Been blasting a lot of melodic crust like Tragedy & Victims.

I'm giving the high recommendation to check out the Brisbane band, Terra Mater.
Excellent melocrust with post-hardcore/metal influences.

I've been enjoying some old school Swedish and Finnish hardcore bands that certain posters have introduced me to like: Kaaos, Crude SS, Asocial and The Bedrovlers, as well as some old school American hardcore bands like Negative FX and old school more punkish grindcore like Patareni and Buka. All good stuff.

Nice one Tomcat!!

I've been listening to Gel's "Violent Closure" alongside Scowl's "How Flowers Grow" recently. 2021 releases, but thought I'd offer them up as recs - both amazing hardcore bands.

Here's live performances from each band back to back at a Sonic Drive-Thru in New Jersey (not kidding - and it's fookin' amazing!)

I don't really get the hype for Scowl to be honest. Have to check out that Gel album soon.

Any other Angry Samoans fans around? Where should I go from here? I'm pretty much a beginner to punk in general.

I like some Angry Samoans. If you like them you might like some of the other early west coast stuff like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear, early Suicidal Tendencies. I also tend to reccomend Poison Idea and Negative Approach as they are two of my favorites.

I like Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies, I'll check out the others. I also like Rudimentary Peni.

Regarding Rudimentary Peni, I suggest you to check out Flux of Pink Indians, Subhumans and Crass I guess. Crass are rather influential but many think the music hasn't held up.

Honestly I think the same can be said for a lot of the early influential bands in anarcho, crust and hardcore punk. Maybe I'm just not getting it, but stuff like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Crass, Amebix, Hellbastard etc etc to me isn't nearly as great as a lot of the later stuff from the mid-late 80s or early 90s. Compared to metal, I think early metal bands hold up way better.

Chalk me up as another who doesn't get Scowl. Matter of fact, most of the modern popular hardcore scene has me bored to tears (see: 95% of Triple B/Daze/Flatspot/whatever). I swear that shit is AI generated. Candy, is probably the most inventive/innovative band I've heard in the last five years. Kinda has me turned more towards punk in the last few years. Also inspired to blatantly copy tomcat, here's a bunch of my favs from this year

Rashomon - "Tokyo via DC," at times both aggressive and melodic
https://ironlungrecords.bandcamp.com/al ... -lungs-180

Mock Execution - very riffy, kinda crusty
https://lavidaesunmus.bandcamp.com/albu ... -execution

Ohyda - dark, distinctive punk
https://lavidaesunmus.bandcamp.com/albu ... katastrofy

Peace Test - fun side to side, two-step type with a slight powerviolence edge at times
https://peacetest.bandcamp.com/album/pry

Yambag - fast as fuck, hope you like blastbeats
https://11pmrecords.bandcamp.com/album/ ... nightmares

Decomp - (actually, there are two Hellshock albums this year) Just saw them live, great time
https://decomp.bandcamp.com/album/condemned-to-earth

Mute - black metal raw Indonesian punk
https://invisibleaudio.bandcamp.com/album/mute-demo-22

Sniffany & the Nits - bizarro hysterical janglepunk
https://sniffanyandthenits.bandcamp.com ... hable-itch

Eteraz - (yet another) catchy d-beat from Olympia
https://eteraz.bandcamp.com/album/villain

Zero Function - random bandcamp find. Hardcore without jock posturing / inflated hype
https://zerofunction.bandcamp.com/album/zero-function

Thing - reverbed out echoic haunted castle punk
https://thing.bandcamp.com/album/time-cost-and-terror

Department of Education - abrasive, one man powerviolence, 30 secs or less guaranteed
https://departmentofeducation.bandcamp. ... -education

Savage Pleasure - punks covering Celtic Frost/Hellhammer (basically)
https://toxicstaterecords.bandcamp.com/ ... he-shadows

Parasite Dreams - black metal/punk, heavy on the black metal
https://parasitedreams-iec.bandcamp.com ... d-too-late

I actually own CDs from all of those bands! Thanks to a family member who is a rabid punk, haha.

You can check out and judge what I own here: https://www.discogs.com/user/Thrashtronaut_1/collection

Thanks to that family member, I own a lot more punk albums than my knowledge of punk would justify.

I'm fairly new to this kind of stuff but I'm listening to Disrupt for the first time and I really dig. What else should I listen to?

Of the ones I've heard, I've really liked Nuclear Death Terror so far but it's all good.

I've been getting nostalgic and playing stuff I listened to more often 20 years ago. For the most part Nine Shocks Terror. But also E.T.A. and DS-13.

Unscrew My Head from New York's Ekulu has been on constant rotation for me lately. Finally got me to stop listening to the latest Mindforce for a while. Total Best Wishes/Born to Expire worship so it's right up my alley. Super catchy/melodic shit that'll get you moving. Bands like this are able to tap into what made those late 80s HC/NYHC albums so good instead of just making mindless speed for the sake of speed "Crossover". They put actual thought into the song structures and catchy vocal lines that keeps me coming back for more. Now that I've overhyped them have a listen.

Can anyone rec anything like early Amebix? Winter is one of my favourite songs and I'd love more in that vein.

Musical differences aside, I think Skaven nails the same atmosphere of gloom, perhaps that’ll scratch your itch. Their entire discography consists of eight songs, so just pick and give it a listen.

They're not really scratching the itch unfortunately but I see where you're coming from with recommending it. Thanks for taking a shot at it.

I might be a little off but Extinction of Mankind, Misery, Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct fit right in with Amebix.

To that list I would add:
After the Bombs
Hellbastard (especially their early albums)
State of Fear
Sacrilege
Antisect - In Darkness There is No Choice
Anti-Cimex (their 80s stuff)
Discharge (up until 1981)
Effigy
Fatum
Filth of Mankind
Instinct of Survival
Ohyda

Nightfeeder from Seattle absolutely rip!! They may have already been mentioned here before, but thought I would post about them. These guys have been around in various bands for many years (Disrupt, State Of Fear, Deathraid, Consume, Decrepit) and are top notch d-beat hardcore imho.

any recommendations for bands playing like Capitalist Casualties? That early DxRxIx thrash influence with hardcore roots? One of my all-time favorite bands. While it's clear to me how great they were at what they did, I also take them for granted and didn't bother looking for bands with their mix in mind. I'd be interested in any recommendations post 2000. I know of most stuff from the 90s. The only band that I can think of right in that wheelhouse is Slight Slappers. There's thrashy hardcore, but how many write songs like CxCx did, with an amazing drummer with great drum sound, with a sharp guitarist, two vocalists that played off each other that well, and a bass player who is as perfect as the rest? I'm hoping someone has a lead on a hidden gem.

Swordwielder just released an EP and it's still dramatic Stenchcore like so few play.

I like this. I like it a lot. I've always thought the term stenchcore was a bit shit tho.

Hellnation and (early) Brody's Militia come to mind. I also remember a band called Widespread Bloodshed being in the same vein.
