Pretty simple. Post what you're currently listening to if it's not metal.

I'm currently listening to The Commercial Album, by The Residents.

You can just post nonmetal in the one we already have, no one will come after you.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

They haven't apprehended me yet. I've been listening to Persona 5 tunes all week long, and I'd do it again!

I can't be posting my favorite hip-hop albums in the now playing thread man! That's illegal!

"Me And Your Mama" - Childish Gambino

Love the atmosphere on this one.

Not wanting to break the law?

That's not very metal and/or hip-hop of you...

I've often wished we had a separate subforum for non-metal (or at least non-archived) music discussion. As it is, we occasionally have threads on it here, but people mostly check the tavern for non-musical topics, so it doesn't necessarily select for the right crowd. It pops up in various threads in metal discussion, but there's the constant need to keep the discussion mostly metal-focused.

NP: Louise Lemon - "Egyptian Darkness"

I wonder if anyone has ever called her "Sadele" before. I love how it kind of sounds like taking Adele's slower, moodier tunes and making them even more melancholic and brooding.

A non-metal subforum would be cool (I'd be shocked to see it happen though), but at the very least having a few general discussion threads for certain genres would be useful. I know there was a prog one or two, but those fell to the wayside ages ago. Its not like the tavern is being flooded with activity these days, so some new threads would do it some good.

NP: tricot - 上出来

Japanese indie/math rock - reliable, as always (while still expanding their sound). いない might be my favorite song of theirs now, which is rare for a band this late in their career.

Lou Reed - Wild Child

People hated (or were confused by) his debut in 1972 due to contemporary circumstances which mean precisely nothing in 2022 (why doesn't he sound like the Velvets, why is he working with English session musicians and other nonsense). These are 10 great songs, and even the production is not as bad as its infamous reputation, just somewhat muted due to the overapplication of the Dolby technique. Big deal.

I even love the bizarre, but evocative, cover art. The glamor and the grime of the big city facing the literal (Biblical?) flood.

Red House Painters - Katy Song

One of the saddest songs I've ever known. Red House Painters make music that is painfully sad yet beautiful.

Ross Jennings - "A Shadow Of My Future Self"
stunning album from the Haken frontman. Frankly, this album is 1,000x better than the dozen best Haken songs.

東京事変 (Tokyo Jihen) - 音楽

Terrible intro/outro, but the rest of the album is thankfully solid. As much as I hate skipping tracks or re-sequencing albums, I may have to make an exception here. At any rate, I'm glad this band came back.

The Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning

I got this like 7-8 years ago when I was less knowledgeable about music, and it really made no sense to me, but it was always fascinating. Such a weird band. I like the free expressiveness of old stuff from this time. An intriguing and explosive period in history. Like this isn't the 'rocking' stuff the Stones were doing, much less Sabbath, and it isn't the same kind of smooth, easy artistry of the Beatles - it's sort of just this weird psychedelic cloud with this very distinctive guitar style that's more like being trapped in a fog, with of course Lou's inimitable vocals. Very odd.

Yutaka Sado & Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - Symphony No. 5 by Shostakovich

I've been pretty obsessed with Shostakovich for the past few days. It's like really good tech death at times. I read that he was an inspiration to Voivod and I can absolutely trace their common sense for chromaticism. Also the conductor is so into it sometimes, I'm pretty sure I saw him jump around a bit in the fast parts of the first movement, lol.

Throbbing Gristle - Beachy Head

Bizarre tranquil soundscape with a hint of the sinister at all times.

PinkPantheress - I must apologise

Lotta people tend to view the Tiktok media-scape in a negative light - pointing at how it plays into an ever increasing need to consume as much low quality stuff as possible in the least amount of time, but PinkPantheress is proof that it's not all bad. Super catchy and dreamy drum and bass pop tunes that burrow into your skull indefinitely.

Eve 6 - Black Nova

This is really pretty badass, driving alt rock.

