Anybody got some recommendations for depressive death/doom?
Was thinking like this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJUGK3Em5R4 but possibly with more distant/reverb vocals, can also be somewhat atmospheric or influenced by black metal as long as it stays slow and gloomy.

All other Ophis' albums are worth it, and even better than this latest one, I'd say, especially the first two full-lengths.
Treurwilg sound rather strickingly like a sludgier Ophis.
Aporya is a straighter death doom band with one album under the sleeve that shows some Ophis-like darkly aggressive edges.

But if you searching really dark stuff, influenced by BM, I recommend rather Ataraxie/Funeralium. Funeralium sounds even better than their sister-project imo.

There's a band called Aphotic that's like a less romantic early Katatonia.

A new project, hard to pingeonhole; there's doom in it for sure. It reminds of The Ruins of Beverast and Urna. Any one into complex, proggy dark doomy music should check this out:

Perhaps a bit of a strange request, but does anyone know anything that could be classified as death-doom fused with post-hardcore?

I'm wanting to say Dead in the Water is the closest to come to mind, though there is a bit of a sludge/post-metal overtone to them as well.

Some weeks ago I tried Majestic Downfall again and figured The Blood Dance is actually a cool album. It recalls early Katatonia and October Tide mixed with some black metal moments here and there without falling into the trap of becoming pseudo melodic doom/death (unlike plenty of bands that were inspired by Katatonia.) The result is something massive and riff-y that definitely has its emotionally draining aspects - the tormented vocals certainly get that job done.

Two bands

Both out of the old Dutch Scene

Etherial Winds and Sad Whisperings

I have their albums, and they basically seem to never, ever get mentioned by anyone, even though they're both high quality shit, the Etherial Winds being a little more death-y, and Sad Whisperings being a little more doomy, with a strange almost 70s vibe to them.

And, they're super heavy actually and have a great, majestic sense to them.

I knew Sad Whisperings, but Etherial Winds are new to me, thanks for the tip; it's some typical early 90ies death doom. Worth a try for history purpose at least.

Another Finnish band and I'm not sure what is the OP's definition of post-hardcore (Isis vs. Unwound) but Ever Circling Wolves seem to take influence from both desth/doom and post-metal https://youtu.be/y_n4WSwYsuU

Trying to bring this thread back to life with some cool recommendations that I've found.

Stumbled upon the demo of Bigotry, the pre-Dissolving of Prodigy band and the demo got reissued under the Dissolving name. It's funny how English this sounds; in fact, I'd almost call it a combination between the death metal-grit of As the Flower Withers and the melancholic dread of Gothic.

(starts at 37:40)

I'm sure plenty of you are aware of Ras Algethi and I like their demo so far. The church organs really make it feel gothic, cathedral like.

while listening to stuff for that poll i was listening to the first Indesinence album once again.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... b7GGXSULSM
imo an absolute overlooked band killer doom/death more in the style of Incantation, Disembowelment and Candlemass than the usual Celtic Frost style common in more death metal oriented doomdeath.

Indesinence is a great band, but imo went a notch down with each next album. The debut is eventually the only one I keep listening to. Noctambulism is too dull to listen to all the way through without letting go a yawn (Ahab obviously listened to Indesinence - the first riff on the album, striking...), and the last one (I think they split after that) is a rather impersonal mish mash. Still, the guy are talented and it's never 'bad' per se.

I consider Anhedonist and the recent project Atramentus to be of the same rather limited school, death doom flirting with funeral. A style I love, I must say. Ahab would be a more epic version of that style..

Anhedonist aint bad - I used to have some issues with them, but over time started to appreciate their debut. Shame they split up soon after, though.

Sönma's new album is out: https://sonmaterra.bandcamp.com/album/ether

Titanic drone doom where something actually happens. It's free on top of it.

Ahab is one of those bands that sit in the fringes; their epic tone within an extreme death doom frame is also unique. I'm afraid there's nothing else like them. epic+melodic+crushing... Keywords to lead you another similar band maybe?

