Seeing as a lot of metal fans have a taste for punk as well I figured I'd make a thread for this. Its probably best to keep all the punk recs here instead of making a ton of different threads for them.

I've lately been on an 80's hardcore kick. Bands like Minor Threat, Poison Idea, Negative Approach, etc. If anyone has any suggestions of fast, angry bands like I listed I'd love to hear them.

EDIT: I added Post-Hardcore. - Metantoine

Not sure if they're aggressive enough for you, but my two favorite 80s hardcore releases are probably the debuts by The Adolescents and Agent Orange.

Adolescents: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guIHLxI3EMw

Agent Orange: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfwYGKGDyT4

I guess Agent Orange really aren't that angry but I've always associated them with the scene despite their surf influences. I love that album a lot though.

As for me, anyone know any street punk bands similar to the German Oxymoron? So damn catchy!

Some essentials:

Dead Kennedys
Minor Threat (all of MacKaye's bands are great though)
Misfits (Danzig era)
Black Flag
Bad Brains

Anyone know any crust like Amebix? Preferably stuff I might get a copy of without paying out of my ass?

Hmm, rather obvious and I assume you already heard of durch Discipline?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81Ac3WkUmbo

Lesser known may be the guys from Hardsell. Their album "Pissed & Broke" is full of shout-out hymns!
Only found one song in german (though they also are dutch if I remember right). The rest of the album is in english:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRr6l21AXBY

Then there's Vanilla Muffins with their so called "Sugar-Oi" style. Maybe a bit too, well, sweet but their songs are damn catchy yet also scratch some kind of "pop"...

I don't know where in the UK you're based, but I just came back from London and I picked up a lot of really good releases there (for a smaller amount).

Instinct Of Survival from Germany are really good - I found their full length 'North of Nowhere...' for 3£!

http://www.myspace.com/stenchcore

a couple of bands from the US - Stormcrow and Sanctum - are great as well!

http://www.myspace.com/sanctum
http://www.myspace.com/stormcrowcrust

Danish Nuclear Death Terror is a real favourite

http://www.myspace.com/nucleardeathterror

And of course britain's own Extinction Of Mankind...

http://www.myspace.com/extinctionofmankind

Btw Thrasher4life - I've already posted some great tips in your Metal Punk thread - check them out.

^ Born Against is also a great HC band from that era as well.

Can anyone give me some good recs for non-racist OI? I don't care if it's left or right wing as long as it doesn't go into NS territory.

for 80's HC check out Necros from Maumee, OH. Though I would avoid their Tangled Up album as they kind of tried to go bad 80's metal on it.

Thanks, I forgot to put in the bands I already know which are Oppressed, Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, and Cock Sparrer. Attak and Blitz seem really promising at the moment. Thanks once again

EDIT:

Loikaemie and Perkele are two newer bands that I have found recently and enjoy a lot. Keep any more bands coming :)

What could you guys recommend for a fan of Dead Kennedys and Agent Orange. Feel free to recommend the obvious bands, I'm not really an expert on punk.

Thanks, grauer_mausling, I liked them all really, and I'm not really familiar with the genre (found Oxymoron on accident, heh) so they were all new names to me.

Also, MortalScum, you might like Gang Green's earlier material. I don't know why I didn't think of it, but they're a lot closer to what you asked for. At the very least, they remind me of Minor Threat a good deal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1Ft72ZZQBY&feature=channel I've heard their later stuff isn't as good, but I dunno. You might want to watch the documentary "American Hardcore" as it talks about a lot of those 80s hardcore bands, including Minor Threat and Negative Approach, I think.

And to King_Hands, give D.I. a shot, I know a few people in Agent Orange were also in that band and they both had kind of a surf vibe to their brand of punk. They're pretty cool, I like their debut. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anTzQX_Oq-A&feature=related

Die Kreuzen's Cows EP gives me a strong Dead Kennedys vibe. Some of the riffs definitely sound like something East Bay Ray would have written, minus the delay/reverb.

