Used to be run by a metalhead, Thomas C. Gannon, who is also an associate professor of English/Ethnic studies in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This particular page has an essay which is a wonderful, self-aware overview of metal culture from the perspective of critical theory inspired by Theodor Adorno. The greatest shame about it is that it's been left unfinished (seems the last update was in 2003) and I would have just loved to see Gannon's own perspective on metal culture in the third part of the essay.

I remember this!

Of course, at the time, I knew nothing about Adorno. However, since then, I have done my best to find some value in him, but failed to do so. I have no patience for him and I believe that the man suffered from a serious case of anhedonia, exacerbated by the admittedly tragic circumstances of his life. Still, I don't see why others should be subjected to it. In general, I have had little patience for any theory that proposes that popular music is a tool of mass control. That's why I can't stand Laibach and lot of original industrial bands either. If you think the Beatles, the Stones, or fuckin' Queen are the biggest evils on the planet, well, you're not living on my planet.

This is an interesting attempt at some mental gymnastics by a person who wants to maintain his academic adherence to Adorno's theories and at the same time balance his enjoyment of the music in real life, as lived outside theoretical constructs, and it is accordingly painful and strained. A valiant attempt, but to what end?

That is not to say that this is not a great contribution to the thread, just like that Jesus is Savior page. Bookmarked in the "weirdness" folder, alongside that one, the Internet Explorer is Evil page, Time Cube and the immortal Ling and his cars.

I think there is some truth to what Adorno said about popular music, but I agree with your point, his views are very much influenced by his experiences in Weimar Germany, WWII and the collapse of working class revolutionary potential in the West, and those are bound to projected and oversimplified onto postwar USA. His theory is not something one can transpose a 100% to future rock and metal music. Reading him, you get the sense he believes all art arises from a fascist impulse, which is rather questionable to say the least. But I need to read more!

Admittedly, me too, but the incentive is pretty much at zero.

Widen Your World is a website that's been around since 1996 that focuses on early Walt Disney World facts and history. It's unique in that it's still updated by its owner but most of the website follows that 1.0 format; most of the pages are from the late 90s and periodically updated.

The entire page needs a TL;DR.

That is a lot to read. That person is a hardcore Disney fan. Is he so hardcore that he knows where on the park grounds Walt's frozen head is stored?

The first one was incredibly immersive. Don't remember playing much of the second one, though that's probably not a reflection of its quality. Guess I just got tired of the formula.

The recent discussion about Blue Oyster Cult reminded me of one of my favorite heavy metal critics/writers, Martin Popoff. Love his old school site: http://www.martinpopoff.com/

Came across this ancient Get Smart fan site that still gets regularly updated.

http://www.wouldyoubelieve.com/

I found that site on accident while reading on this similarly 1.0 site about the Capacitance Electronic Disc, a terrible home video format from the 80s where RCA put shitty quality video and audio on vinyl record discs and you had to stuff the thing into the player in order to get it to work, and it still didn't work much of the time. RCA started working on it in 1964, spent a ton of money and years trying to get the thing to work, and finally released it in 1981. It was such a flop that it ended up being a major reason for RCA's death.

I wouldn't necessarily say this next site is a 1.0 site, but its simplistic look evokes much of that feel.

http://www.wideanglecloseup.com/starwarsaudio.html

This is a page with links to bootleg audio recordings of the original Star Wars trilogy upon each of their initial releases. The author of the page is the guy who recorded the audio, and he says that his initial reason for doing such a thing was because he was slightly dissatisfied that the original 2 LP soundtrack of the first movie he bought in 1977 didn't feature every single music cue from the film. Therefore, he went to a screening of Star Wars, snuck in a cassette recorder, and bootlegged the audio once from the left side of the theatre and once from the right side. He ended up doing the same thing with The Empire Strikes Back, and thus we have two original theater audio recordings of the first two Star Wars movies.

By the way, I highly recommend this page from OriginalTrilogy dot com. It is a GIANT preservation effort of original theater presentation bootlegs of each Star Wars movie, from the original in 1977 all the way up to Solo. The effort's been going on for over a decade, and it features some extra stuff as well, such as a camrip of the original Phantom Menace trailer that was attached to Meet Joe Black in 1998, plus two different workprints of Revenge of the Sith. Some of the links are dead, but most of them are stil live.

