she caused quite a stir a few years back, with her black metal aspirations (let's not start again, folks), and yesterday she released an album of pure scandi folk that's worth a listen if you're into that kind of thing:

she had some shows lined up for this summer, no idea if they'll happen now, but very curious about her live lineup and setlists...

Her first album showed some decent ideas and I kind of liked it. It was like a pop version of Bergtatt. It wasn't great but it had potential. Her second album was just a mess.

She seems a lot more confortable doing this kind of folky sound and I'm happy for her but I'm not interested in this kind of music at all.

I also like this folk sound, she's good at it, though I wonder if dropping the black metal sound has anything to do with the reception she got from the "scene".

I would be very suprised. Regardless of what a portion of the "scene" may think of her, she has 200k+ monthly listeners on Spotify right now. More than enough people like her stuff, and the second album did better than the first.

I was just listening to this and I swung by her archive page and she did the hook on this song, in case anyone wants to hear her very out of character

I don't think so. Parts of the scene shat on Myrkur but all the mainstream outlets (as mainstream as it gets in metal) seem to have rated the albums quite high. She has also done a "metal album, non-metal album, metal album, non-metal album" type cycle.

I'm not sure why would you say this. She has released 2 metal albums and one non-metal album so far. If you're referring to Mausoleum, that's a live album of covers from one of her metal albums.

Well, both you and I refer to Mausoleum as an album so I don't see how it thwarts the process of thinking of her releases as "metal album, non-metal album, metal album, non-metal album".

Yes Mausoleum is a live album and yes it has covers on it but it still is an album and it is non-metal. And if we are to define an album based on original material or not Folkesange also includes a fair share of covers (I'm not sure if this is all covers and interpretations of older folk melodies or if she also wrote some pieces herself in that same style).

The basic point still stands - she has done non-metal before and I don't think the critique she recieved around the time of her first album made her leave black metal with Folkesange since she alreade has ventured outide of black metal (both earlier in her career but also under the Myrkur name).

Personally I really enjoyed this album. I hope she continues making music like this. Her bm stuff has some great moments, but overall her folk stuff just hits the spot for me. I'm glad she's continued making music after all the hate she's gotten.

I haven't checked out her sophomore album yet, but her debut had many highlights, particularly "Onde Born", which was an ear-worm. I found her latest pleasant enough on the first listen, but I'm concerned about its replayability. The instrumentation was quite sparse, in a way that I'm worried may not hold up well over time. It doesn't seem layered enough to elicit noticing a lot of details on later plays, and yet it's not quite hypnotically minimalistic in the way that ambient music can be. Still, I feel her career remains auspicious if she can integrate the different sides of her musicality.