This was pretty solid. Thanks for sharing this, I'm gonna check one of their full-lengths out in a bit.

Nightfell have made a big splash with their new album which propells them to the summit of the very best Death Doom metal bands. I am in awe in front of such a clever display of talent that expresses it-selfs in many exciting ways, from Bolt-Throwery stampede to Ahab-like solemn liturgies over dark ambient glooms. The only flaw: the sad circus closes its washed-out curtains to fast, alas.

Another very fine surprise I can't not mention: Talsur is making huge progress albums after albums, each new one refining his take on epic Funerary death doom. The new album is an epiphany to me. It has also the best title and imo te best coverart too.

And as usual with this artist, it is free; if you're into this kind of melodic dark and slow stuff, do yourself a favour:

This is awesome looking forward to listening to the full album tomorrow. Pretty new to the Genre of Death Doom but I've really been enjoying bands like Spectral Voice and Cerebral Rot. Would love to hear more stuff like them.

I must say, I can't say much of Cerebral Rot as it's not the kind of stuff i enjoy.. ! (maybe Hooded Menace would be a rec to consider though)

more akin to the austere and massive brand of metal SV practice, give a try to Krypts or Corpsessed that yield to the call of doom to some great extend and are packed with superbly dark atmos.

I have to mention the seminal works of Disembowelment and at least the first albums by Evoken too, which all flirt with funeral doom and inspired SV.

Then try Fuoco Fatuo.

Hey Thanks so much for these recommendations. I checked out all of them except Evoken gotta get on that. But yeah Corpsessed is tight and Krypts is alright. I really dig Fuoco Fatuo. I drive a lot at night and its perfect for such occasions. Its like your swimming in a spooky cave with who know what creepin on you. Very deep looking forward to repeat listens. The song at like 20mins in is so good. I listened to Disembowelment a couple of months back and wasn't too into it. But people seem to really love it here. I gotta give it another try. Thanks again. Great Recommendations.

Checked that album once so far and wasn't impressed; felt really incomplete. I might have to try it again, though. I still like A Sanity Deranged, which is Bolt Thrower meets The Ruins of Beverast.

Anyone here into Beyond Dawn? By the time they released the debut, they weren't really doom/death metal anymore (although that album sounds far better than most non-doom/death metal albums of comparable bands), but the Longing for Scarlet Days EP is some interesting stuff. Think of early Anathema gone post-punk or something. Pretty eerie, yet welcoming stuff.

I love Beyond Dawn's first few CDs - "Pity Love" is one of my favorite CDs from the 90s. They completely lost me with "Electric Sulking Machine" though.

That reminds me, I should dust off that "Bygones" compilation one of these days (it has all their early EPs).

Stumbled upon this lately. Think of early Samael-meets Dutch doom/death metal and you're not far off.

I didn't see it mentioned: Mournful congregation's new Ep offers an exciting view on the band's abilities to write more direct songs, gripping and obsessive. First song on this 3-track ep is of this ilk. The other one is more respectful of MC's canon, while good it doesn't captivate me as much. 3rd track is a re-recording of an older song.

Evoken contaminated by the ugliness of sludge, it's Worm/ Foreverglade; very interesting mix of ethereal FD and terrestrial gungy death doom. the songwriting shows some captivating intricacies.... Happy to have found that out.

Anyone here a fan of Substance for God? They played doom/death metal in the vein of early Paradise Lost. Obscure, yet worthy stuff.

I have this album on cd. yes, it's an original project, gritty death doom with shades of gothic and some exquisite atmo piano-driven passages. Good band they were.

I def recommend this astonishing sludgy drone doom band, DVVELL. Lots of exciting dynamics in there, yet gloomy and oppressive as it should.

Anyone here familiar with Russian Winter? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntM8L_k1v1g

They play a raw style of doom/death metal and for comparison's sake, think of Grindmaster Dead with a notable Celtic Frost influence.

How about Sarnath's debut album 'Overshine'? The album is rather okay, a bit quirky, but it's in 'Amok' era style... And the vocals are sung in what we call here, rally-English.
