I always had zero interest in this band, even back in the day.

This didn't really change my mind. The song was... honestly, it was neither great nor terrible. It reminded me a lot of Shinedown, but with a bit more showy, flashy instrumental parts. So...better than Shinedown I suppose, but then again, Shinedown were never a very interesting band. And neither was Extreme, except maybe for nostalgia's sake. They were always one of those bands you sat through when watching "Headbanger's Ball" while hoping they'd give us a treat and play that elusive Kreator or Testament video.

Nuno said he rips it up on the new album as an homage to EVH. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In a statement to Guitar World, Bettencourt explained how the late guitar great inspired the record: “When Eddie Van Halen passed, it really hit me. I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”

I don't play guitar, so I could be wrong about this, but the part in question sounds a lot like what Nuno did on Midnight Express off "Waiting For The Punchline" (1995). So not exactly new tricks.

Spoiler: show

I saw Nuno on tour with Zak Wylde, Tosin Abasi (spelling?) and Yngwie Malmsteen a few years back. Nuno stole the show, IMO.

I really only like the III Sides album, but yea Nuno has been an accomplished guitarist for some 30 plus years now.

I have mixed feelings about this single, but I highly recommend their Saudades de Rock album from around 2008. It's like a whole album of better versions of this song. Killer stuff.

Indeed. That's one of the all-time best reunion albums. Great album.

"III Sides" remains their magnum opus, however.

I revisited Saudades after hearing Rise but still didn't care for it, a handful of ok songs, imo.

III Sides remains the only Extreme studio album I haven't checked out. Just tell me it's heavy, and I can fix this.

It's very eclectic as all of their albums are. There are some heavy songs & riffs (check out "Warheads") but it's got a wide degree of variety - many songs are not heavy at all.

yea one should at least give III Sides a few spins if they are at all interested in Extreme. It's a great album and Tragic Comic was my favorite Extreme song for 30 years, until I heard Rise. I wonder if Six will replace III Sides as my favorite Extreme album after 30 years.

Works for me. I'll check III Sides out. Thanks for the suggestions. Nuno rarely disappoints.

This thread made me go back and revisit this band’s discography.

Firstly, the new song is kick ass, and I am very much looking forward to checking out this album in full. And the idea that Nuno of all people is aping YouTube “guitarists” is laughable. If anything, his indirect influence on these players is traceable.

My thoughts on their albums:

-Extreme: Much better than I remembered, but still way too close to glam for my tastes. The cheese factor is very high here.

-Pornograffitti: I didn’t care for this album then, and it hasn’t aged well for me. Some great playing and harmonizing, but even closer to glam than the first album. Stuff like “Lil Jack Horny”, “Suzi”, “When I’m President”, and the title track are so fucking corny it’s unbearable.

-III Sides: A masterwork. Not much more needs to be said. “Stop The World” and “Am I Ever Gonna Change?” remain some of my all time favorite songs. It’s amazing how excising the cheese factor makes this band much more impactful. The only things I’d change are the ill advised rap section in “Cupid’s Dead” and the invoking of MLK in “Peacemaker Die”.

-Waiting For The Punchline: A flawed excellent record, if that make sense. I greatly appreciate the concept of this being produced in a rawer way with an incredibly live mix, and the songs are definitely there, but it’s still lacking to a degree. I think this would have been way better if Mangini was the drummer on all the songs instead of just three, because on the other 8-9 songs, Paul Geary plays in a way that suggests disinterest or that his heart is not in it, and that drags this album down significantly. The songs that Mangini does play on are absolutely on fire, though. Fucking Mangini.

-Saudades De Rock: The album I was least familiar with. I need a few more listens, but I very much appreciate the straightforward hard rock feel on this, and Figuieredo is an excellent fit for this band.

Looking forward to this new album.

two more singles dropped today.

#Rebel is a good tune, I find it somewhat distracting on Banshee that the verses sound so much like Girls, Girls, Girls.

Upon hearing Rise I have been keeping Saudades de Rock in rotation over the last month and a half, and I must say it has grown on me.
I can’t decide if I think the chorus for Star is catchy or annoying, I go back and forth on that one; but other then that I like the whole album with favs being Ghost, Last Hour and Run.

As for the rest of the discography
I still don’t have much use for the debut or Punchline outside of There Is No God and Shadow Boxing. I like a handful of songs from Pornograffitti Money (In God We Trust), It’s A Monster, When I’m President, Lil’ Jack Horny and Decadence Dance.
So in closing I would say Saudades is a good album but my favourite remains III Sides by some distance. And I am very much looking forward to Six.

Extreme - Ghost

This album is fucking great.

Might end up being their second best overall, below III Sides. Need more listens to see how it stacks up overall. But first impressions are highly positive-a loose, fun hard rock record with a ton a great playing and vocal harmonies.

EDIT: OK, “Beautiful Girls” is a big swing and miss. I don’t begrudge it’s existence though, and I suppose give a smidge of credit for trying something totally out of left field for them. And it does have an excellent guitar solo (not surprisingly). But yeah, this one song is not for me. But I stand by what I said above for all remaining songs.

A couple times through and I don't think this is gonna measure up to III Sides; but it's still a solid album nonetheless, the only song I'm struggling with at the moment is Hurricane. Still prefer Saudades at this point, will see how much this new one grows on me.

A stellar album. Not a bad track.

There have been a TON of great releases this year from '80s hard rock bands or '80s influenced' bands:

Sweet / Lynch
Alcatrazz
Winger
Extreme
Mike Tramp
Revolution Saints

Sweet / Lynch - this one had potential musically speaking but I struggle with Sweet's vocals. Same problem I have with recent Stryper albums, which also sound good musically speaking.
Alcatrazz - tried the first few tunes but didn't do much for me.
Winger - some good tunes on here, with prob 4 or 5 fillers. IV is still easily my favorite.
Extreme - one stand out track Rise, #Rebel, Save Me, Thicker Than Blood and The Mask are also good. Most of the rest except for Hurricane in particular are solid as well.
Mike Tramp - didn't haven't any interest in rerecorded White Lion songs, and the one track I checked out for curiosity sake Little Fighter, was butchered.
Revolution Saints - this ADV stuff from Frontiers bores me too tears.

I'll give the Winger album another chance, but it sounded pretty weak to me on the first listen. I am a fan of a bunch of their stuff btw.

Sweet's vocals are indeed an acquired taste. Not for everyone.

I'm sorry. I feel that if we did have a dialogue, it would go something like this:

Disembodied: Haven't we heard this riff before?
In_Zane: Yeah. In hundreds, maybe thousands of other songs.
Disembodied: Why does it go on for so long, without changing?
In_Zane: Dunno. Maybe they couldn't think of anything else.
Disembodied: Isn't it boring to you? The lack of imagination, the repetition?
In_Zane: Nope. I enjoy it.
Disembodied: Oh, I see. Well, thanks for your constructive criticism and feedback, I feel we had a nice dialogue.
