Incase any of my CDs should ever get disc rot, I want to back them up using my Mac.

Would the format FLAC be my best option for capturing the same sound as the CDs?

What is the best way to rip CDs onto a FLAC format using a Mac?

Thanks! :)

FLAC as the file type and MAX to rip.

Not enough info provided to recommend proper storage medium. The only certainty is avoid storing on CDs.

I don't know if it's the "best" way but I rip all of my cd's in WAV. I have the space for it and my usual media player doesn't support FLAC. In practice, these days I mostly listen to music either at work or "on the go," which means I'm using my phone, so I typically end up converting to 320 mp3's to save space. I have lossless files I've only listened to once; they are mostly just a backup at this point rather than something I regularly use. There are only a few albums I regularly listen to at home in full lossless glory.
