Hailz all you beardy battle weary brothers of the axe.sword.hammer!!!

Looking for the easy way out here to discover perhaps that which I do not already know of. I want Viking/Folk metal, but nothing of the Finntroll ilk and it's like of all too happy sappy foolishness. I like black metal as a prime factor. Yet I do not really need that in this request, just the serious approach to it would probably be beneficial in it's delivery to make it sincere ?

Yea, so the bands I have and already groove to are Nocturnal Mortum, Temnozor, Askival, Darkestrah, Skyforger. Yea, I think most of the easier acts to find I have already found so to speak. Looking for those which fall under the radar.

Clean vox are good. Lots of folk instruments is good, black metal influenced is good, the less cheese though, better chance I will like it... well black metal cheese aside anyways. Only need 2 campy happy sappy bands and 2 is enough.

Thanks.

Kamaedzitca and Piarevaracien- both pagan metal with some kind of "other" approach to the genre.
At least to me they sound somehow special and are very outstanding

Arkona - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFRRKs-Xcfw
Pagan Reign - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Og07RN8jPM

Try looking up pagan metal on various sites. Other bands I think you might like are Falkenbach, Gernotshagen, heidevolk, alkonost, arafel

Anyone with magazine exposure or that gets consistent threads made about them would be on that list. Someone mentioned ULVER, cannot get more well known than that. Great album, yet also many bands I never heard of were already mentioned too, many thanks for that guys.

Thank you for the extensive list though, definately a great start for me and probably more than enough great material there for many weeks.

These are basically underground favorites so you might have heard of them. On the off chance you haven't they are outstanding bands.

Winterfylleth - At times, fairly coarse black metal complete with buzzsaw guitars mixed with acoustic guitar and english chants. Gives a distinctly foresty atmosphere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyC84lQQ ... re=related

Forefather - Somewhat like Winterfylleth, a little less black metal based with more catchy, folky riffs and clean vocals. They sometimes use choruses as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_twzj4ZAtrA

Manegarm - Viking/Black metal with unique clean vocals, like a better more focused version of those used by Einherjer along with extensive use of the violin (it even gets solos!) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qi55brVbnQ

Wodensthrone - Somber, atmospheric black metal with subtle keyboard backing in the vein of Askival: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qi55brVbnQ

Sorgsvart - Black/folk along the lines of isengard, but with a much heavier usage of scandinavian folk instruments and complex song structures. They might be a bit too bouncy for you though:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF6FAa2gmKQ

Myrkgrav - Heavily blackened folk using a combination of clean and chanted vocals; highly recommended if you like Windir: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOY-2-PA ... re=related

Waylander - celtic black metal that uses guitars in conjunction with the tin whistle:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpPMmhmmMdk

yepp, close thread ;-) best band of the genre! Esp. their latest three albums are the most passionate, earnest
and not-silly music you can get in the whole folk-metal genre...

Månegarm and Moonsorrow come to mind. Kampfar might also be your thing, although you probably know them already. Someone mentioned Einherjer too, they're pretty cool. Also check out Falkenbach, especially the album Heralding the Fireblade. Really good german folk metal with clean vocals. Older releases also feature more black metal influence.

I feel like Gallowbraid and Oakhelm are not a fair comparison. To me Gallowbraid have a "warmer" vibe, which I love by the way, while Oakhelm are darker and heavier. I LOVE Oakhelm as well, their new album Echtra is phenomenal. I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment and give another rec for them. I think they are one of the more solid USBM bands out there

Well, this thread's already a pretty good list, but I'll throw Volupsaa into the ring. While they're not folk metal, I've always found Obtest to have some folk influenced moments too. They're an awesome band to namedrop anyway, even if they don't accurately fit the criteria.

Get Asmegin's first album. Good viking folk/death metal. Lots of clean vocals and folky riffs. Here's one fairly epic song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1ajecBmn-M . Most of the other songs are more death metal influenced, but just as good.

The new Oakhelm is available through Forest Moon. It may still be listed as a preorder, but mine already arrived. It is really good. I think it kinda flew under the radar becasue there was no official release date, it just came out once it was pressed and packaged.

