There's been some meh stuff in here, but I've been highly sports entertained by the Drew/Bobby slobberknocker (and omg they actually booked the right winner and I'm honestly kind of fucking amazed), Rollins/Cesaro (no shocker there, two of the best workers on the planet), and the New Day against AJ and Omos.

Alrighty, night 1's over, and it was overall fine, but a definite mixed bag. The big matches more than delivered, with Drew vs. Lashley kicking all kinds of ass, Cesaro vs. Seth being quite fun, Sasha vs. Bianca being an epic main event, and Bad Bunny overdelivering to the point that I'd be totally fine with him continuing on with wrestling. However, there were some definite low points to the night. Hulk Hogan simply existing at this point is tiresome, and the company putting him next to Titus, a guy who, professional about it as he was tonight, is no fan of Hogan and actually liked tweets criticizing WWE for putting Hogan on the show. The women's tag team turmoil fucking sucked, and the bad choice of winners instantly made the tag title match tomorrow must skip. The Braun vs. Shane cage match was also rather pointless, with the lamest "Shane takes a big bump" spot in ages. There were also WAY too many goddamn replays and recaps. The show started 40 minutes late because of the weather; You'd think they'd realize that nobody wants to be there until almost midnight and cut at least SOME of the fluff out of the show. At least they didn't sabotage the women's main event by putting it at the end of a 7 hour long, mostly boring show like they did the triple threat at Mania 35.

Overall, night one gets a 7/10 from me. Hopefully night two is at least mostly good like this night was.

I largely agree you Subrick with regards to the first night. I thought that the Bunny match overdelivered, and he was good considering. There were a few points where his inexperience showed, but overall the match was fine.

I'm not sure if it says more about the state of wrestling or just my preferred flavors, almost entirely likely to be the latter, but the only thing I'm excited about right now is the potential for a Mox/Gage bloodfest following Bloodsport 6 and Spring Break.

I only watch WWE a few times a year at this point and I just finished WrestleMania night 1. I'm not updated to much on storylines and just take it for what I'm presented at the moment of the show itself.

The bad:

Womens Tag team Turmoil: there seems to be no reason for a tag division to exist and while the US women have become lots better there is still a quality problem if the division is taken as a whole.

The inoffensive:

The New Day [c] vs. AJ Styles and Omos: I'm not fan of crazy fun gimmicks like the new day but I enjoy the big/small type pairings like AJ and Omos. If they book them as a team it will work for a good while. If they push Omos as a singles he should be booked like giants were in the 70's and 80's.

Braun vs Shane: Fine match with some creativity (ripping the cage). The big Shane bump looked liked it hurt a lot.Usually he does his stuff with crash pads but this was a legitimate somersault from the cage onto an unpadded ring. Ouch!

Bad Bunny and Damian Priest vs. John Morrison and The Miz: not much of a fan of any of the people involved (haven't seen much of Pries though). Bunny did good for a celebrity but I don't want him in the ring again.

The good:

Bobby Lashley [c] vs. Drew McIntyre: Fun match and a surprising and definite win. Haven't seen Lashleys rise to the top so he still feels like a mid-carder to me but he looked good and strong here and I'm always up for some MVP.

Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins: I like Cesaro but never cared much for Rollins. Good match though and the crowd loved the finish. I hope Cesary will get a real chance now.

The best:

Sasha Banks [c] vs. Bianca Belair: Very good main event, probably my favourite match of the show. They managed to combine a more serious tone with some nice highspots. If I complained above about the quality of the womens division as a whole I think the main events are often good so they're on the right track. Really nice climax to the match.

I've not watched the second night of WrestleMania, but I have been following it where possible, as I'm at work. From what I can gather, the second night was shit compared to the first.

That Fiend gimmick needs to die. The crowd clearly jeered Alexa and Bray after the match. Does anyone like this gimmick? The Fiend lost because Alexa had slime leaking from her skull right?

Asuka predictably lost in such a stupid way. So now you can walk into Smackdown with no back story in the brand, and demand a world title shot. Ok, cool. Great booking.

