I was viewing the news on television tonight and the weather report. We just had a storm a few days back that did some damage. Not a lot but not small either. Than the person doing the weather report made the remark something like this...

"Of course after the five day forecast we will be having very cold temperatures"

How do they know this? Do they have a crystal ball or something that makes them know for sure? If it is just a prediction they are making don't they have to tell you this? Seems to me they should tell you its just a prediction if that is what the report is.

All weather forecasts are predictions in the first place, not guarantees. Not random predictions, of course, but still predictions. There is no way to foretell the weather with 100% accuracy days in advance.

At the same time, forecasts are made for a lot more than the five-day period mentioned in the weather report (albeit the further away, the more likely it is for predictions to change based upon new data observed. A minor difference between the weather forecast for tomorrow versus the actual weather as it occurs tomorrow can mean a significant change to the predictions for, say, next week Tuesday), and presumably the remark made was based upon such a longer forecast.

Yes I think it's a safe bet to say it's just you struggling with meteorology over here. Then again, it was on these forums I believe where someone was asking how to cook an egg so who knows.

It's all occult devil magic that gives us weather predictions, but don't tell anybody I told you.

Beyond 5 days, weather forecasting is a much more gray area, per my understanding. That's when history/almanac data is intertwined with what the weather is actually doing. Which, the fucky way the climate is going now, that can be difficult.

Where I live, we've been a good 30-40 degrees (F) warmer than a typical January.

Atmospheric science is such a joke. Global warming? Lmao. Just add another cold month to the calendar to balance out the extra heat.

Meteorologists and weather forecasters use scientific equipment that actually functions and extrapolates on data.

Ghost hunters incorrectly use a variety of gizmos or broken electronics and call it evidence of ghosts.

Yeah, totally the fucking same.

Surely there is a better analogy. Even for a joke.

I mean, a major part of weather forecasting is predicting the future. You could have at least gone with psychics or Tarot readers.

Hahah okay. I'm sorry the joke you didn't understand wasn't written to your specifications. I'll try to do better next time.
