I don't think either of Gatecreeper's albums are anything special. But the songs definitely work better live (perhaps even more so the new songs), especially when I saw them and they played a super loud show. Some of the slow riffs that sound bland with the quieter, more subdued production on the album come across as just powerful, oppressive, and funereal on their live set with their much louder, fatter live sound. Also, the tendency to lose clarity with the buzzsaw sound didn't really matter because the actual songwriting is often kinda bland anyways. It's more about the noisy, powerful waves of distortion.

Yeah I've never understood they hype surrounding Gatecreeper as a studio band. I am 100% on board with them as a live band and will always catch them when they tour, but the songs on record just don't do anything for me.
