Not sure whether this is the best thread for this, but seems like something should be done sooner or later. Seems like Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine have gone by the name Grand Est as of September 2016. Grand Est is the region encompassing all three regions - Strasbourg being its capital.
http://www.britannica.com/place/Grand-Est

I think we should drop Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne, and Lorraine, and start using Grand Est instead. Could HellBlazer do that in one fell swoop? Or do they have to be changed manually?

@users: Wait for Azmodes' or Diamhea's confirmation before going on an editing spree.

Actually, the whole french region system got a massive overhaul merging the former 22 regions into 13.

It's been a month. Any news regarding France? Shall we start the Blitzkrieg?

All "Burgundy" and "Franche-Comté" changed (incl album notes/recording infos and other band's notes. Also took care of whatever region(s) was on those band's pages.)

Sadly there is no advanced artist search, so in order to change origin or notes we'd have to go through all french artists manually.
Is there a way of showing a list of those? Or at least those who have anything entered in their "Origin" field (or a french region in their notes)?

EDIT: "Normandy" (Lower and Upper) cleared.

EDIT 2: "Centre" was changed to "Centre-Val de Loire" in 2015 before the massive overhaul. Don't miss out on that ;)

Thanks, Paganius.
I'll be taking care of Occitanie (ex-Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées). I've started already, but can't finish this in one sitting.

Thank you *blushes* :-D

Auvergne cleaned up. Rhône-Alpes next.

After that and Grand Est only Hauts-de-France (Nord-Pas-de-Calais & Picardy) remains, I think.

And the artist and label pages, of course.

Also I think we almost killed the site :ugh: loading the page took ages in the middle of the editing war :-D

Thanks, Storm. You're doing well yourself, young man.

Alsace is no more. Will do Lorraine tomorrow. :)
Edit: Ça y est. C'est fini. Champagne-Ardenne aussi.

Rhône-Alpes est morte, Vive l'Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes :-D
-> Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes completed

Saw you did Picardy as well, I guess I'll start with the labels then.

True, but if you have the time, please take care of Nord-Pas-de-Calais as well, Paganius.

I went through all bands from France and filled in what was missing. Some of them had only the city mentioned, so I added the region, too.
I don't think these cities still exist:
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/So ... 3540401174
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/P% ... 3540411988
https://www.metal-archives.com/bands/Acarus/3540401282
Not sure what to do with them.

Pictavia was the region where the picts lived. But that was somewhere in Scotland and I don't think it has anything to do with France.

Dauphiné is a pretty old region of france, most of it is now in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpse while some parts are now located in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

And that autricum thingy or what it was seems to be a part of of Chartres, Centre-Val de Loire

Used the band's previous location, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, for this incarnation, too.

Used Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes as per your suggestion and their Bandcamp.

Cheers  It's been a pleasure ;) There should be more countries drastically changing their region system, it was fun :-D

The artist pages are still missing though since I'd need a list of those from one of the webmasters, because
a) I don't want to go through all bands AGAIN to get to the artist pages
b) It doesn't include artists from France which entered/joined bands after moving to other countries/regions.
c) afaik there are no lists like we have them for bands and labels ("Alphabetical" or "By country")

Or they do some magic and auto-replace them with some lines of code. Normandy and Centre should by changed manually though (at least in the notes), because I encountered the term in studio names or recording locations (like a generic youth centre or stuff like that).

There won't be that many artists to change, I suppose because nobody cares about completing their entries anyway so most "City/region of Origin" fields are empty anyways. I think we updated 2-2.5k bands. With an average of let's say 4 members each, there would be 8-10k related artists.

-bands with no line-up
-artists with multiple bands
-artists that have no place of origin entered.

Leaves maybe a couple hundert at most.

Thanks, Deri.

A lot of Czech bands are missing the region. Some have the city spelled wrong. We could tackle those next... Some time next week maybe if Derigin approves.

Many bands for most countries are missing the regions, but I'm not touching anything I don't know :-D Also I still want to get through the Hessian side of the archives and shouldn't get distracted so easily.

Might join you for a few, but not quite as much as this time.

Took a bit longer than planned due to heat-induced lazyness, but I declare this to be done. Just some multiple-choice locations left I could not figure out, but I think we can live with that :D

And I think I know more about French geographics than German now...

(Hand-)numbered needs to be copied from the version description field into the additional notes.
https://www.metal-archives.com/search/a ... re=#albums
It's always been kept that way. There's +200 points if anyone's up for the task.

Might do this and clean up the albums while I'm at it.
If someone else wants to do it, please make it worth it by cleaning up Gatefolds and other stuff while you're on it ;)

I don't like the current practice for writing in a non-metal band's additional notes the one album based on which the band was accepted. "Accepted based on Album X" works fine for us regulars, but not our audience. To a newcomer, it appears that the band accepted something, with zero clarity as to what... our band acceptance criteria will not occur to them. Most unregistered visitors and even new users don't have the foggiest idea what our criteria for band acceptance is (one predominantly metal album), and many probably don't even know that a band queue even exists. This is why I think "Accepted based on Album X" will confuse the reader.

I think we should write "The band was accepted into the Metal Archives based on Album X". Far clearer and less ambiguous for visitors, and it could even help new users to better understand our rules. If a moderator gives the go-ahead to this clean-up, there's about 75 points up for grabs.

Yeah, you know, if for the sake of clarity I'd be fine with that formatting for the note.