The menu across the top is truly 1.0 era, even if more from the latter half. Text rendered as images that change to a different image with the text highlighted when you mouse over. I remember doing that when you had to put a check in the code to make it work differently for Netscape users.

I'd be lying if I said I cared for Star Wars specifically, but that entire Wide Angle / Closeup site is pretty great. Thanks!

Tons of music articles (of varying quality) on this one. The interviews are generally pretty good. The metal content is generally asinine, though.

Listening to a lot of Husker Du these days again (shout-out to Toilet ov Hell and their podcast), so I remembered this fan site, which I should have included in the first post anyway, cause I've known about it since forever:

Husker Du Database: Spartan design, but just about every piece of factual info on the band you could think of.

As a fan of Husker Du, this site was pretty cool.

Also, I don't know about you guys, but I always had a soft spot for those "Enhanced by Google" search engines on the main page.

This isn’t one you should actually waste your time on, but if you want to be entertained by cringing, there’s that “Jesus is savior” site. It’s a bunch of really old school looking pages, and it’s just someone who really Christian, claiming everything is evil, especially popular music. He has a bunch of pages claiming that there’s no such thing as Christian rock, because of the Bible’s ‘an evil tree cannot bear good fruit’ verse. I remember it coming up, in search results, years ago, looking for information, about mainstream metal and hard rock. I remember that he actually put effort, into making an argument, that Venom really was a satanic band, he made himself sound like an idiot. I’d encourage you not to waste your time with it.

Come across another - bit of context - there's a long running (slightly silly) British murder mystery programme called 'Midsomer Murders', in which the protagonists solve crime in a sort of twee-English stereotype land.

Naturally, there's a spotter site for people that walk to stalk the filimg locations -http://midsomermurders.org/locationsindex.htm - I found this while searching for a particularly nice house used in one of the episodes.

Brilliant ! Is that kind of thing subtitled / dubbed over ? Just wondering as a lot of the humour can be pretty specific, so curious if they carry that over at all. Watching Inspector Montalbano with English subs, you can see that some of the Italian references are subtly altered so that they make sense for a general anglophone audience.

Subtitled. Dubbing never caught on in Serbia and other former Yugoslav countries, except for cartoons.

The quality of the translation is generally very high. If you take something that features a lot of location-specific slang like "Only Fools and Horses", that's a real translation challenge, but I remember some ingenious translations of all those infamous Del Boy-isms. :D Even for people who have a poor grasp of English, the meaning is conveyed most of the time.

Thanks for that, never ever came across that - even has it's own wikipage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_is_Evil - looks like it just died the quiet death of old webpages though.

Uhh…you thought that was crazy? Oh no, it gets worse. You know who owns that right?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Lazar

He claims to have graduated from two of America’s most prestigious scientific schools, despite getting awful grades in science classes, and never having gone to a university, besides some basic lower division work…and no one there remembers seeing him. He claims to have worked at a laboratory that the government does nuclear research at, and there’s a VHS, where ufologists film him going there, and people do recognize him…but that’s because he was a janitor. He claims to be a “whistleblower,” who worked at Area 51(he said that his friend got fired from his job, at “Area 52,” as retaliation), and has drawings of the alien craft he said he saw. He also claims to have been inside of one, and has diagrams of the interior. Even other ufologists hate him, thinking he’s hurting their cause. If you have Netflix, there’s a fact-deficient documentary about him, from the Tom Delonge(ex-Blink 182) grifter universe.

In real life, the only action the government’s taken against him, is a federal fine, for using the postal service, to distribute illegal fireworks, and a local conviction, for doing accounting, for a brothel(the state he lives in is famous for gambling and prostitution being legal, except prostitution is only legal in middle of nowhere areas, where there are no casinos. Also, outside the two metropolitan areas, there are like, five towns, in the entire state, and the non-urban areas are mostly extreme conservative Mormons and Christians. In real life, the government does test aircraft there, because it’s so remote)

Ahahahahah  No I had no idea ! Marvellous, thanks for that !
