Hi, I'm pretty big into black metal, but it just occurred to me that I've never heard much of depressive black metal. I was hoping some people here could give me a few pointers into the classics of the subgenre.

There's no better start to DSBM than Mutiilation's "Remains of a Ruined, Dead, Cursed Soul".

Looking for a band like Diamatregon, but with no sampled elements. Clear but raw sounding, etc.

Can anyone suggest some contemporary (2000 - present) raw black metal that feels "fresh"? As in not something that's just rehashing LLN or Darkthrone, etc. I'm thinking mainly Bael, S.V.E.S.T. and The Ruins of Beverast. No NSBM please.

Teitanblood
Deathspell Omega
Funeral Mist
Craft
Armageddon
Hellsaw
Pest
Urgehal
Peste Noire
TsJuder
Urfaust

Some more modern raw black metal, if you haven't already heard of it. Try checking out bands from the Black Twilight Circle like Volahn and such too.

Thanks! I'm familiar with some of those bands, but will definitely check out the rest. Do you mean the German or the Finnish Pest, by the way?

What you also should avoid are most releases from Self Mutilation Services and most bands and projects from South-America (with possible exceptions being 'Thy Light', 'From the Sunset, Forest and Grief' and '78424325'). As another general rule, you should avoid the projects or bands that involve A. Morbid from the USA as a main member. There might be some exceptions (like the album from Secretly in Pain) but most of the time it's mediocre nonsense.

Noctiferum - Serenades of the Impure, great demo what's very similar to Watain.

When I was little, an older friend of mine gave me a black metal album to listen to. From what I can remember, it must have been a concept album, based on the creation of life, and eventually, the destruction of it. The first track started with lightning and other loud noises, symbolizing the beginning of life and the last track ended with people running and screaming. It may be the exact opposite, but I don't think it matters. So, which album could it be?

Sigh`s "Scenes From Hell" uses a lot of trumpet, played by the hot chick who also growls. Great album, if you ask me. Dunno about trumpet usage on the rest of their discography, though.

You'd probably dig Political Terror's "Bastard Beings" demo. And ideologically it's even the exact opposite of NSBM (it's anarchist), too...here's the whole thing in a video (only 5 songs and most under 2 minutes): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1p9Psxlrdo so yeah, if you dig it you can find a download on the Red And Anarchist Black Metal blog (as well as a lot of other great stuff).

SIGH isn't my cup of tea, nor do I think a female being in the band makes it a big deal to be mentioned

You should check out Quebec's depressive black metal scene; there is a lot of great stuff. The best, in my opinion, is Gris's second album. Hands down my favorite depressive black metal album of all time. Sombres Foret's second album is also amazing. Those two bands did an album together under the moniker Miserer Luminis and that was good too. Sui Caedere's album Threne is really good too. I'm not sure if this would count as depressive black metal or not, but Neige et Noirceur's 2010 album was really good and had a lot of variety, with prominent ambient and traditional Quebecois folk sections.

Here's a sample of Gris:

I'm looking for some bands who are similar to "Transilvanian Hunger"- but good, standout, bands, not any of the 28957238573218975982135 mindless, mediocre clones. Can anyone help me out?

Fraid all the bands are mediocre. After all, that number of mindless, mediocre bands exceeds the number of bands that currently exist so time loops are apparently already involved. Guess you'll have to live in a world where your request is unfulfillable. Of course, you could drop the nonsense about all bands being worthless clones and whole worlds might open up for you... Crazy thought.

Well I don't really care if they're clones (if a band sounds good, I don't care if they're ripping off another band) so much as I don't want them to just be uninteresting...though if it's unfulfillable it's unfulfillable, I guess.

Darkthrone's "A Blaze in the Northern Sky", Burzum's "Det Som Engang Var" and Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" are the logical place to start.

I recommend those three particular albums I mentioned because the are the essential blueprint upon which pretty the "standard" form of black metal expounded. Take Darkthrone's residual 80's influence, Burzum's ambient riffing and Mayhem's aesthetic trappings and you get... Gorgoroth? :P

Emperor and Immortal are in there somewhere, maybe...

I love it too. Try these ones as well:

Deafheaven
Krallice (probably the most intense of them all, and my favourite)
Amesoeurs
Wolves In The Throne Room
Lifelover
Lantlôs
Heretoir
and, probably you already know about them... Agalloch.
