Specifics would definitely be better. As for Merzbrow, I assume everyone knows him but is there a specific release that's better to begin with?

Harsher noise recs:

K2: metal dysplasia, the rust
Thirdorgan: mechanical violator
Haters: in the shade of fire
New Blockaders: simphonie in X major
Aube: flush, flare, metal on metal (not nearly as harsh as other stuff from Japan btw)
Massonna: Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé
Merzbow: [earlier] flesh metal orgasm, electric fan, batztoutai, [later] pulse demon, oersted, 1930 (i don't like the 2000s digital stuff, sorry)
Incapacitants: asset without liability, as loud as possible
CCCC: early works box
Government Alpha: harbinger sound boxset
Lefthandeddecision: instinct and emotion
Herz Aus GROSS: 4 tape boxset on RRR
Dead Body Love: lo fi power, maximum dose
Pain Jerk: trashware
Solmania: Psycledelic, trembling tongues
Hijokaidan: romance
Monde Bruits: selected noise works

Other stuff too but all that should keep you busy for awhile...not much 2000s noise stuff because a lot of it is bad/boring rehash IMHO.

EDIT: I CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT CONTROLLED BLEEDING! there is a lot of good noise stuff throughout there discog but they messed around with a lot of different styles. "Knees and Bones" or the 4CD box "Gibbering Canker-Opera Slaves" are good places to start. Of the later stuff they did, I highly recommend "The Drowning" if you like your harsh noise mixed with some rougher sounding old school industrial ambient type stuff.

Any music projects similar to Aghast/Sui Generis Umbra? I am looking for insane and gloomy black ritual ambient - preferably with female vocals.

Something similar to this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGJsccZCCuA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGhEOARrJxQ

Any suggestions?

Anybody know of any dreamy-spacey electronica a-la Ulrich Schnauss? Thick rich synths, preferably instrumental, and I'd like some sort of soft beat to lock it all down if possible. Any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with Ulrich...isn't that one of those things that came out in the wake of Boards of Canada? Anyway, IMHO a lot of the best melodic/ambient influenced chill-out type techno was released in the early to mid 90s. Maybe you're already familiar with a lot of that stuff, but I can make a few recs if you want.

I'm looking for ambient (presumably dark ambient) in the vein of Lurker of Chalice's non-black metal passages. Use of instruments besides synth desirable, but the most important element is a thoroughly dark, nightmarish atmosphere. I'm completely new to the style, so feel free to recommend even the most obvious ones.

I'm really happy with this thread! I'm familiar with most of the recommendations I read here, nevertheless I'm sure that lots of unknown stuff will follow. I'm working on a new demo now. Somewhere between glitch/idm/sound collage stuff. I'll post some of it here when finished.

My recommendations for now:

To people who enjoy glitch, definately know Alva Noto (if not, for shame!). He's been teaming up with Ryuichi Sakamoto of Yellow Magic Orchestra and David Sylvian fame, among many other projects. The result is piano ridden, sound collage-glitch, which is nothing short of amazing. I got the chance to see them performing live in a Church here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRonFRE7cs8&feature=related

Ben Frost, artist in diverse types of art, including music, film and theatre, excels in fusing elements of post-rock, ambient and drone into one big, atmospheric cloud of intriguing guitar bliss.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJI-lufs7pU

For the people who prefer themselves some harsher-themed tunes:

Deathpile is for the unclean spirits! If you enjoy Brighter Death Now, Haus Arafna, Insitutes and the likes, make sure to check this out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJI-lufs7pU

There's little know about Last Few Days, except for the fact that the're somehow related to Laibach and that they performed with them back in the days. In their existance, they avoided releasing records and performing on a regularly basis, so the mystery around the band is not surprising. Usage of megaphones, broken bottles, feedback worship and violins result into this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz1QBmEuMso

I hope I did at least someone a favor!

Anyone know any post-punk/bm more on the post-punk side? Kinda like Aves or Heretoir, with more Joy Division.

Circle of Ouroborus have quite a few releases that should fit in that realm. Check out Eleven Fingers and The Lost Entrance of the Just.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr08XAvAXhc

Amesoeurs. I really prefer their first ep as opposed to the LP, but it's less post-punky.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF_oNPdr2ng

A big stretch with these two

Maybe forgotten woods as they were one of the first bm bands to incorperate Post-punk. You're better off listening to the whole album rather than one song.

Lifelover's as close as you could get to "poppy" black metal that isn't trite or shitty. Check it out. "pulver" might be your best bet.

I'd love to find more like Ben Frost, especially stuff like By the Throat. Know anything?

This clip is beyond words. So phenomenal and powerful and the instrumentation is great. Please anyhting like this. Post-rock climaxes, avantgard instrumentation, noisy ambiance, guitar effects.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Im really digging Circle of Ouroboros. They kind I remind me of a more musical version of Throbbing Gristle. I definately prefer Amesouers demo over the album.