Old ballroom music. Yeah sure it's old and kind of creepy sounding, but otherwise, relaxing and pleasant.

Six hours of old ballroom tunes... I mean, what can possibly go wrong?!?

Have you ran into Nemo's Dreamscapes? I've been using it for napping. The train uploads are particularly nice.

Söldnergeist ‎- Der Rest Ist Schweigen 1992 - I had to step away for a while, and when I returned, I thought I'd accidentally skipped to a noisecore album. I think it was around the 8-minute mark. I've been on an old heavy electronics/industrial/power-electronics kick lately. It started with Militia's New European Order and ended at Le Syndicat, until this Söldnergeist ‎tape.

Every late summer/early fall in the last number of years I've seemed to get into the mood for some good 90s light acoustic/electric alt rock, and they're one of the centerpieces of my playlists for it. I was aware of this sound back in the 90s, but didn't pay enough attention at the time, since my taste was steadily getting faster, heavier, darker., and more technical. Now I appreciate it for its own relaxing feeling.

Too bad the R. Kelly connection taints it just a bit...

Dua Lipa - "Levitating"

Pure pop perfection. Can't get it out of my head.

Damn, nowhere is safe anymore. I knew about R. Kelly, but I didn't know he was the writer/producer. *sigh* Well, I'm listening for her, not for him. Was watching an old Chelsea Wolfe interview and she mentioned loving the song, so I had to check it out.

Jack White - Morning Noon & Night

Best tune on this thing, classic thumping, blood pumping, electric rock and roll. A great stomper.

I heard Hillary Duff's "Come Clean" the other day. I'm guessing a lot of pop music is like this today, but I was impressed with all the layers of electronics and sound effects. I remember hearing the Mad Men opener with headphones and being surprised with the electronic effects in the background. I love that kind of stuff and layering that seems totally unnecessary insofar as the average ear hearing, or caring for, any of it. It's almost like an architect designing hidden spaces and never telling the owners about them. Would those songs sound any different to the average, casual listener if they weren't there? Not to mention that if you hear this in most situations, like on a TV or with a poor playback system, you aren't even going to hear them anyway.

Secondwall - Beautiful Lie

Spring cleaning my Japanese CD collection (I wouldn't mind getting it reduced to 2k titles). This one was actually in my purge pile for a few years, but I think Ill hang onto this. I have several hundred CDs I need to re-evaluate, plus probably thousand more I wouldn't mind re-visisting (since its been years since I've heard them, some I've forgotten what they sound like).

ZYOLAM13 - 13”

God, why in the hell did I buy this? This is like waking up from a bad drinking binge and seeing the aftermath of questionable decisions, except I can't blame my rash of bad CD purchases last decade on alcohol this time.

I was listening to 'Automatic' while driving last Sunday and this opening track was such a cool song for a light, breezy afternoon.

Listening to F9 Riot Squad by Jess and Crabbe, french house from the 90s. One of my favorite songs ever, a beautiful bassline with a nostalgic sound.

Chelsea Wolfe - "Oui Oui Marie"

Probably song of the year so far. Crazy how little it sounds like the 100+ year old original and yet you can definitely tell it's the same song.

Alina Baraz/Nas - "Until I Met You"

I've gotten supremely picky about hip-hop in the past decade or so, and so many collaborations just seem so tacked-on, but this works. And the drum beat is just off the chart.

Dave Brubeck Quartet - The Last Set at Newport 1971. From '71-'72, it was mostly the quintet of Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Alan Dawson, and Jack Six. Both the quartet (no Paul Desmond) and quintet were amazing for those years. A few live albums and a few more easily found broadcasts are what document this group. All highly recommended if you like jazz. Tons of improvisation. Dawson is on fire in this band. They all were.

Van Halen - Everybody Wants Some!!

This was a pretty much flawless band for several of their early albums. Just so good. Almost metal too on a lot of songs.

New album finally dropped, let's hope it lives up to exceptions. Hopefully there will be a CD release soon.
