A couple of years ago I went to a (now unfunctunately defunct) record store, and one of the employees played a black metal band for me whose name I can't remember. My efforts to track the band down so far have failed. Can someone help me?

It was a one-man band, and he used mostly acoustic instruments (most shockingly, a banjo), but added distortion, reverb etc. to create a very atmospheric, lo-fi type of sound.

At the time, I had yet to start exploring black metal so I didn't really 'get' it. But from what I remember of how it sounds, I think I would love it now.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

The reviews for "De Totem" mention what you're asking for.

Panopticon? One man band, with a lot of folk type instruments, including banjo.

After searching MA for 'banjo' in lineup, I only managed to find 3 bands: Lugubrum (already mentioned), Stuprum Dei and WRNLRD. None of those are one-man bands though.

It was Dead Raven Choir! In fact, I think the album I listened to was "Cask Strength Black Metal."

Thank you UntilYouReform and thank you to everyone who replied. It was great to discover Panopticon and Lugubrum, and I'm still looking into the other suggested bands.

if you like dead raven check out his side project crunk band

http://www.myspace.com/goatbomb

although ive heard hes is dropping his crunk influence for a more traditional pop- r&b style.