This is an insane request I think, but I still need to know if it's been done before
"Epic Noise", I'm really digging Destroyer 666's "Flight of the Pheonix" as well as Panopticon's stuff, also Amon Amarth and Ensiferium to some extent and most recently The Skyrim official soundtrack, most notably http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsnRQJxanVM
But I want to hear this level of epic-ness in (preferably) harsh noise or some type of dirge-y industrial/drone
maybe akin to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WShknpNpHbY (albeit slower and harsher)

I don't really understand what you're looking for, but try this (especially track 4)

Phragments - The Burning World (2007)

What sort of ambient are you referring to? Ambient is such a vague, nebulous term that takes in a variety of styles; synthy/New Age type music, field recordings, Dark Ambient, Ambient techno, etc. It might help us if you consider this. Also, if you want metal mixed with ambient, what sorts of metal do you like?

For somebody that didn't quite get what I was getting at, you hit the nail on the head, this whole album is almost exactly what I was looking for!
many thanks, are there anymore artist that do this sort of thing?

P.S. to cut down the confusion for anyone else, how exactly would you word the request?
Not sure if I'm using "epic" right, but it's just how I've always used it.

Ehh, bit hard to describe here. I like a couple of tracks from Ulver's Shadows of the Sun and some later Fates Warning stuff seems quite ambient-ish (such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfRwrIp9g4o or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSaG6I6I ... re=related) unless I have quite a wrong idea of what ambient actually is.

ahah glad you liked it!
this is martial industrial with a touch of noise/rhythmic noise; martial industrial is often epic/orchestral but "clean", while noise/rhythmic noise is "noisy"/electronic but not really epic....so this is not so common (at least as far as I know), but if you want something like that I think you should look for martial industrial

you can also try this (more neoclassical):
Der Blaue Reiter - Le Paradise Funèbre, L'Envers Du Tristesse (2006)

I assume you're aware of Godflesh's "Us and Them" album?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFRZvuLxv7g

Another decent track, though a bit cheesier in my opinion is Soundisciples "Jesus Biting Nails":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlgCpQn_qts

I used to do the odd industrial/metal DJ set round the turn of the millennium, and I'd frequently play these and Cubanate, plus some harder DnB tracks like Mu-Ziq's "Approaching Menace" and Scanner's "Lithia Water".

im a lifer as far as godflesh goes, from first till last

surprising that you brought up that sound disciples song...i heard it on a kerrang or metal hammer cover cd like 10,000 years ago and it was one of my instant favourites

"my god its true, oh my god its true" "i feel like...i feel like...jesus biting nails" ! thats gonna be stuck in my head now for a while ...thanks

alos know mu-ziq but never thought of them as hard or dark
scanner i will check out

any other suggestions...? something like if later day pitchshifter opted to do more cutting edge innovative drum and bass with more crazy rock/punk instead of the rather bland direction they headed into

my favourite in this style is definitely cubanate's interference

Ha ha, I heard that Soundisciples track on a MH cover cd too! Regarding Mu-Ziq and Scanner, only the tracks I mentioned are hard DnB. The rest of their stuff is electronica/IDM.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B9zQCrxVj0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P651SkonWc

There's always Nightbreed "Pack of Wolves", I heard it years ago on John Peel's show and it blew me away:

A couple more possible suggestions. A surprisingly hard track by Goldie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut0mPeCRa4g

And possibly The Chaos Engine. The dance element isn't quite DnB, but close enough:

here's something i discovered from zardonic's net label ... dont be fooled by the labelling...it definitely is 90 % dark evil sounding hard d n b...just wish there were guitars in there and at least some vocals

Is there any ambient that's made of industrial drones? Not industrial like the music, but like field recordings of machines or factories or something.

Looking for stuff that resembles Witch House. Not really sure about the hip-hop connections the tag has, but I really like the dense melodic songs that rely on keys and melody. Not a big fan of Salem's other work besides this song, but I do like White Ring's "Black Earth That Made me." Other genres are fine, not really stuck to the Witch House moniker.

Enjoying it! A bit more laid back, but still cool. Thanks.

Yeah, Salem's really the other witch house band I've found that has that really creepy, foreboding stuff. Most witch house reminds me of chillwave on sizzurp. I will also recommend Lake Radio's Planet Earth About to be Recycled, Balam Acab's See Birds, and my favorite witch house release, ^'s Wire Migraine. Interestingly enough, the lead singer from the Deftones has a witch house project. Haven't heard it yet though.

It seems like one of the big criticisms of Alcest is that they simply aren't as good as their contemporaries, which their fans assumedly haven't been exposed to. So what can you guys give me in the way of melancholy Shoegaze-y stuff? Doesn't need to be metal, but I don't want anything too happy, at least not without some contrasting sadness.

And while I'm here, does anyone know of anything remotely close to Ulver's Shadows of the Sun? Emotionally complex, reserved, heavily atmospheric, awesome, etc.

Not a fan.

Really digging all of Holy Other's work, reminds me a bit of Burial.

Not enjoying ^ all that much... can't put my finger on it, too much vocals (especially male) amongst other things the kinda pop/goth instrumentation/song structure. and Lake Radio's just, meh.