Kevin Owens can fuck off. He's the embodiment of every Attitude fan, complete with the super kicks, sharpshooter and stunner. Unoriginal wrestler, and I don't even know what his gimmick is.

The tag match, nobody cares.

Sheamus and Riddle, nobody cares. Sheamus went from being in the title picture to fighting a stoner.

I have no opinion on Big E or Apollo Crews. I watch Raw, against my better judgement, and I can't stomach sitting through Smackdown also.

I haven't seen the main event, but they managed to fuck Edge so badly they made him heel, right off the back of that fairytale Rumble win a couple of months ago. Reigns is a great heel though. Shame that heel turn didn't happen back in 2015, when he was shoved down your throat, and everybody just fucking hated him.

WrestleMania night 2:

The bad:

Bray Wyatt vs. Randy Orton. Not a fan of the match itself and the feud must have gone on for years now. They also had the horrible worm match at WrestleMania a few years ago. I usually don't like over the top gimmicks but parts of The Fiend I like, other parts not at all.

Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler [c] vs. Natalya and Tamina. Didn't work. The one thing going for all these women is that they have some force to them. To many in the division are so light handed. That said all of these but Baszler are uninteresting and rather boring.

The passable:

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn. The match was perhaps better than passable but I don't care for these two much at all.

Riddle [c] vs. Sheamus. I hate Riddle. All the things I despise. Talking stupid, drug user gimmick and stupid entrance. A shame since he's a good wrestler. Sheamus was good with Cesaro but isn't much of a favourite either.

Big E [c] vs. Apollo Crews. Hard hitting but never got going. Could have been a RAW match.

Asuka [c] vs. Rhea Ripley. I love Asuka. She is by far the best in ring womens wrestler but she never quite got the chance to dominate the division. Ripley could become good but feels a little bit green. The match was ok but nothing special.

The good:

Roman Reigns [c] vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Edge.
I don't think they intended the match to have a sow build but it kind of worked that way. It was made good by a nice climax towards the end. I'm just happy Edge didn't win. I don't hate Edge, I actually appreciated him quite a bit back in the day, but I wish he had stayed retired. Got no problem with Reigns winning.

I did watch the Reigns/Edge/Bryan match last night after work. It was a great main event. Not a classic by any stretch, but easily the best of the second night. It saved the second night from being a completely mediocre WrestleMania.

As for this recent slate of cuts:

-Samoa Joe to either TNA, ROH, or NJPW Strong (with occasional AEW crossovers).

-The Iconics to AEW with Peyton as the worker and Billie as the mouthpiece.

-Mickie James to either NWA or TNA (with occasional AEW crossovers).

-Chelsea Green back to TNA.

-Bo Dallas is said to effectively be retired anyhow.

-The rest to the indies.

Peyton Royce at the very least is almost guaranteed to end up in AEW, as her husband (Shawn Spears) is there. I could see them grabbing Billie too and letting them be a tag team that does singles stuff too. Mickie James's husband is Nick Aldis, so going anywhere but the NWA would be kinda shocking. Chelsea Green will most likely end up back in Impact, Bo Dallas is, as you said, pretty much retired and gonna do his farm, and everyone else (except Joe) is gonna be working the indies if they end up staying in wrestling.

That leaves Samoa Joe. I honestly have no clue what he will do. At this point in his life, he's probably built up a pretty big nest for himself, especially with the WWE money coming through over the last 6 years, so while he probably doesn't necessarily need to stay in wrestling, he most certainly would still have a dump truck full of money backed up to his house by whoever does such a thing, and if I'm a betting man, I've a feeling Tony Khan will be the one to rent that truck, fill it with money, and send it to Joe's residence.

Samoa Joe needs to be medically cleared to return to the ring right? If he is he can go wherever he wants. My guess is that it will be AEW or NJPW. Or perhaps being open to different bookings. I could see him try to be a free agent and do stuff here and there. He could do good money doing dream matches in different promotions.

