Can anybody recommend me a (very) good alternative metal band(s) that are not nu-metal or mallcore? Or at least good alternative music (alternative rock, alt. metal, alt. hip-hop, industrial rock, etc. that have relations with alt. rock) band(s)?

So... I was recommended Blackfilm a while back, but in the midst of everything I was recced here (which was too damn much :p) it got a bit lost in translation. I've slowly come to figure out it isn't exactly what I wanted though. "Sonar" and "Midnight To 4AM" are brilliant songs, it's just that they're not representative of the rest of the album. It's more dark ambient mood than steady downtempo beat, if you guys follow my drift. Anyway, I did check the collaboration with Eraldo Bernocchi and wow, just wow! Steady groovy beats with just enough progression as to not get stale together with all the dark moody stuff from Blackfilm, only cranked up to 11. Very good stuff and much better than Blackfilm itself, which is curious.

Just wanted to let a small note that Along The Corridors is a great album, and funnily enough it sometimes even remembers me of Massive Attack's 100th Window.

Yeah.. I recced Blackfilm a while back. You're right that it is not exactly downbeat. I didn't know he had a collaboration with Eraldo Bernocchi. Thanks for the awesome rec! Currently I don't think I'll rate it higher then Blackfilm. But time will tell..

You're welcome. And thanks, I guess. ;)

It's not necessarily better as much as it is better to me, you know?! It's so much more in line with what I was searching for than most of the stuff I was recommended. That mechanical urban feeling that I get from 100th Window, but with a bigger emphasis on the beat. I was just gazing at the screen and thinking "EUREKA!!!". :D

Try Locrian, Khlyst, Blue Sabbath Black Cheer for starters.

Maybe give Ophir a try. It ticks all those boxes, save for the vocals (there are none). To quote a review I wrote about them: "...long droning ritualistic dirges constructed with layers of guitar lines drenched in reverb and excessive distortion, sounding like cascades of golden poisonous honey burning into your ears... once your mind locks into the artistic world they offer, variation and detail start to emerge from the apparent cacophony. Some the tracks are achingly beautiful, others chaotically dissonant."

I'd like to hear more poppy psychedelic shoegaze with dual male/female vocals - the more like LSD and the Search for God, the better.

Never bothered with this band simply because of their enormous discography. Where to start? What's the most melodic/atmospheric/least harsh release?

This, however.

Much more like it! Really dig it. Reminds me a bit of Murmuüre

Listening to Spikenard and dig it (although I wish it developed a bit quicker). Thanks, you've made my weekend!

Glad to finally find someone else who likes them! All three releases essentially follow the same formula, though I find Nutmeg a bit more dissonant and challenging than the other two. I wish I could find out more about the band/project; I tried contacting them through the Bandcamp page, but to no avail.

Now i'm getting greedy. Anything that's a bit more involved? (i.e. not 25+ of the same melody/sounds).

Check out Flood District!

I just started that because I was looking for pretty similar (though somewhat electronic as well) stuff and not finding much.

I'm looking for drone. Not drone doom, non-metal drone. And not dreamy and uplifting stuff, I want it dark, bleak and oppressive. Like Ungl'unl'rrlh'chchch.

I've been digging Ulwhednar lately. In fact I dug it so much that I ordered the cassette, which is rare for me:

Having now listened to Ungl'unl'rrlh'chchch, I think my rec may be more dark ambient than what you're looking for. "Pangæa" by Shifts may be more up your street if you can track down a copy, though possibly not as oppressive as you'd like.

And thanks for introducing me to Ungl'unl'rrlh'chchch - great stuff. Plus I'm a sucker for unpronouncable names.

This is a curious little request, not worth making a new thread for, so I thought I'd stick it in here.

I'm looking for ambient music that features prominent use of synthesized Shakuhachi flutes like the outro to Tiamat's "Undressed" (last track on the "Clouds" album). It's a sound that is generally considered slightly "cheesy", and was used a lot in the New Age/meditation music that boomed in the 80s, but I can't find any examples of that at the moment. Another famous use is Enigma, but I'm really looking for something without the dance element.

Anyone recommend anything?

Ha, you remembered me about the existence of those dreadful "pan pipes" albums! They spread like the plague around here, more or less a decade ago. Those were hard times...

Ha ha, yes, they were everywhere weren't they! That's even cheesier than what I'm looking for - even I have limits... :-)

I am looking for some type of chill, atmospheric, downbeat, ambient, electronics with a slight nocturnal feel along the line of Pan American's first two albums (although they are quite different):

Anything fitting would be apprectiated

What's the darkest, meanest dubstep you people know? YouTube videos please, I don't want to download it and have it show up on my last.fm. ;)

I'm looking for older or older sounding spacey electronic ambient that sounds like Tangerine Dream's Alpha Centauri and Zeit and Klaus Schulze's Irrlicht.

Here's what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOYddvUeBs4

Bonus points if it has organ.

Any artists out there similar to Chelsea Wolfe? Dark, melancholic, and dreamy sounding folk/dark rock type stuff?
Songs like this are what make me really love her music. I have yet to find anything out there like this.. (also really glad she appears on the new Russian Circles album!)

I don't think you're going to find much that sounds like her, unfortunately. She's brilliant, especially on Pain is Beauty.

Have you ever listened to Giles Corey? Pretty much exactly as you described, "dark, melancholic and dreamy sounding folk". Apologies for the shitty YouTube quality. ;)

^^ Oh man, that takes me back; I went through a HUGE phase of electronica and abstract post-rock back in the late 90s/early 00s, and that was one of the artists I was into. That was always my favourite song of theirs, after hearing it on the Peel show.

Which particular elements do you like? If you're after the music rather than the vocal side of things, check out the more delicate child-like end of the Electronica spectrum (I refuse to call it IDM).

Acts like E*Vax

http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Foiled/5328797

Fridge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNylVG5sL_k

Some of the early Melodium stuff
http://melodium.bandcamp.com/track/silica
http://melodium.bandcamp.com/track/hiko

Isan maybe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBSsZGOqCPY

For stuff with vocals, maybe Broadcast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4ahXhBs ... 5E84348EBD

or maybe Björk's "Vespertine" album?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHz1j1RVm6M

If the first recs were of interest let me know, as I can probably dredge up a few more.

Yeah, I agree, I always preferred the instrumental acts. I can give you some more recs if you like, some of which may be closer to the Aphex/Autechre end of the spectrum.

I assume you are familiar with Boards of Canada?

Maybe it's just the "city" in the name, but I always get a somewhat similar feel from Future Sound Of London's "Dead Cities" album, which is more ambient/techno than trip-hop. Take a listen to some of these:

Maybe also their "ISDN" album too:
