Ok so I've been really getting into the latest twilight album monument to end time, which has been weird because normally I'm a fan of completely different stuff. But basically my taste in metal has 180'd, going from mayhem and gorgoroth to some of the newer acts. I've been on a hardcore kick of twilight, blut aus nord, agalloch, fen, deathspell omega, enslaved, woe, sigh and alcest lately.

So I was wondering what is deeper down the rabbit hole for post black and then dissonant riffing ( DSO ) and things like blut aus nord, woe, and twilight.

And yeah I know not alot of bands on their have much in common but I think this particular set of bands is pretty popular for people who have outgrown the cold and lifeless soundscapes of some of the usual black metal vanguards.

Mainly what I'm looking for is well composed and made black metal with decent production values.

Have you checked out Altar of Plagues? Their album White Tombs was a phenomenal mix of Black metal and "post metal".

You might enjoy Agrypnie (strange name I know), their last album "16[485]" (stranger album name!) fits this discription, and is an excellent release overall.

Good stuff dude, you should also def enjoy Lantlos (if you have not already heard of them), Niege of Alcest does vocals for them, their new album "Neon" is a great piece of work.

I'm not so sure that transitioning from second wave bands to Alcest could be called 'outgrowing', but whatever floats your boat I guess.

For black metal with good production values, I would recommend the Reclaim EP by Keep of Kalessin. Cool warped spacey intro, furious drumming, and dynamic guitarwork with lots of aggressive, invasive riffs, solos even, and a great vocal performance from Attila Csihar to boot.

Another well produced record that doesn't sound like blackened fluff is the newest album from Nitberg; Nagelreid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pFBGacUv9Y

The vocals are very RAC influenced but despite that it is one of the more interesting clean-produced BM albums I've heard recently. The riffs, the drumming! The first minute and a half in particular are an utter delight.

Agrypnie's live guitarist, Patrick Baumann, has a band called Melkor. The vocals are a bit on the weak side but his one album is better than any of Agrypnie's stuff if you ask me. Not that it's 100% similar (Melkor have a folkier feel generally) but it's also well-produced.

Lantlos is awesome, really awesome atmosphere with them.

Nitberg while awesome is a NS band which has always been weird for me. The music is seriously fucking good though so I cant turn a blind eye to them.

Melkor seems pretty good.

I really hope this post rock black metal fusion thing keeps up, its such a bad ass combination the two genres compliment each other so well and hearing the different styles of doing it is awesome.

And to clarify I love the cold and lifeless soundscapes of the other black metal bands, but hearing new stuff is always nice, and you get alot more people willing to check out agalloch then Marduk.

A really good band sort of similar to DSO is Nightbringer. I like both their albums, but the latest is my preference. Very clean production too...

The Meads of Aphodel (latest album) is very reminiscent of Sigh...I'm not a huge fan of the cartoony stuff, but they do it quite well...Lots of grandiose orchestration. Better then Sigh imo...

You could try Furze from Norway for some odd sort of dissonant stuff; its very much acquired taste, but has its moments.

Also- do you know The Ruins of Beverast? If not, get to know them now :)

And Drudkh. Any album really...

All of those are very good and bands I already listen to, the meads of asphodel in particular... theirs really nothing as fucked up as they are and i love it. Drudkh is simply amazing and the ruins of beverast i have neglected a bit but are another favorite of mine.

Sadly I just cant get too into furze, I hear they're name dropped alot but can never seem to understand why.

oh and that lantlos album neon is fucking amazing, I think I've listened to it like 3 times in less then 24 hours and am in the middle of the 4th play through.

Excellent Jarek, thought you would like it, glad to be of help. Ok here is another gem for you to try, again an overlooked band, Canada's Black Lotus, some folk elements here and there but a strong release all round.

For melody with a touch of atmosphere try out Aldaaron's debut, very solid release.

Thanks for the replies to my previous request, verdunkeln is great, can't believe they flew under my radar.

I have another request which may be a long shot, perhaps a question for mors gloria if he is still around. Are there any (greek) bands whose albums are based on the Homeric epics? It seems like a great topic to make an atmospheric/nostalgic piece from.

I've already used the advanced search but came up empty, but perhaps anyone here can think of something. Great topic, hope it keeps up for many more pages.

Heretoir is amazing, so haunting. All there songs are sticking with me which is awesome. The vocals are so i dont even know how to describe them but he does some stuff on the ep before that release that is beyond memorable.

Thank you for the awesome rec's dude, pretty much nailed what I was looking for without me actually wording what I was looking for properly.

Lantlos and Heretoir are 2 bands that I will be enjoying for a long time, god/satan/odin willing.

I really enjoyed the Wolves in the Throne Room Live at Roadburn DVD, but they might not be the sort of black metal you're looking for.

There's this song on the "In Autumnal Fog" compilation (disc 1) from a band called Svartvarg:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsSF972k9lY

I fucking loved it, and then I discovered that the band, unfortunately, only have this song. So I would like to ask for the BM masters around here, is there anything like it, out there? Just please don't throw at me any aleatory shoegazey/BM, I already know most of them.

EDITED:

I'm looking for black metal that's both aggressive and melodic. Think of releases such as Behemoth's ''Sventevith'' or Vinterland's ''Welcome My Last Chapter''. I'm not bands that sound similiar per se, but production, vocal and guitar wise I'd like to hear something with the same ideas.

Production: decent, nothing too clear nor raw. Think of something similiar to ''Welcome My Last Chapter'' or ''Sventevith'' that has a cold feeling, but still makes everything audible enough.

