Hot take: I wish rap rock came back.

However, that comes with a massive throbbing caveat: it has to predominantly follow Rage Against the Machine's first two albums, which is to say "be more funkified Black Sabbath-meets-Wu Tang Clan," like if Robin Trower and Led Zeppelin crossed paths with the Sugarhill Gang and Run DMC. The shitty chug-fest combined with pseudo-tough guy angst that dominated rap rock ever since Biohazard (a band I don't even think is that bad) and especially Limp Bizkit (the musical equivalent of a bacteriophage) can get fuckslapped. I have NO Earthly idea why rap-rock, rap metal, and rapcore had to so totally go in that direction after around '95. Nü metal alone can't explain it because that trend largely died off after 2003 and yet every band that attempted rap rock afterwards still followed the exact same pattern of being pained, angsty, filled with inner demons that the singer needs to scream and rap away, with the guitarist being considered daring if they do anything other than chug or, in the rare case of a solo, use any other pedal beside the wah-wah.
I'm not saying rap metal would've ever reached the heights of other genres if it had stuck with early RATM, Faith No More, the bits of Anthrax, the better parts of Biohazard, and whomever else played that style. But at least they had more going on. Even the first Limp Bizkit album, in spite of the songwriting, felt like it was trying something different at the very least.

Why?

So in other words my wish is more that I want rap rock to redeem itself.

Edit:
This isn't what I mean

Every single thing about that band, song, and video was ill-advised. Bonus points for finding an actual dashcam car wreck video and putting it in their stupid music video for their stupid song.

Also, this comment wins:

You thought Five Finger Death Punch was bad? Well, former drummer Jeremy Spencer has created his own band, Pyschosexual. It's even more unlistenable, and with the costumes and lyrics he is trying way too hard to be edgy.

So I found out recently that Mike Orlando of Adrenaline Mob has a project with Ailyn, formerly of Sirenia, on vocals. I'm a big fan of both of them individually, but I didn't actually listen to a song from the album until now and I am very thoroughly unimpressed.

Just about everything about this is sonically unpleasing. I pretty much died of laughter when the fast part started and Ailyn tried so very hard to sound gruff, and so spectacularly failed. What an incredibly funny song for all the wrong reasons.

I've unfortunately heard this band. And yeah, it's supremely awful. I think it's supposed to be the soundtrack to a horror porno series or something that Spencer created.

Doing a cover of a pop song, and just adding harsh vocals, or blast beats, is fucking annoying and stupid. The musicians who do such things are usually just “black/death metal 101.” I don’t really care for Thou, but their Nirvana covers are good. Chained to the bottom of the ocean’s cover of “I will possess your heart” is actually well constructed, despite being way different. Even Celtic Frost’s non-metal covers are way better, because they don’t sound like some low effort trolling. Six feet under covering Thin Lizzy was better than that.

OMG. That's a new level of badness. I've heard low effort covers, but this... it just doesn't fit. It seems too close to the original that it's not a parody, but it also manages to ruin it in a way I didn't know was possible.

TBH I couldn't listen to it even halfway.

Caveat - Not necessarily the worst song I've ever heard, but since I laughed all the way through - from the Reagan quote at the start, to the chorus-mit-exploding-villages, to the general Team America vibe. I dub this FREEDOMCORE.

I lol'd at the dude's super weak attempts at singing in a higher register. That was some hilariously bad boomer rock.

Also, if that song merely amused you, I present to you something that's one step above freedomcore: AMERICAN RIGHT WING FREEDOMCORE.

One of my favorite stupid things in that video that I never noticed until now was during the photo montage of devastation (backed by lyrics about how "they" wanna take our guns away, the implication being that THIS is what you get when the GUVMINT has too much control), a photo of the fall of Berlin during WWII is shown. Something tells me that either 1. These dudes just wanted a photo of the Communist flag in there just to throw in how evil they think Communism is, completely unaware of the photo's context and origins, or 2. They're just Nazis that don't want to call themselves Nazis because calling yourself a Nazi wasn't in style when they made this video.

Oh, and if you can believe it, that's not actually their worst song. It's the worst of their originals, but the actual worst thing they've ever done was this ridiculous buttrock version of The Star Spangled Banner that they played at a NASCAR race many years ago. Watch throughout for the reactions from various drivers and military people in attendance.

I was curious so I looked up the bio of that band. The worst thing about them for me isn't just their lyrics- so they like guns, the military, and America; that's all fine with me. Or at least they claim to like America; one can only wonder where they stand on the recent attempt to overthrow our elected government???

But the worst thing for me is they're a manufactured band. According to their bio, they didn't form the band- some sleazy promoter/ right wing capitalist hired a bunch of random musicians, screened them for their background and military service, etc- and put the band together, Backstreet Boys/N'Sync style. And the music that resulted from this soulless prefab enterprise (because I can't really consider it a band) is about as interesting as that of the typical manufactured teen-pop boy band, too.

I heard it too. The family says he was going through some mental issues. Silento is basically a case of getting too much fame too quick and not being able to comprehend it all.

I think people genuinely do enjoy psycho sexual, the same kind of people who enjoy his old band. People who like butt rock, and think the black album Metallica’s debut. We have the “is metal dying” threads, and the truth is, genres/subgenres/scenes that are at least a little catchy and accessible can have dedicated local scenes. The bands can at least make some money touring, and sleep on fans’ floors and couches, and have fun. You have to ask yourself, do you want metal to be mainstream? Because to be so, it would have to sound pretty bad. It doesn’t need psycho sexual fans.

