I've been wanting to get into vinyl for a while now, and since I've gotten into Metal more and found EM, I'm wondering how many of you listen to vinyl (metal or not).

I don't (I'm a CD listener). Vinyls are more expensive (same for shipping) they're way too big to keep a nice, tidy collection aaaand get worn too easily and I don't think the quality sound and novelty issue are worth the hassle.

I really like records and spent most of my teenage years listening to the records my parents gave me (NWOBHM, Classic Rock and Prog). I started getting back into it in my twenties and bought a few new records from new bands.

I think it's a really good platform to listen to music on because it encourages you to listen to the whole piece of music. When was the last time you actually sat down and actively listened to music as an activity? Nowadays the easy accessibility of music has bred an attitude where people listen to music basically all day as a sort of aural nepenthe but just let it wash over them.

We all do it! Records encourage you to do the opposite, sit down, shut the fuck up and listen to the music you've bought while pouring over the artwork and sleeve notes.

My suggestions would be:

Get a cheap, portable record player (like a Crosley or something).
Buy a record from a new band you like and sit down and listen to the bugger.

For me its nothing to do with sound quality or anything like that. It's the nature of the media that sets it aside.

I have a marble based Kenwood KD500 and Technis pre-amp along with an RG dynamic processor. I have no idea what year this stuff is from, as I inherited it from my wife's uncle who passed away. I spent a few hundred dollars on a new stylus a few years back, and the thing sounds absolutely amazing. I would highly recommend getting into it for any serious music fan that is into just sitting and listening to music (as opposed to it being on in the background while you browse the internet / your phone)

Nonsense.
If you encourage people to invest in a cheap turntable, you're more likely to bereave them of a positive listening experience. Take a complex work like Emperor's "Anthems..."; I bet it becomes nearly unlistenable on any sub-par vinyl playback device.

I bought a record player on a whim about four years ago and whew boy, did that start to empty my bank account quick. Never thought I would buy so many so albums and I've already amassed a collection of about 150. As a lot of people have said, it's a different experience having big artwork to look at and going through the ritual of queuing up the record player just makes the listening experience feel more special.

Also, remember the plural of vinyl is vinyl.

Yeah, I listen to vinyl sometimes. Bought my first player around 2003-04 I guess. Now I got some Audio-Technica player, which has served well. Got some few hundred LP's. Still it's mostly cd I listen, has been since I actively started getting into music.

Agreed !

There will always be them that want to spend thousands on cables for their listening pleasure, but there's just as much good in (as you say) going through the motions of putting on a record and actually listening to it.

I've actually started buying a lot of 'classic' BM stuff on vinyl, just so that I listen & appreciate it, rather than throw it on when I'm driving and not really pay attention.

Also - listening to old Saxon / Priest / Crue / (insert 80s band) on vinyl, old original pressings, on a cheap turntable ? It's basically time travel.

Spot on! I find Black Metal is particularly rewarding in vinyl format.

NWOBHM stuff is great on vinyl too, the perfect mix of heavy riffs and 70's style production.

I do. I bought my first turntable about 4 years ago and have amassed around 200 records in the meantime. I still listen to primarily cd's though and don't switch over to records that often. Lately though it's been because my preamp quit working and I haven't been bothered to buy a new one.

I have quite bit, both bootleg and regular.

One of the record stores near my house, had a few bootleg Iron Maiden live albums on vinyl. Decent sound quality too, in my opinion. I snatched those up, before it was too late.

Yes. I have been collecting since I was a young kid. One of my mom's friend's sons gave me all of his Kiss records when he left for college. Have mostly metal, crust punk and classic rock music. Also some experimental stuff.

I used to listen to it quite often. These days I just stick with MP3s and spin them when I have friends or family around.

My partner just got me a record player as an early birthday present so I guess I do now. Only fitting that my birthday is on Record Store Day this year.
