focus of the songs, but they're well-executed all the same.

Oooh yes, the mighty Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult. Ripping, frosty black metal with a female vocalist/guitarist. They also have a new album out that I have to get my hands on...

EDIT: dammit, they already got mentioned :grumble:

I need Krallice type black metal. Extremely instrumentally layered, twin guitar solos, lengthy composition and lo-fi production. I also tried Weakling, drone-y but not instrumental enough.

I was wondering if anyone here knows of any black metal in the style of Woods of Infinity, especially their last album 'Förlåt'?

Looking for well-produced black metal that has dark ambient passages. I don't want something that combines the two too frequently, but I want black metal that has kind of an "eye of the storm" dark ambient passages.

Also looking for cold, calculated, and hateful black/industrial metal.

Thanks in advance.

Seems like Darkspace would be totally up your alley, not only for the black metal / dark ambient but it's also got quite a heavy industrial vibe.

[Edit: just read you meant well-produced. While Darkspace doesn't sound crisp and clear it's obvious they put a lot of time in the overal sound mix of their music.]

Give Evilfeast a whirl, start with his 'Lost Horizons...' album, grim black metal with some fantastic ambient passages, production is not bad at all.

I have been getting into the same taste for BM lately! You must check out Paria
After listening to an album of theirs on cassette had me digging for more BM!

So I'm going to post a few bm band's I've discovered through this thread and other places, a lot of it goes quite a few pages back or on other threads. Some well known bands, some not so much, all worth checking out.

De Magia Veterum - Harsh, dissonant black metal that reminds me of a less melodic DSO:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRf13BIJQIs

Negative Pane - Complex lead driven black metal with a very cavernous production:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KTUIsZW60A

Graupel - Dense material with a surprising amount of groove:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLNN24lVkfE

barshasketh - A real gem from the 'nobodies' thread, grand, melodic bm:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UI41APzdPlE

Forgjord - Super raw and slightly melancholic band - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwgtUbUjKoo

Horna - Rawish very well known finnish group who's exact style changes every album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CrQIK018FY

Omega Centauri - Spacey prog bm with touches of dissonance and ambient - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA32OTWHny8

Darkspace - Universally regarded ambient black metal with a suffocating outer space atmosphere:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBHnJNEbNZw

Martolea - Negura bunget esque folk/black - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0TtkVCjrO0

Zwartplaag - Raw orthodox bm driven by tremolo leads: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkJw58OCHf4

Cirith Gorgor - Epic, fast riff driven bm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w62NyOPJ1-4

Kvist - A folkish norweigan 2nd wave classic - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s80QBT5xfEQ

Throndt - Foresty, romantic black metal from germany - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=228Alx0hrL8

Horn - vast, alpine like bm with lots of acoustics and touches of folk:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7mYKz_9xnc

Schattenvald - Slightly experimental band that goes between sweeping melodies and blasting orthodox material, quite raw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nfhA4pwn6g

Sigh - Well known, hugely experimental band with psychedelic influences with a whole mish mash of genres added in, each album is almost a new sound:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dqKbzRqc5g

Odal - More dense, rawish german bm:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao9fkTIVwOc

There's a few more, but that's enough for one post.

Sick6six, I read your Flagellant review, and since you clearly enjoyed the new album more than me, would you say it grew on you, since I found it dull and a pale ahadow of the debut. I might've expected the wrong things from it.

I definitely liked it more on my 2nd or 3rd listen, but I think it's a different style than most of the black metal bands we like. I'd give it another listen or two and see what you think.

Some awesome bands that deserve more attention for sure! I just noticed Zwartplaag says they are "on hold" that sucks. Graupel - Am Pranger is fucking badass! I'm not sure how active they still are though. Barshasketh is amazing and I wrote my first ever review about them. I have not really listened to a number of those other bands that I deleted from the quote, I will have to get around to checking them out. I took Horna out because they are pretty well known these days.

Edit: I would like to point out this band from the USA called Chronaexus. I just heard them for the first time on the new split with Dodsferd and I am fucking impressed. Fast, raw, hateful, and some awesome guitar solos even. Adding this split to my albums to review list.