Also, I guarantee you, some inverted-elitist-anti-hipster high school music teacher is going to be telling their students, that that “silento” crap is great music, while criticizing much better stuff, for being “too repetitive and uninteresting.” It’s obligatory.

This sounds like a fake video you'd see in those dumb spoofs "Something Movie". Introduce it as the cringy video made by the main character, play it for laughs, then play it (un)ironically during the credits for the two people who made it through the whole thing.

Even the band's name looks like it's something a movie exec would come up with as "fake band name".

Tramp Stamps are not only terrible, but they are very possibly an industry plant. Even if they aren't, their marketing is so terrible that they totally come off as a plant. Fantano made a couple videos about them that I recommend.

I watched that video. In the first few minutes, I was kind of pissed that I was watching a needle drop video, because he’s so annoying, but I got over it, after hearing all the information. Pretending to be some internet caricature of feminism, while working for a producer who drops date rape drugs in drinks? They’ve clearly never listened to much punk. What an insult, they make Attack Attack look like Fugazi.

I've never found Anthony to be annoying, honestly. Granted, I'm more of a casual viewer of his (and even then it's more for his side channel videos like Cringing With or talking about current dumb shit in the music industry than for his reviews), so maybe if I did a deep dive into him I'd find him more grating.

To be fair, it could be leftover “anti-hipster” bias of mine. Left over, from before I decided that being “anti-hipster” was usually people who choose not to go to shows, mad that young people had more fun than them, misidentifying people as hipsters, reducing the world to lazy stereotypes, and realized that true metal is actually a form of “indie rock,” and is one of the more hipster elitist genres anyway.

That band is a pretty transparent attempt at selling edgelordism to teenagers. They could’ve done a few hours of research, on the subcultures they’re trying to pose as. That’s like what Jared Threatin would’ve been, if he actually had any friends, to play along with him.

I used to like Anthony for a while and his style can be very enjoyable, but I realised that his reviews are only interesting if you have no idea about the genre he's talking about - I actually found his hip-hop reviews interesting because he broke it down in a way I had never considered before.

But when it gets to actual rock and metal, it gets worse and him trying to review anything prog is actively excruciatingly painful, especially seeing how confident he is and all the typical big, smart words he uses. And I do mean him saying things that are objectively wrong and incorrect - he bashed Devin Townsend's "Empath" as an album with 1) overly compressed production, 2) "just generic prog metal", which made me stare at my screen in bewilderment and question multiple of my life choices.

Myrkur ? Not a comment on the quality of the product, but you have - correct (false) underground scandi background, sudden in-all-media presence, big festival and tour spots out of nowhere, perfect zeitgiest alcesty-atmo-folk-blackened music, artist that even looks the part in antlers-on-head costuming; all on a solidly established record label that were otherwise missing out on the aforementioned trend.

Call me cynical maybe

To be fair, I don't think Relapse Records is big enough to do something like this. She's also never been really that well known. Sure, she had a lot of publicity (which is expected), a lot of well know people worked with her (Teloch and Garm) and she toured with Deafheaven but that's what happens when you're already rich and have the right connections.

She's also distanced herself from black metal and plays folk now. I don't know, I'm not sure. I don't really like her though (the first LP was promising but nothing more).

Myrkur taking a break from pop, and collaborating with black metal musicians she knew, is actually a believable story. She could sing and play guitar, and was going to be the face of the band. I think that Relapse came up with the marketing. But, unlike tramp stamps, when they were exposed, they didn’t act like they weren’t trolling, they just didn’t respond to the kvltists. Unlike some true goat metal label, the people they were alienating weren’t going to buy it anyway. Relapse’s reputation isn’t damaged, they put out a bunch of popular death metal, reissues of cult classics, like GISM and Zouo, have Myrkur playing with mainstream metal tours, and have Red Fang playing super accessible stuff. I hear stories about them being exploitative, with lesser known bands, but they don’t need to manufacture anything themselves.

The difference with tramp stamps, is that, rather than playing a genre they actually listened to, and using edgy marketing to get attention, the marketing came first. They chose the easiest punk genre, to be a poser in, and the fans still called them out. They come across as trolls, because they seem like they just watched a bunch of “the left is destroying society/kids these days are the worst” YouTube clickbait, decided that what it said was true, and that they were going to be that.

When their target audience called them out for sexism and hypocrisy, and they found out that fox news stereotypes of them aren’t necessarily true, they used gaslighter tactics, to act like people were attacking them, out of misogyny. The worst thing, however, is that one of them works for a pop producer, who is only famous, outside of music industry insiders, because the pop singer Kesha accused him of putting shit in her drink, then raping her. He became more newsworthy, because he sued her, for breach of contract, for working with different producers. Regardless of whether he did it or not, someone who works with someone like that, being in a “men are bad, and all at fault for perpetuating misogyny” band, is as fake as you could get.

It would be like, if Electric Wizard’s Jus Oborn and Liz Buckingham, were caught working in the office, of a lobbying group, campaigning against cannabis and gun legalization.

This is from Mordred's 2020 comeback EP, Volition. I thought their reunion would bring about some pretty cool music in a sea of boring Bandcamp death / thrash, but this sounds like A$AP Ferg in the studio with the Insane Clown Posse.

On a positive note, all of their previous OOP back catalogue has been uploaded to streaming services now, which is pretty nice.