Album preview: http://www.metalsucks.net/2011/01/11/al ... lm-echtra/

Forest Moon link: http://forestmoonproducts.bigcartel.com/

Also, I recently was introduced to this band Ildra http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Ildra/28826
Some really solid heathen metal that reminds me of Winterfylleth and the like

This came to me last night, but I had already turned my computer off, so I had hoped I would remember what I wanted to say today, and it appears I have more or less.
I have given some thought as to how I wanted to actually have my initial request sound. At first I was rather unclear although people still gave me some great material to check out (thanks).

But what I would like to know is something along these lines. Something in the folk/viking metal realm that uses more or less a choir type voice (Therion or say the singing parts from something like the Conan The Barbarian soundtrack) ...so folk elements yet more in a symphonic manner with vast choirs like all the heavens were torn asunder and opened and all these viking gods or goddess' were forced to sing like some massive epic battle for humanity were to be fought, Ragnarok supreme unleashed !!! haha

What I find with most of the usual suspects in viking/folk metal is a natural clean voice that is not really GODLIKE or EPIC, like how I would describe some really deep voice. Say like if Boss from ROOT were to tackle Folk/Viking metal or the guy from Moonspell, or like some of the ways Therion have had the vox done.

I hope I am making some manner of sense ? I feel like I am babbling now. haha.

Like say if a magic +4 wand of alteration were to be waved on Dimmu Borgir/Therion/Cradle of Filth and changed/merged them all into one band that was all of a sudden a evil symphonic folk/viking metal band with a good budget and a orchestra to make the epic parts of glorious battle, but the album maintained a grim sombre tone and was not about all happy sappy anthems of metal comradre' ,instead a bleak and terrible woe of EPIC production and dark notes though. haha

Anything ?

Butterfly Temple or Tverd? (Butterfly Temple do a cover of Moonspell's "Werewolf Masquerade")

or, there's a couple songs on the recent Thyrfing album you might like (it's not not their usual vocals, just choral style accompaniment)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gBQrldzusU#at=400
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUreZwGqBr8#at=182

Bathory, of course, always do the whole choral backing thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXxSXyplmRI#at=142

yea, usually it's a sort of war-cry passionate yell when you get deep clean vocals in pagan metal.

one of the guys from Balkandji has quite an intriguing deep voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzL-M39Y3j8#at=25

or, of course, there's Haggard, which you probably already know
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSFEv9eaoh4#at=30

Svartsot has probably the best Death Metal vocals in the Folk genre, but I dunno if it's quite what you're after, though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj9VmXYGBTI#at=32

or, the entire album by this band (they only made one -- the vocalist is from the Gothic Metal band Nattvindens Gråt)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYUNL2mFqYs#at=244

another one that should go without saying (one of the most famous voices in Folk Metal)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LeY5uFi-n0#at=73

I'd be embarassed to admit at my age if I did not know or was not familiar with Bathory and called myself a metalhead. hehe

That Balkandji band video. Is that a spoof vid or is that the actual band playing that song ? haha Too hippy weird for me to appreaciate. It kinda was too goofy. The song was not really that bad though I guess.

I never heard of Haggard before, but that is very close I think to what I was tyring to find maybe, I like it anyways. Going to check them out more for sure.

well, I had heard of Bathory but it was only a few years later I appreciated Hammerheart etc. because people had recommended me the earlier albums and I didn't like that early BM sound -- I had no idea he did the whole Pagan vocal thing later in his career--I never expected those epic songs he was later known for.

:) I'm the one who wrote the positive review of Furthest Shore on their MetalArchives page -- love them, wish I knew anything else that sounded like that album!

one more suggestion, because I see these guys as being similar to Haggard:

Hammerheart is actually probably like one of my favourite albums, listened to that waaaaay too many times. One Rode to Asa Bay is an epic song of massive porportions to me. A great album. The best album by Bathory ever in my opinion, even the highly revered black metal albums he did, I hold Hammerheart highest of them all.

Whoa, the VIRGIN BLACK is epic dark stuff.

This song Domine on the album Mezzo Forte, so very awesome. Now this I really like. Guess it is not folk or viking at all though like what I was asking for haha

Too bad someone did not do something folkish and viking like this, more like a epic movie soundtrack than any mere metal genre.