Hey, no prob - you're welcome ;-)
Another great dutch band you could like is Badlands. They are not so street/Oi like and have more Rock'n Roll influences but have a try:
http://www.myspace.com/pitbullrocknl

If you don't mind german lyrics, the guys from Böhse Onkelz could also be very much up your alley:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77sVKmIh ... ure=search
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU2BiQ7F ... ure=search
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN2MUCev ... ure=search

Oh, and thinking of shout-a-long groups: Try out THE BONES. Don't know if they sound too soft (well, don't think so actually) but their debut album "Screwed, Blued & Tattooed" is just pure kick-ass awesomeness. Their later albums got more and more influenced by Social Distortion and the like and while still being great, nothing of them comes close to their debut.
Here are two tracks as appetizers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azKTO95Cvr0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EehjHTdoa2k
Not as "hooligan-shout"-ilke but... so what ;-)

I don't know how much their material costs but try Effigy from Japan, really good crust/thrash stuff.

and for more obvious recs you could try Hellbastard and Antisect's "Out from the Void" EP.

I'm a big fan of the Crack Rocksteady guys.

Choking Victim

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTbCotej3Js

Leftover Crack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NGGVrBdJ7U

On the even more metal end of punk, Behind Enemy Lines.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxSl84NO ... ure=search

However, a brief warning on Behind Enemy Lines: It has a former member of Ausrotten in it, and suffers from preaching about politics that should not be the topic of a metal song, let alone be preached about in a metal song.

It's pretty hard to go wrong with old Bad Religion. No Control is probably my favorite album of all time.

yeah - they are kind of famous here in germany. In fact quite controversial:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%B6hse_Onkelz

In the 90s then they reached a bigger audience with their lyrics reflecting their (stupid) hool past and many of their albums climbed to the pole position in the charts, the band filling arenas etc.

I really like many of their songs and Kevin's vocals are just brillant imo. Raw and melodic at the same time. My album recommendations from their really big discography would be "Hier sind die Onkelz", "Heilige Lieder", "Viva Los Tioz" and the great live album "Live in Vienna".

TSOL has a pretty varied discography so you want to make sure to check out the stuff with Jack Grisham singing rather then his brother in law. There was even a point where there was 2 TSOL's one with all the original members and one with like the 3rd bass player doing bad 80s hair metal.

Definitely punk metalheads can dig. The whole album's killer, too, I got it from a £1 bin a while back, probably the best quid I ever spent. I should check out their other stuff, too.

this thread needs some SHITLICKERS.

seriously, this band is pure awesomeness and beats the shit out of most metal in terms of sheer aggression and contempt. re-issue on slap-a-ham.

I only have Dance with Me, which does indeed have Jack Grisham singing. I was familiar with the story of TSOL, and was careful to only get the Jack Grisham stuff. I used to be very into hardcore.

Also, I would like to second the early Bad Religion suggestion, How Could Hell Be Any Worse? is a great album.

Also, one of my favorite bands of that scene is Big Black. Not really hardcore in the traditional sense, but definitely pissed off and punk as fuck. It contains Steve Albini, the guy who engineered High on Fire's Blessed Black Wings (And several billion other albums.)

He's in Shellac now, which is very grungey and nowhere near as intense. If you like that however, you may like the band he formed immediately after Big Black, called Rapeman.

More suggestions/bump

Some Electro Hippies, a weirdo crust punk/metal band that inspired a lot of the early grindcore acts. Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, etc.

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (D.R.I.), one of the earliest crossover bands.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkgCauYQ ... =1&index=4

Wasteoid, who play what I believe is called "power violence." Especially based on their URL.

"Pop Punk" is also good... Not talkin' 'bout Blink 182 or Sum 41 or any similar shit-bands, though. Shit like Screeching Weasel is where it's at!

Capitalist Casualties is decent but I'm not the biggest fan, though I do enjoy their split with Man is the Bastard. Bastard Noise is great but more noise, but highly recommend their 2010 release "A Culture of Monsters." Noise with a little MITB style powerviolence added in.