While I always liked the workrate most in wrestling I always has a good eye to Billie Kay. She is an awful wrestler but that's sort of the point. She has tons of charisma and a fun character but most of all she has twinkle in her eye in much of what she does. She is entertainment.

I don't care for the others at all.

To be clear, I very much want the Iconics in AEW. The rest I could basically live without.

Samoa Joe, I don't know if his best days are behind him. He's got a lot of mileage on him. I don't watch WWF so I haven't been keeping up with his recent work.

Billie Kay is probably the worst wrestler across all 3 brands, but she made a great and memorable, if somewhat limited team with Peyton. They'll go straight to AEW and hopefully they can add something worthwhile to their terrible women's tag division.

Was Samoa Joe ever cleared from his health issues last year?

Vince Russo always said that Samoa joe was always injured or accident prone when he worked in tna/impact. Maybe wwe finally finally got tired of paying him to do nothing.

Russo has said just a ton of shit that hasn't ever been true, and Joe only seemed to have injury issues that magically coincided with stretches of shit booking. Weird how that works.

Eh. Take everything that guy says with a pinch of salt. He's taken credit for everything from the Austin 3:16 promo to inventing hardcore wrestling.

I am looking forward to the Pillman episode. That guy was truly nuts, and his story is so compelling.

It was a good ep (just watched it yesterday, actually), and in-between this and the new Biography episodes on WWE legends, it's a great time for wrastlin' docs:

I caught them both on YouTube over the weekend. They were excellent. Everybody interviewed was relevant to the story. Melanie came across as a fucked up mess, which was the consensus when she was with Brian. Brittany's story was truly tragic. Watching Bischoff trip over himself in trying to save face was amazing.

Man, seeing Melanie in the 90s vs. Melanie today is a harsh reminder how drugs completely fuck you up. They make you a husk of your former self.

Every now and then I dip into this thread - my brother was really into this stuff when we were kids, so I recognise a few names here & there - but today's dip gave me a start - "Jesus, Bret Hart got old !", and then I realise it was 20 years ago when I last saw this stuff properly. What a way to start a day

There's something oddly poetic about New Jack dying the day after Nick Gage's episode of Dark Side of the Ring comes out. Gage really was New Jack's successor as THE deathmatch wrestler in the United States. Just like Gage, New Jack had this intense, insatiable connection with the crowd, and boy did crowds around the country suck up everything and anything New Jack was gonna do for a while. Yes, Jerome Young the man was absolutely out of his mind and kind of a shitty dude, but he was a walking entertainment machine wherever he went. Having done a full watch of ECW's PPVs at this point, New Jack was very much one of the sole good things about ECW in 2000. In between all these blech matches with no drama or stakes or reason to care, Da Baldies would get the ever loving shit beat out of them by New Jack and whoever was joining him, New Jack would hit people with VCRs, and vacuum cleaners, and guitars and stab them with a fork, and then jump off a balcony onto them, and it never once got old. In that regard, he is one of the most satisfying wrestlers to watch perform ever.

RIP New Jack.

New Jack was a massive piece of shit as a human being, but him being so open and honest about his shitty tendencies just added to the charisma. One of the most horribly underrated promo guys EVER.

New Jack was over in ECW but for me it stops there. He was everything that was wrong with wrestling. He had nothing in the ring, which sometimes can be fine and work, but he was also dangerous for real. Hardcore and death match wrestling isn't my favourite kind of wrestling but some people make it work (Megumi Kudo, Atsushi Onita, Hayabusa, Mick Foley etc) but New Jack had nothing. No finesse, to technique, no psychology. He was lucky Paul Heyman knew what to do with limited performers.

Not a person I'd celebrate, awful human being and didn't do anything worth remembering in the ring either. Other horrible people actually have contributed something. I remember nothing New Jack did that was any good.

He was over anywhere he worked, really. The only time his act didn't "get over" was in SMW after the OJ promo, but that's more because of the region and the audience than anything else.