Vocals: similiar to the ones of Vinterland or Dissection. Controled, not too high pitched nor ''emotional''. Kind of easy to get into black metal vocals that sound still quite powerful. I'm not not looking for Abbath esque vocals either.

Guitars: should create atmosphere with riffs, but I'm not looking for simplistic riffing in the way of ''Transilvanian Hunger'', nor anything ''riff-oriented'' in the way of Bathory or later era Immortal. The best example I can come up with is Vinterland. Leads are welcome, as long as they're played with emotion, rather than are all over the place.

Keyboards: these are welcome, but I'm not looking for symphonic black metal. They're fine if they're around once a while but I don't want them to dominate an album.

Hopefully this gives enough information. I prefer songs on mid/faster tempo, but I'm not looking for doom/black or blazing fast black metal.

Not a Dimmu fanboy but this is amazing, imo. Maybe close to what you`re looking for? Heard this 5 years or so ago and it`s still sounds magical.

Edit: shit some of the vocals sound Abbathy, oh well..

Maybe Unanimated?

I find Sacramentum to be quite like Vinterland (actually I found about Vinterland searching for bands like Sacramentum, haha), maybe somewhat faster, but I would say that the guy who asked for recomendations already know about them.

I love xasthur like a fat kid loves cake so I would say to start at the beginning, but if you just want something to listen to to give you a feel of what your getting into then his best work is the funeral of being.

After funeral of being just go forward from there in his discography, if you like alot of what you here definitely check out there earlier Ep's and demos and his first full length.

Ondskapt. A personal favourite of mine, with a diamond hard melodic edge. The whole album is on the same scale, with many a variation.

Heresi. This band is comprised of Ondskapt's former vocalist interestingly enough, and the album Infusco Ignis is a raw, powerful (with melody) gem.

Mgla. Rather overlooked in many cases, this Polish act has produced some solid, engaging cold, raw BM. Truly excellent stuff.

Eternity. Another overlooked band in my opinion producing high quality BM with dedication.

Not sure if it's exactly what you're after, but it's a start.

Re: Xasthur: Nocturnal Poisoning is probably the best place, like Jarek said, though so many of his albums are rather similar that it hardly matters. Suicide in Dark Serenity is pretty quality stuff, as well as his work on the Nortt split. Haven't heard anything past To Violate the Oblivious, maybe I should look into his latter-day works and see if they're any better. Xasthur always frustrated me because I liked half of what de did a lot and hated the other half. I'd silently curse him every time he'd break off a nice riff to suddenly halt into a shitty hi-hat interlude. Fucker, I know he could write better music than that, he was just having us on. :)

As far as post-influenced stuff, there're a bunch of newer underground bands playing this style, with varying degrees of quality.

Deafheaven: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiPO0x2yw-k
Clair Cassis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oVCNF3FYmw
Ash Borer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvBhB_lOc-w

Then there are others not quite as "post-", but embody the spirit of more forward thinking black metal.

Withered: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG4hc2Ltak8
Klabautamann: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7NZY-OboUA
Ludicra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BFUAOLXu-s

Secrets of the Moon don't sound at all like any of these, but I recommend them any chance I get, since they're in the realm of well-composed black metal with decent production values.

From their latest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsFrCi3FMXo
From (what I think is) their best, Antithesis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3iah1Hw_S0

Not melodic, but it sure is agressive if you ask me.
Comes complete with faggots argueing on youtube about religion, so get some popcorn and enjoy the show:

I'm looking for black metal that's both aggressive and melodic. Think of releases such as Behemoth's ''Sventevith'' or Vinterland's ''Welcome My Last Chapter''.

Somebody already mentioned it, but Sacramentum's Far Away from the Sun is quite similar to Welcome My Last Chapter. I also find that Taake satisfies me in much the same way Vinterland does.

Give me stuff that's similar to Deathspell Omega or the new Ascension.

DsO is so crazy and dissonant yet I always have parts of their songs stuck in my head and that is what I'm looking for!

Thanks!

Hey everyone, is here anyone that could recommend some stuff that sounds like Alcest? I discovered them a couple of weeks ago and in a matter of days I fell in love with this band! Don't know how to describe the music really, dreamy athmosphere and both soft and harsh vocals. I've already listened to Amesoeurs (which I loved) and I'm going to check out Les Discrets.
Anything else that I should check out?

I've always felt that the newer incarnation (Si Monumentum... on) of Deathspell must be taking a lot of influence from Ved Buens Ende. The riffs, clean parts and dissonances are so similar sometimes, I feel like those haunting, Garm-style VBE vocals are about to pop up any moment. You might already know these guys, but if you don't they're an absolute must to get into. They only released one album and a demo of atonal, atmospheric and very memorable, unique material. Pioneering, classic stuff that definitely sticks with you.

There's really nothing like Fas, Chaining the Katechon and Paracletus. Nightbringer's Apocalypse Sun is the only thing that's somewhat similar, but it's still nowhere near the greatness of those DsO works.

First of all:
Lantlos- Neon
Heretoir- Self-Titled

Then if you want some more similar items:
Caina- Temporary Antenna
Liam- Journey, Two Years and a Fragment
Fen- The Malediction Fields
Sleeping Peonies- Rose Curl, Sea Swirl
Westering- Help A Body

And if you haven't already, check out the precursors to this sound in Ulver's Bergtatt and Agalloch's Pale Folklore
