Check these guys out if you like post/ambient stuff. Also sometimes they play some Meshuggah-esque guitar riffs. Their albums are free to download off their site. I've only listened to one album, their latest one: Lucid; Dreamscape; Remedy; Pretty good!

http://www.shadowcastsun.com/

They are good at being background music or foreground music which I like.

Here's one my favourites off that album:

I'm looking for something with psychedelic undertones that feature warm fuzzy drones. Something good to mellow out to in summer.

Thanks man, thats awesome. I've heard the band's name thrown around before, but never got around to checking them out.

Also, that Shadowcast Sun song was pretty cool.

One of my favourite shoegaze bands is lovesliescrushing. Can anyone recomend me anything similar to them? (or any good shoegaze of any sort?)

I wouldn't exactly call it shoegaze, but Jefre Cantu-Ledesma has the same general idea as loveliescrushing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCI8exp5JHc

Can't go without mentioning My Bloody Valentine. Loveless is pretty much the pinnacle of the shoegaze genre. You can listen to the whole album here:

Other bands you might want to look into are Flying Saucer Attack, The Daysleepers and Nadja.

You may want to try Seefeel, an early 90s band who were a crossover of ambient/electronica and shoegaze. Their first album "Quique" is gorgeous, full of guitar-generated drones, loops and textures. Later material ventured into more abstract Autechre territory.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtT5Jki24VE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opqthx8Bsd4 (my favourite)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TocGjX4SpGo

Make sure you listen with either headphones or decent speakers, otherwise the gorgeous basslines get lost.

@Balbulus I'm listening to the one you marked as your favourite right now. Not really what I was looking for, but holy shit dude, this is amazing. I love the eastern vibe.

Yeah, I was blown away when I first heard it on the John Peel show all those years ago. Glad you liked it, even if it wasn't what you were after.

Just finished listening to this. Really grabbed my attention.
Do you know of anything similar but with a more fuzzy Sludge / Stoner Metal feel?

Not really as I'm a bit out of my natural element here, not a big connoisseur of psychedelic stuff. That band/album was actually given to me as a recommendation from a friend and I thought I'd share it as I actually liked it, which in the end should make it good enough for others as well! :p

Could someone rec me some shoegaze/rock in the vein of Alison's Halo? Pure shoegaze is okay too, but female vocals are kind of a must; occasional male vocals are okay. Bonus points for something with prominent bass. Thanks!

haha heard of everything reccomended there, all of it good. I'm quiet a big shoegaze fan so not surprised.

^ IIRC Alison's halo are fairly similar to Catherine Wheel. Don't quote me on that, I'm not too big on either of them

I got 2 requests:

Post-rock with full-time cello-leading (not just a guest). It does need to be cleary post-rock (with guitars, drums), not just modern classical.

Post-rock with full-time piano-leading. It does need to be cleary post-rock (with guitars, drums), not just modern classical (as Ólafur Arnalds).

For cello, The Pirate Ship Quintet: "The cellist is a full time principle member of one of Britain’s most commended symphony orchestras as well as having been part of the famous London Symphony Orchestra." (Last.fm)

For piano, Not to Reason Why: "Not To Reason Why lures their audience into a relaxed malaise with pleasant piano riffs and encapsulates their souls with heavy rhythmic articulation and soaring guitar lines with some of the most intense post-rock stylings this side of Japan." (Last.fm)

I'll add more if they come to me.

Malory's Not Here, Not Now? The male vocals are probably a bit too prominent. It's very Slowdive-esque.

It isn't that similar to Alison's Halo but have you ever listened to Bleach? Female vocals, occasional male vocals and prominent bass.

Orange are in a similar boat, although I don't recall them featuring any male vocals.

Hey fellas, can someone recommend me some emotional but aggressive post-black/shoegaze? I wish I could say more but I'm not terribly familiar with the genre. As a reference, I'm in love with this song by Dopamine and pretty much anything with similar sound will surely please my ears:

Try Mammal by Altar of Plagues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7PFnIlmCH8
You may also want to take a look at the recommendations from this thread. I'm new to the stuff too and am looking for something similar. Don't hesitate to share if you stumble across something good!

Thanks, that's actually really good. As for that thread, I was looking through it a few days ago (which I had completely forgotten about when I posted my request, oops) and I'm already pretty familiar with most of the Cascadian black metal bands mentioned in there, as well as the work of Neige. As for anything I've stumbled upon, there is this although much of the rest of that album, from what I've heard, bores me a bit with soft instrumentals.

While we are on the topic of ambient, I have a question for any mods, or anyone who knows the answer: Why was Dark Ages accepted onto this website? From what I understand, ambient artists can go on here as long as the artist did a metal album before their ambient ones. And from what I can tell, Dark Ages' debut sounds like pure ambient to me. Is there enough metal elements in it that I'm just not hearing, or what's the deal?

Thank you in advance.

Because Dark Ages was a side project of Roman Saenko from Hate Forest/Drudkh. Side projects by metal bands are usually allowed.

I'm kind of bummed out that The Angelic Process never released their lyrics. But as is, I can just imagine he's screaming about something of unimagimable sorrow and beauty.

I'm looking for some ambient music that sounds like the beginning of Portishead's "Roads" in style and atmosphere.

I've become interested lately in traditional Chinese and Japanese Folk. Something that has a strong focus on Ambient and that sort of thing would be wonderful. Regional themed Ambient on cultures other than Western European and Scandinavian would be cool too.

Are you familiar with Trial Of The Bow? It was an ethno-ambient side-project of the guys from Disembowelment. No Chinese or Japanese influences unfortunately, but plenty of middle-eastern atmospheres.

I know it is not the correct place for this band but have you ever listened to Tengger Cavalry Iam? Quite a unique band. They incorperate Mongolian throat singing, horse-head fiddles etc into thier music and it all sounds great and adds to the 'ancient China' atmosphere. As far as this thread goes check out thier 'Cavalry Folk' 2cd album. The first disc is more black metal based but the second disc is acoustic/fiddle based which can create a nice background ambience if you catch my drift, the throat singing really adds a different dimension on both disks and makes it sound that bit more errie in places. A great release in my opinon, I hope you enjoy.

I've given this some thought, and I have a nagging feeling that I know something that sounds like it, but I can't put my finger on it. The closest I can come up with at the moment is Rothko, an ambient/post-rock trio that created soundscapes with bass guitars. Whilst it's obviously fairly different, it has a certain similarity, with a subtle open feeling:

Is there music style e.g (close to) ambient? Think of stuff like Fates Warning's self titled album or Ulver's Shadows of the Sun.
