I'm looking for death or black metal bands with an actual operatic singer as the main vocalist. I'm not looking for any symphonic death/black, so please no quadruple zillion violins and trumpets please. I would like the death/black metal to be as pure as possible, but I don't mind a little dabbling into other genres.

Thanks! :-D

can't think of any death or black.. hmm

I really like Powerwolf, especially the vocals, so you should check them out if you haven't :D

Probably not what you're looking for, but there's the folk metal band Tverd, which has a trained opera singer as lead vocalist (and they also have a female vocalist who sings in a more folk style and someone who does the infrequent harsh vocals). They're rooted in black metal because the band emerged from the ashes of Pagan Reign.

I would be very surprised indeed if this exists, but if it does, I'd sure like to hear it.

True Symphonic Rockestra had a couple opera guys and the Dream Theater guy...but, yea, it's not Extreme Metal.

I'm fairly certain that former vocalist of Lumsk, Stine-Mari Langstrand, (she was on "Troll" and "Det Vilde Kor") is a trained opera singer as well, but I don't know what kind of metal to call Lumsk other than folk metal. Alkonost's Alena Pelevina (who left the band earlier this year) also seems to have some operatic training. Alkonost started as a black metal band, but I'm not sure what to call them now other than gothic/doom/folk metal of some sort.

That sounded interesting, but as you already know, not exactly what I'm looking for. And yes, Splyu, I also would be very suprised if this actually exists. It just sort of popped into my mind: "hey THAT would be pretty damn cool!" The closest band I could think of myself was Urfaust.

One can dream, one can dream..... I appreciate the recs, though. :-D

I already know of Isengard, good band, thanks for the rec. Grimm on the other hand, is new to me, and me likey. Virgin black was kinda cool to, but a little bit to doomy and not deathy enough. Smalley, I never was a fan of Iced Earth, but thanks for the rec anyway. :)

So far pretty cool recs, guys.

You could try the first album augury made: Concealed
It features female operatic vocals on several tracks. Also the music is nicely done progressive death metal.

Not opera but there was some death metal band who used only clean vocals. Can't remember name, I think it was from Sweden, with album in 2011 (?), it was gay as fuck though.

ICS Vortex sounds pretty operatic whenever he sings clean, although he doesn't have classical training (I guess.)

Mystifier don't have an actual opera singer, but they have moments on The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here where they go between gutturals, operatic vocals, and high pitched growls. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg2Gpfm1Jaw

Angelus Morits has an Opera singer. It pretty Melodic, but it is one of the only Death/Black metal bands I know with a Male Opera singer. The only thing is that he isn't a main vocalist, just a session vocalist.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWBGQpiAfqI

I've only heard one song so Idk how much the opera singer is in the ablum

I know it's been recommended, but that was only one song. Virgin Black, vocalist is a trained opera singer. Their albums tend to be quite different. They don't really dip into the black metal sound much, the majority of the stuff is death metal based on symphonic metal. The albums:

Sombre Romantic:

Elegant... and Dying (no death vocals, gothic/symphonic style):

Requiem - Mezzo Forte:

Requiem – Fortissimo (no clean vocals - death/doom style):
